So seriously, good game. It was close until the South Third, but then I got a Dealer Hane Man and it ended kinda in a slaughter. But it was still fun.

Well, I try to go for edge waits. Sometimes you can't avoid closed waits but you definitely shouldn't go for dual pon, that's just stupid. Edge waits usually come true, closed waits most of the time.

If you're on a dual pon wait, you have 4 tiles you can call. Obviously, since 2 of each are already in your hand. Also if you're in a riichi, a dual pon wait will most likely ruin your potential for a pin fu.

If you're on an edge wait, normally none of the kind of tile you're waiting for is already in your hand. So you have a total of 8 tiles you can call.

Well we can argue about closed waits. There are also 4 tiles you can call. And chances are somebody might have a three of a kind in their hand.

However, dual pon waits can usually easily be transformed into edge waits, closed waits not so much. If you're say on a 5 sou, 3 pin dual pon wait... a 4 sou, 6 sou, 2 pin or 4 pin will transform it into an edge wait. Since none of them should already be in your hand you have a total of 16 diffrent kinds of tiles you can draw.

There's an obscure yaku named ryan pei kou (basically replacing the 1 in iipeikou with 2) that counts for 3 han. It's so rare that I've never ever gotten it, and I've gotten most yakuman.

An addendum is that if you get that, your hand does not count for seven pairs, since you inevitably have to make a 7 pairs hand to get it. But it's 3 han over seven pairs' 2 han.

Also iipeikou counts for melds of 3 tiles, not for allllll repeating patterns. So if you have 22 33 44 55, it only counts once, as 223344 or 334455 + pair.

You're thinking of an open wait. You wait for 4 tiles in an edge wait.

Which destroys your hand when you count on it. It may seem counterintuitive, but when there are different waits with the same number of tiles still in play, the one with bigger number of different KINDS of tiles is better.

That's precisely why it makes more sense to keep an eye in your hand than to keep x/(x+2), 12 or 89 combination.

Also, you can dual pon on honor tiles. Which are almost certain to get discarded right after they get dealt.

Maybe you're right. I tend to be a bit inward. But I still think honor tiles are simply best dealt away right in the beginning of the game. Sometimes I keep them as a pair when no other aparent pair is in my starting hand, but most of the time I just throw em out.

Also since most of them get discarded at the beginning of the game, isn't it unlikely that you're going to get in a dual pon wait on them that isn't empty?

I decided I hate shitty players. Sure, it's nice to win in the end, or to have a mangan and know they won't catch up anymore, but on the other hand it's frustrating when you still aren't winning and realize who you're behind, it's unnerving how they deal into other players' hands (especially those players that know what they're doing too - your actual opponents; it turns a battle of wits you might have with them into lottery). And in the end they run away when they're even 10000 points behind.

I ran away with that last game in points, but a lot of it was luck from a couple of big reverse dora and I made some pretty huge blunders near the end. As for players quitting or giving up when they're down, that's just plain weak. It's very possible to make a big comeback anyway, even when you're down to a few thousand points.

10000 points behind can be a little or a lot depending on whom you're up against. Many times in 7447 if I am top with about 6000-8000 ahead of someone else, he's not getting anywhere.

I was like that before, I used to play a lot and go for as many random games as possible, but now I prefer to only play when I can focus a little, especially since with IRC and Saki's popularity as well as 0000 on tenhou I can get a game any time. If you can't focus you can't do shit.

Take a look at your situation again. You are 26000 in 3rd, with the other 2 ahead of you at 31400 and 26300 in all last. You are dealer.

All you need to do to extend the match is get a minimal ron on the leader, since if no one is above 30000 the match will not end. As dealer yourself you have good chances of ending the match as top with a winning hand, and even if the points are insufficient the match will continue because of renchan. It is at critical points like these that you need to focus, and not throw away matches because of raging at past draws/discards. Even at this juncture, it's not the end of the world after the guy in last riichis. You just need 1 or 2 good draws or calls to get into tenpai and force a renchan through ryuukyoku, or win a bullshit hand through houtei ron.

Other players have no reason to deal into his hand, especially top. Because of that, if his hand is mangan+ tsumo, the game will still continue after that, since leader will be taken under 30000.

What you see in manga and anime about the heat of the game, the critical junctures where you need all of your focus to seize an opportunity when it presents itself, this was such a point.

And you blew it.

Not helping them how? They already have a big lead? They are very far behind? A cheap win can stop you from having your big hand crushing them. A cheap win can also get them just a little bit more points because the tiles they receive throughout the game are total shit.

I've had games where I didn't get any higher hands than 2000 point wins, but just the last game I played, I only got mangan and haneman hands, and ended up with +57. Super hands? No not really, hell, I don't know anything about specific hands, and I actually barely play. However they were not bad hands at all, which actually surprised me each time I RON'ed.
