I have been studying Japanese for roughly two and a half years at school (I am in year 10, aus schools) and I have recently felt like the stuff i'm learning is easy but the things I see on youtube and on the internet are just completely different to the things I know.

Granted, there is a lot of hard and complex content that can be found online, and I can understand some parts but sometimes I feel as though I haven't learnt anything. Definitely not enough to understand an idea of a conversation.

So I did my research, expanded my knowledge, learn't a fair heap of stuff but still feel as though I am getting nowhere. I then started a duolingo account (i know i know, it's not reliable) , tried listening to podcasts and I still feel like I am not making any progress.

I truly don't expect to become fluent in weeks or anything like that, I just wished I could understand things more and have conversations with people in Japanese. I am definitely not trying to rush to fluency or get really good really quick. I just feel as though I don't know what to do to get better.

Is anyone feeling the same way or has been in this position before? What can I do to get better?

Ok, so I've been studying Japanese for over two years, at least half an hour per day, missing only a few days. Normally, people would almost be fluent within that span of time, but I can't even understand N5 listening practices.

I feel like the sources I've been using were wrong. These were the ones I used :

Duolingo for Kana, but then I heard Duolingo was really bad, so I dropped it.

JapanesePod101 for basic sentences, but then I was told that was bad.

I read Genki 1, but it was information I had already seen with Duolingo.

I tried Memrise, and that didn't work.

I bought Busuu one week ago, but their courses go from super easy in the A1 stage to almost impossible from A2 and on.

So right now I'm using Anki, because apparently that works for vocab, WaniKani for Kanji, and Tae Kim's guide for Grammar. I've done this for over 2 months and I've seen no improvement whatsoever.

why do you need to frontload isolated characters with silly stories when you could frontload actual words and how to read them and what they mean? the latter is way more useful for when you are getting input. Learning japanese for fun on duolingo. Not much of a problem there, but when I actually try reading some katakana or hiragana elsewhere, things like dakuten are really difficult to differentiate. I remember seeing マイ ライブラリ; since I didn't really know what it was, I referred to charts and eventually thought it was "my raipurari" which made no sense because I thought the ブ was a プ, and it wasn't until google translate suggested マイ ライブラリ that i could see it was "my raiburari / my library" even though they looked the exact same to me!

Similarly, I've not started kanji just yet but it seems like everything is a little too detailed in too small a font to notice clearly. I just know that there'll be a point where I confuse two extremely similar looking characters together, because one had an extraneous box in the top left corner or something that I wouldn't have noticed.

I presume it does get better otherwise people wouldn't really learn it. But the question is - how? Do you just get used to it? Do you have to squint or zoom each time you read japanese script? Or do you just use context clues to guess your way through (in which case I'm fucked since context clues don't appear to me until I'm well into my studies of the language)?

After 1 year and 4 months of RTK I can basically confirm that it's "useless"
It does teach you to produce kanji from key words by means of mnemonics but that doesn't get you very far because it doesn't work the other way around. For most Kanji i can't immediately think of the meaning (keyword) when I see them except the 300 ones that are very common. For everything else I usually have to split them up in my mind into their elements and then try to recreate the mnemonic in my head to arrive at the meaning which often doesn't really work because the keyword is the spark for the mnemonic, not the visual information.

You're far better off doing lazy kanji and actually thinking of the keyword while looking at the kanji and remembering that. You will not be able to write kanji but recognizing them and their meanings when you encounter them is far more useful for a learner anyways. The only benefit I got from RTK is that I don't confuse one kanji for another anymore
