I watched some of it when I was a beginner, but I don't think it's a good way of learning the game. It's comprehensive, for sure, but you'd be better off reading some shorter beginner guide and then playing until you "get it". You could also try the tutorial on Mahjong Soul.

well, that's quite a shitty book if the dora is not indicated.

assuming we want big points, it's best to go for chiitoi and/or menzen riichi.

(if the dora is manzu, balancing between chiitoi and honitsu is also an option)

in a real game, you could go for a honitsu if speed was important (for example in all last)

>> No.24644594

Kamicha has no souzu discards at all and they're last, so it's possible they're going for honitsu or chinitsu. (Haku is live, one of the hatsu is visible, one of the ton is visible. Something like honitsu + double ton or honitsu + haku + red dora (12000 points) is a very real possibility.)

9p is absolutely safe and I'd probably go for that if the next draw leads to tenpai (147m, 69s) or is a dangerous tile (any other souzu). If I get a 6p draw on this turn, cut the somewhat risky 9s to get to tenpai. Anything else, probably tsumogiri. Definitely would not push with 69s discard if kamicha starts dropping other souzu tiles.

What happened with the 8p discard? 67889 is usually a decent shape pre-tenpai since it accepts any of 56789p to become two complete blocks. (Unless you initially had 7889, cut the 8p, then drew a 6p later.)

>> No.24644614

>>24641541
it's a very fast and nice hand actually
you are waiting on any of 147man 69pin 69sou to get to tenpai, that's a lot of useful tiles
all you need to look out for is that the discards of your opponents lack souzu tiles, hinting towards them building souzu-heavy hands which could get pretty expensive, so you need to be careful with discarding those

let's start talking so we don't just keep bumping for no reason.

What have you done to improve your Mahjong recently?

I've mostly been just trying to up the amount of games I play. I've got a pretty good grasp on things right now, I just need to "up my accuracy" if you know what I mean. Things like comparing tile safety every turn you need to, thinking about what you're gonna do with each tsumo beforehand, counting suji, being aware of the points of everyone and what move they're likely to make, keeping an eye on how many turns are left, who is haitei, always counting the number of tiles left on your waits, etc.

It's all this boring stuff that separates a decent player from a pretty strong one (in my opinion).

>> No.24762790

>>24760633
I've been thinking of what to focus my own improvement on, and I really wanna get good at roughly estimating the contents of players' hands and the wall, beyond defensive reads of specific waits. Figuring out what might be likely to overflow from your kamicha's hand or which tiles are likely tied up beyond obvious cases like honitsu would be a great boon to strategizing your own hand development.

It's a lot, but here's a breakdown:

Copper Coins are the only currency that effect gameplay at all. Once you're able to play in the Silver Room you have to pay a small fee per game. 1st and 2nd gain coins, 3rd and 4th lose some. You can also use large amounts of them to buy gift items which increase your Bond rating with the characters.

Jade is the primary paid currency. Charge money, get Jade. This is a gacha game, so everything is done with rolls for characters, items, and animations. The app will tell you what the odds are. The cheapest way to play is to go to the Event tab and buy the Fortune Charm for $5, which grants you 300 + 1800 Jade over 30 days. Slow but very money efficient.

Faith tokens are given for every summon roll you do. 150 will buy you any character you want, 50 will buy any animation or riichi stick you want.

Wishing Stones are a currency granted if you get a duplicate character on a summon roll. They can buy Purple (the best) tier gifts and Bonding Spheres, both of which are needed to gain a special character outfit at maximum bond level.

Star Stones are a currency granted for duplicate cosmetics and animations on a summon roll. They can buy a few kinds of cosmetic things, as well as Blue tier gifts which are good for raising bond levels.

Star Dust is gained by converting gifts at a rate of Green (1), Blue (5), Purple (25). These can be used to buy a random gift bag from each tier, or a Summon Scroll for 50 that lets you do a Summon Roll. Since gifts are picked up after a certain number of games in rooms Silver and higher, you could technically use this currency to get Summon Rolls without paying anything.

No idea about Outfit Vouchers, as nothing has been in that tab since I started playing. Holiday outfits maybe?

Hope that helps.

learn about "block theory"

>> No.24939835

>>24935555
It's difficult to explain without going into more complex theories of tile efficiency, but the gist of it is that you need to be looking at the gaps in your sets that will complete them, rather than the tiles themselves.

1223m is technically complete but could expand into two sets by drawing a 1m or 3m, while a 2m would make a 123m and 2m pair (useless here, since you have three disconnected pairs already.) The 556m shape could be completed with another 5m (unlikely as there is one in West's pond, leaving only one possible remaining) or a 4m or 7m. Your pairs could all be called, though you shouldn't unless the Haku is dropped first since otherwise you have no yaku with an open hand.

So with all that crap in mind, the optimal route to win here is to drop the 2m, drop the 5m on a 4m-7m draw, call or draw the Haku, wait on whatever set remains. In reality though you're unlikely to win this hand, since South appears to be in tenpai, you're still three away from winning, and Haku being dora makes it unlikely anyone will drop it. The other two could even be part of South's wait.

>> No.24940060

>>24939835
Actually looking back at this, North dropped a Haku two turns prior. You should have called that immediately unless you didn't have the pair yet. Calling a dragon triplet with an otherwise garbage hand isn't the best play, but a triplet of dora dragons is an instant mangan with total flexibility.

Mahjong is a long and painful road of steady improvement. Good understanding of the yaku and how to build towards them is a great place to start.

I'd recommend putting particular focus of Pinfu. Despite it seeming a bit complex with its rules, it's the most common hand in the game at a higher level and will win you hands more often than you imagine. If nothing looks to be coming together by the middle row of discards, you should be thinking, "How can I finish this as Pinfu?"

this doesn't seem like good advice
>it's the most common hand in the game at a higher level
this is false, pinfu is only in ~20% of hands (http://tenhou.net/sc/prof.html))

pinfu is only relevant with a particular kind of hand shape, and those hands basically automatically end up as pinfu, without the player even thinking about it

if "nothing looks to be coming together by the middle row of discards" then I think it's bad advice to go for pinfu. if it's a hand where pinfu is realistic, then you won't think "nothing looks to be coming together by the middle row of discards"

I think the best way to absorb the yaku naturally is to play a lot + watch decent people's mahjong streams (+ learn about block theory as I've already said)

You're right that ~80% of winning hands don't end up as pinfu and trying to force pinfu in every hand is stupid, but just to nitpick, yakuhai is ~30-35% (combined across winds and dragons), tanyao and pinfu are ~20% each, and the next highest ones are honitsu, iipeikou and sanshoku at ~4% each. Pinfu isn't quite the most common yaku, but it's third place with a huge gap between that and fourth place.

Because even though you have 5 blocks for honitsu, you don't have any value honors, so it's gonna be 2 han (which is 2k pts).
It's better to go for pure efficiency since you have a 45p ryanmen and aim for riichi, while keeping your chiitoi option open. So that means you should discard 1m and you'll have 246m ryankan, 88m pair, 45p ryanmen, and the other 3 pairs.

so to put the above posts together:
- You got hit with a temporary furiten, because someone discarded a tile that could have completed your hand and you did not ron it. It will go away after your next discard
- You could not ron that tile because you have no yaku. Dora is not a yaku, they are bonus points that get added after your hand has won, so right now your hand is still worth 0 han.
- The easiest way to make that hand valid is discarding one of the fives and getting another west tile. Alternatively, discard both winds and go for tanyao.
