Mahjong General

===============================================================================

---------------------------------------
What exactly is Mahjong?
---------------------------------------
Mahjong is a tile-based game most similar to a cross between Gin Rummy and Poker. It was originally created in China, but the popularity spread quickly, and nearly every single area in Asia has its own variant. This pastebin is focused solely on the Japanese variation, most commonly known as "Riichi" or "Reach" Mahjong.

Contact information is down below. If there is a mistake in this guide, feel free to contact the email. The author is not always present in the Mahjong threads.

---------------------------------------
How do I play? What are the rules?
---------------------------------------
Here was some various links to the rules.

A Beginner's Guide to Riichi Mahjong:
https://mahjong.guide/a-beginners-guide-to-riichi-mahjong/
A web guide to learning Riichi Mahjong. Includes handy links and pictures as well. Generally an all around good resource. It is not fully comprehensive, though, and is essentially a very brief "how to play video games/online". Once you brush up over those, if you find your knowledge lacking, or you really really like the game, you should definitely read up on the other rulesets there.

Fast and dirty guide to playing video game Mahjong from a /v/-anon
https://pastebin.com/22TD79vN
This is an incredibly short read and should teach you just enough to be a threat to someone while playing in a video game version, such as in Yakuza. You shouldn't rely on this as there is a lot, lot more to learn, but this isn't bad for a fast method.

Riichi Mahjong Guide (Video)

Video series teaching the basics of Mahjong. The author of the videos also has more advanced videos as well, talking about things like defense.

Wikipedia:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_Mahjong
The wikipedia entry and it's sub-entries are actually very surprisingly robust on the amount of rules it covers. It is a dry and formal way to learn the game, but possible.

European Mahjong Association (EMA):
http://mahjong-europe.org/portal/
The EMA is the official tournament rules for Riichi Mahjong in the Europe area. They also tend to be the most popular ruleset to reference when people translate the game due to various factors. The rules here are more focused on tournament play, and thus will skip over various rules that you may see in other games.

World Riichi Competition (WRC):
https://worldriichi.org/
The WRC is an attempt to standardize the English-speaker rules for Riichi Mahjong in tournament settings. It is not usually as popular as EMA, but will sometimes be referenced. The rules here are more focused on tournament play, and thus will skip over various rules that you may see in other games.

Riichi Rules around the World:
http://ooyamaneko.net/mahjong/rratw/index.php
This is a chart of all of the various different Riichi leagues and their viewpoints on the many optional rule points. This is meant for more advanced players who just want a quick list of differences between their chosen variant versus other official leagues. Please note, even if you are advanced, it is still best to view the most updated rules before playing.

There are mahjong cards, but holding and considering all 13+ cards in your hand at the same time is unwieldy. There's 34 types of tiles used in Japanese mahjong which is a lot more than the 13 ranks in French playing cards.
Tiles should also last longer than even a case of playing cards.

There's also the charm of the physical item. Imagine Scrabble but with cards, for example. It wouldn't be as satisfying as digging through the bag for a piece, just like part of mahjong wouldn't be satisfying without mixing up all the tiles at the start, or lining them all up.

>> No.23810597

This so very much. A local variation of rummy is popular in my family and just holding the cards (from 11 up to 19) gets tiring in longer sessions. You don't have to deal with old people licking their fingers for a better grip every time they draw, either.

Feasible, sure, but it won't be quick. Get into silver+, play a single character making sure to work on maxing their bond and earning silver chests and bond items, then trade everything off for stardust to buy tickets. That's all you can do. Save up for a character rate up if you want someone in particular. Theoretically, 1/20 tickets on average should net you a character, but like I said, it sure won't be quick.

Because you can grind a number of games so much faster like >>23989880 said. In the flash game max speed means you can draw another tile in a second.

Any type of competitive multiplayer game is much easier if you practice first. If you could play it IRL with experienced friends then that's that's a different story (interactive feedback and community bonus), but waiting for three random strangers to discard is a waste of time if you can't handle your own tiles (not to mention the opponents').

that's just mahjong you bitch. had a game today where I played pretty much perfectly (probably not, but it was good enough for my level) but in south-3 the 4th dude who was 15k behind of me riichied and as I dropped one of my shaas (I had a shaa back call, best defense+offense combo) he ronned me.

shaa fucking tanki

riichi
sanshoku (789)
dora + aka
AND HE EVEN GOT FUCKING URA

if it were just a mangan I still would've had a chance in all last, but with haneman tsumo/mangan choku, it's pretty much over

that shit was unlucky on so many fucking levels, but it had nothing to do with me playing good or bad. that's just mahjong. in my other two games today I got 12 so all in all I've got +-0 today.

keep in mind that just because you got ryuukyoku that doesn't necessarily mean your riichi was bad. if you go dama, all the opponents can keep making their hands, and maybe someone would have gotten an expensive hand. also, it might seem that just getting an agari is the most important (which is of course true in some cases), but the points you miss out on can later become the difference between taking top or ending up second for example. so keep this in mind every time you struggle to decide between riichi and dama.

to progress from tokujou to houou you have to work on your weaknesses. if you know Japanese I suggest you subscribe to 木原浩一's ブロマガ on niconico. He posts an article a day, does game reviews for tokujou players struggling to progress and answers every single question on his BBS.

getting to houou means getting rid of bad habits and further polishing your basic skills (being able to make expensive hands, becoming the best betaori boy, etc)

also I wouldn't yet call myself a high-level player, but I'm starting to notice my mistakes and hopefully in some time I'll start making less of them.

I also watch a lot of mahjong content, maybe that helps too. it's difficult to say what would help you, as everyone is different, and everyone learns differently. I think it's safe to say that if you are in joukyuu, you are deficient in several basic skills.

Because you have discarded a tile that could complete your hand. Whether said hand would have a yaku or not is irrelevant as far as furiten is concerned. Also remember that you're never furiten for a specific tile - you're either furiten or you're not.

>also what are the combinations for 10,7,4,1 tiles?
Not sure what you're asking here. If you mean like if you've called one through four times and what kind of hand composition you need afterwards, just subtract one group per call. E.g., if you have seven tiles in your hand, you need to complete two groups and a pair. Your pair will always be in your hand.

I don't know Momo too well but Misa used to be a pro herself, so she has a good understanding of strategy and is able to use that with her co-commentators to be like "do you think x did y because of z?" which is interesting and insightful. She's also good at tracking things like how many winning tiles are left, how many draws are left, what the gyakuten requirements are, and of course hand value calculations.

That said, the main reason I'm a Misa fan is probably just because I've met her in person. She's great, speaks English too.

get good. when you have a bad habit there's nothing you can do except keep an eye out for the bad habit and think really hard every time there's a situation like that. of course, if you don't construct a solid system in your head, you're gonna have to think really hard every time the same dilemma comes up. you have to think of ways to simplify your thought process, like: is the dora a jihai, what turn is it, how many ryanmens do I have, which hand would be worth more chiitoi or a mentsute. well, just start with a few of those, and gradually pay attention to more and more things as you get better at processing info.
you have to examine your thinking and find where you were mistaken

when do I NOT riichi? like only when I could very plausibly improve my hand in terms of either waits or score?

and how the fuck do I get better in general? I know the yaku and the general rules by this point but I'm generally just doing whatever without any kind of systematic thinking at all. Where do I learn some kind of standard theory of playin good, like which yaku I should be going for given particular starting hands and what kind of playing behaviour I should expect from other players?

Basically all I'm doing is really rough probability/EV calculations and it almost feels like a single player game, but I get the feeling there should be more going on.

Read RB1 and the other strategy articles
>it almost feels like a single player game, but I get the feeling there should be more going on
At lower levels of play it basically is a single player game, because your opponents will be too unpredictable to worry about and you can easily beat them just by focusing on improving your own skills anyway.

>> No.24296245

>when do I NOT riichi?
All kinds of situations! When you're more likely to improve your value and/or wait than drawing your win tile, when your hand is expensive enough already, when you don't want to be forced to discard any dora or danger tile you might draw, when you have a yaku and are more concerned with moving the game along than getting a lot of points. Definitely didn't catch everything and none of those are iron rules. Basically there are always a heap of factors to consider but don't worry too much about catching all the nuance immediately.
>and how the fuck do I get better in general?
Play more. Read strategy resources. Review your games. Don't hesitate to post screenshots of situations where you're unsure of what you should have done.

>> No.24296350

>>24295984
To add to that other anon
When the score doesn't change much and you already have a yaku. For example if you already have a 4han 30fu hand, it's 7700 points, a riichi would just increase the score by 300 points. Even 4han 25fu is already 6400 points, so riichi'ing a 7 pairs hand with two dora is probably not worth it either.

Also keep in mind that a riichi puts opponents on alert for better or worse. Meaning they're more likely to betaori. Depending on your waits, that can also be used to your advantage by riichi'ing or not.

>> No.24296454

>>24295984

Step 1: Learn a few easy ones that you choose from when building (tanyao, yakuhai, toitoi, riichi)
Step 2: Whenever you came across something that looks kinda neat, try to find it on your sheet. For example (half) flush, straight through, same sequence twice, seven pairs, same sequence in all three colours

That way, you steadily build on something you have and after a few dozen games you have a good grasp. For beginners, it's enough to just get one yaku right since the computer handles the rest.
And then, when you have a good grasp on the game, you can start learning about glorious pinfu.

Just to illustrate look at this. Green are yaku you can't build towards, that are just luck. Orange are upgrades from other yaku that just award more points and black are pretty rare. San ankou is oftentimes also just toitoi, but I doubt a newbie will use san ankou without toitoi as the winning yaku.

You only really need to learn a handful of yaku to win hands, the rest is just for optimization.
