I'm new to learning Japanese, have read the FAQ and Starter's Guide and have some questions about my plan for learning Japanese.

The current resources that I have are the Genki 1 and 2 books (textbook, workbook and answer key) as well as the Anki app (Genki, hiragana and katakana decks)

My plan to learn Japanese is:

Write down all the hiragana and katakana once as a reference and then use Anki decks for it to practice them daily until I get it down

Learn the actual content (grammar + vocab) in the chapter

Listen to the audio in the chapter when required

Then do the exercises for the chapter

Then do the writing exercises for that chapter (located towards the back of the book)

The most important thing you are going to have to do is pick a good, legitimate source to learn and stick with it. You can use various sources to supplement, and in fact I suggest used various sources to learn. The point is to have a main source and stick with it.

Secondly, you mentioned Tae Kim and Genki. Both are respected sources of learning Japanese. The one thing I think Tae does a little better than Genki is that you are taught the short form of Japanese grammar rather than the polite form first. Don't worry so much about what that means right now, the point is the short form is, obviously, shorter and easier to learn. Either way, both sources are fine. If you do go the Genki route I suggest you review the material with this guy: https://youtu.be/h4wYWkNnxcM..

Third, in my opinion the best sources I have found for Japanese grammar is Cure Dolly: https://youtu.be/DJ_RKFi7GKU.. Her explanations of core concepts are the clearest I've ever heard and she is a wonderful teacher. The thing about her videos are.... Uh.... She's a little.... Off-putting? Some people don't like the style and find the augmented voice creepy. I personally don't think it's a big deal, but just know that.

The other major complaint is that her video titles are very click-baity with terms like "What Japanese textbooks don't want you to know" and such. This critique is more accurate but if she teaches the material correctly who cares? There also is some truth to those titles because she discusses how modern Japanese textbooks are too European language centered and thus do not teach the Japanese language in the way it's meant to be taught.

The best thing to do in my opinion is, while doing Genki, write down the new vocabulary as well as write in the workbook as this not only reinforces the vocab but the kana itself. We tend to remember things better after writing them down.

That said, I wouldn't worry too much about writing Kanji at this point. Doing so adds a whole other, quite difficult layer to your learning that you simply won't need for a long time. Definitely invest in Wanikani to learn the kanji though, it's quite simply the best resource I've seen for learning kanji and vocab. Just don't worry about writing them yet.

Personally I hate Anki as barebones flashcards go in and out of my brain immediately for some reason but some people swear by it. But if you're having the same problems with it, don't try to force yourself and get discouraged that you don't remember anything. I found Memrise to be better for me and has the same custom deck features.

Hello all, this is bound to be a long post, but I really need some help so please stick around.

I just received my JLPT N4 results, failed by 2 points. I am not so upset about the test specifically, but it has confirmed some things I have been thinking for a while.

I am 24 and living in Chicago, my dream has been to move to Japan since I was a about 11 years old. About 6 years ago I started seriously learning Japanese, took my first college class, even though I had already learned Hiragana and Katakana from a young age. I sailed through 2 years in college without doing much HW because it was all just so easy. I have a great memory for nouns. After getting out of school I realized that I had to start to learn how to study so I decided to start to study for the JLPT because it would be a goal every year that I could see my progress. I failed my first year N5, by 30 some points. I thought I was ready but I relied too much on class information and just didn't study enough. then I kinda got in a rut and although I studied some, I really didn't commit to Japanese for a while. I probably tried to do at least 15 minutes a day but I wasn't really working hard at it at all.

Flash forward a couple years and I had started to study again, passed the N5 and was feeling good about life. 2011 was me hitting my stride. I had finally learned how to study. I did Rosetta Stone, got the Japanese TV channel and watched as much as I could, downloaded dramas, got through the entire Basic Japanese Grammar book, tried to read children's books, got a lang-8 account and started writing journals at least once a week, started Anki, read Common Japanese Collocations, got the Tobira book and started it, picked up some manga, got a Japanese exchange student, started speaking only Japanese with my husband in public. I was pretty much AJATT. I am not going to say I did great at all these things, but I definitely tried. I think I tried everything because a lot of things didn't work too well for me. So I wasn't the best student, but I was doing Japanese at LEAST an hour a day.

So October 2011 rolls around and I decide I need to start studying for the JLPT N4. I did nothing but study for the JLPT so long, my brain actually hurt every day. I did practice tests, worked on grammar, bought a couple of listening books and studied specifically for that test for 2 straight months.

I just received my results, I failed. I only failed by 2 points, but it made me realize that I actually guessed on almost every question on the test. I could not understand the listening at all!

So here I am, I have put 6 years or more of my life into this language, I have worked my ass off, I even have definite plans to move to Japan April 2013 to join a language school with my husband for a year. We already have 1/3 of the money saved up. And I feel like maybe I am just too stupid to learn this language. I have tried so hard and I just keep failing. We just made friends with a Japanese couple and I can't understand anything they say, I am defaulting to my husband just to be able to converse with them. Plus its super hard to watch him pick up the language with ease and pass all the tests with flying colors.

So I guess I need some help. I am ready to just give up the language completely, but I have no idea what that will do to my life and my relationships (I have already told my whole family I am moving to Japan) Should I just give up? Is there anyway I could pull myself back up and continue with it when I have failed so may times before? I have poured so much blood sweat and tears into this language!! I am sorry for the long post but I really need some help! (Please don't respond with a がんばれ！or "you can do it!" that's really not what I need right now...

I am a native Croatian speaker and a huge anime fan. I have recently started developing an interest in learning different languages as both of my grand-grand fathers spoke a lot of languages and I kinda want to follow in their footsteps. So japanase has obviously intrigued me because I watch a lot of anime. Anime isn't the only reason but it was definitely a big factor in deciding which language to learn. For Anki, I average 56 minutes doing vocab and 10 minutes doing Kanji. Then, I try to do one "thing" from Genki every day. A "thing" is one of the following:
>Copying down, checking, and adding pitch accent to the new vocab for a lesson
>Reading a grammar lesson, reading more about the topic from other sources, and writing down my understanding of the topic
>Doing the practice exercises for the grammar lesson I did the day before
>Editing and copying down the useful expressions/vocabulary at the end of a Conversation/Grammar section
>Writing down and researching the Kanji introduced at the start of a new Reading/Writing section
>Doing a subsection of the reading writing section (eg. I one day, then II the next, then III, etc.)
The time this takes varies wildly depending on what it is that day. The grammar lessons in particular vary in length wildly based on how complex the subject is, how wrong Genki is, and how available/correct/understandable other sources are. Some topics take 30 minutes max, but then for 時 clauses I spent 3 days just doing research on how they worked (so I don't always manage to do one of these a day). I also try to spend 30 minutes working on my listening comprehension. This usually involves watching a vtuber without subtitles, but I consider it part of my active learning because it's something I started deliberately incorporating into my routine with the express purpose of working on my listening comprehension.
