So I just started learning Japanese like 3 weeks ago. I've got kana down and started Kondansha for kanji--according to Anki I've learned 150 Kanji. I'm using Genki and am up to chapter 4 so I know a few words and can recognize conjugation overall I'm very much a beginner. I play a mobile game called Pocket Camp that has a Japanese option. I've done that but now I cant read anything I'm pretty much playing based on muscle memory which is fine but I'm wondering is this even beneficial, will I pick up things from seeing them over and over (sort of like tadoku) or is this just a waste of time?

Hey everyone, I wanted to start a discussion about the usage of flashcards, and whether or not it is worth it after a certain point.

I've been doing flashcards for almost 3 years now, and I amassed lots of hours and cards on my Anki decks. I recently started a deck with N1 words as well.

There are a bunch of problems at this stage:

there are many collisions: several words inevitably end up having the same meaning, and this makes flashcards very frustrating. I usually try to counter this by adding extra hints to the front of the card to help me guess the correct word, but this is very far from ideal.

most words at this point are really not that surprising. They are just new combinations of already known kanji, and often the meaning can be inferred even without knowing the word.

This makes me wonder whether I wouldn't be better off by, say, reading a Japanese novel 30 minutes a day instead of doing 30 minutes of flashcards. The obvious drawback is that I would not really be learning new words in this way, unless the same word frequently occurs in the novel, helping me fixing it in long term memory.

How do you deal with this? What would you recommend? Did your usage of flash cards vary depending on your level of japanese?

The fact that you're reading doesn't mean that you won't be looking words up. Isn't it logical that your Japanese ability will naturally expand as you spend more time in the language?

I finished Chuukyuu wo Manabou 56 in class (one level above Genki II) and got mostly through the core 2k, then stopped doing any formal studying and any Anki whatsoever. I just read progressively more difficult stuff. If I came across a word I didn't know I looked it up; at first I used an J-E dictionary and then later switched to a J-J one. After looking a word up I'd write it and its definition down in the margin of the page I found it. Then I forgot about it. Sometimes I remembered the word, sometimes I didn't. But I find that they stick after a few rounds.

I know that my vocabulary is improving because the first book I read in Japanese, a YA horror novel, was ~225? 250? pages and I looked up several hundred words (don't remember exactly, 2-3 per page). Recently I finished reading Murakami's Kafuka by the Shore, a ~1,000 page book, and I ended up needing to look up just over 160 words (1 word per ~6 pages).

I'm sure that could have been done more efficiently with Anki, but all I did for about two years was read stuff, and it worked just fine for me. And that improvement happened while I was living in Moscow and Taipei, focusing on Russian and Mandarin, not Japanese!

Keep practicing reading and writing Japanese kana and kanji, don't think you've learnt it, you will forget the kana and kanji if you don't continually read it and write it yourself by hand.I don't see why you're just using flashcards, duolingo is the same principle but much more advanced for this. Anki is used on here because it's what people back in the day used to use before Duolingo for Japanese existed.
