Does anyone have the series of images going over ZUN's influences for early Touhou characters? I'm especially interested in which of Takemoto Izumi's works got referenced.

That's a nice way to say plagiarism.

I'm interested in that as well.

Inspiration is not plagiarism

All I remember is that there was a character named Patchouli. Sakuya was literally drag and dropped in and given DIO's powers. And I think a couple fairy names were used.

You would be right if not for the fact that plagiarism is two things.
1. Using someone's material.
2. Passing it off as your own.
Team Shanghai Alice is a circle. It's not a company or an indie dev team. The goal was never to make it big, make money, or anything. It's a hobby. Especially way back when EoSD came out. The early games, including those of the PC98 games are filled with traced art, music that often sounds very similar to games that came out around that time, and in some cases characters directly lifted from other things and slightly modified. For the environment his games were releasing on? Completely fine, normal, and generally expected even. After EoSD, it's nearly completely gone. I think the only (in your words) 'plagiarism' is yukari's sprite which is traced from some other artwork that I forget the source of. Once his games started getting a following, he started worldbuilding and making proper characters/using historical influence. He was responsible enough to recognize his games would be better off being more independent very early on. For me at least, I think that's more than you can ask from someone for that situation.

tl;dr: Nope.

People keep saying this, but they're going to realize that they just didn't know the sources at the time. ZUN didn't suddenly stop being a doujin game maker and small time games didn't stop knocking off characters.

Just because you don't know the sources for the characters we get now doesn't mean they don't exist. Kaguya is based off the bamboo cutter tale, Eirin is Omoikane, Suwako and Kanako are amalgamations of a couple different gods, the tengu are tengu, the kappa are kappa. I'm not sure where you get the confidence to say such a dumb thing. Do you have any characters you know are knock offs? At least >>24986024 is obvious with the trolling.

It's not like Zun is the only one who's done things like this by any means. Almost the entire fantasy genre is a ripoff of Tolkien and Howard, and their works in turn are ripoffs of older works. All art is derivative.
