I've almost exhausted all my backstages in A3. I only roll on Masumi and Misumi banners and even then at most once or twice, after this I'll have to wait two weeks for new events to satiate me. I don't regret going through the main story as quickly as I did, but it can't be helped that I just want to see more of my boys (the shiptease usually present in backstage stories even for the younger of the boys is nice as well)

My main problem is the romance part of the stories often feels shoehorned in or otherwise tacked on. In a lot of cases, it makes more sense for the game to have one "true/good" route and the rest all be bad ends. The strangeness of having a bunch of boys and routes all trying to compete as equally good outcomes leads to some seriously disjointed and downright awful storytelling.

I'd like more VNs that limited the number of boys and routes and defined their splits earlier so the romance has room to naturally develop. Quality over quantity I suppose.

Individual route for maybe 70%, with room for good and bad endings

Downside to this would be the short time to get on a boy's route- there would either be too many or too few choices in the hands of most developers.

I play BL, not Otome. So I am slowly learning JP to play the good ones that aren't translated yet. But of the ones I have played, and thinking about what I'd like to see in a VN, that's something that really stuck out to me.

I love plot-focused stories more than anything. I have no problems leaving the romance for the very end. It's just when games go hard on trying to make every romance feel "good" and there are a zoo's worth of boys to choose from that the storytelling falls apart. Some routes should just end bad no matter what instead of trying to twist the characters and the scenario into pretzels to make it work.

Personally, true routes for me tend to run into the problem where the writer realizes "Oh shit, guess it's time to capitalize on all the plot points I dropped before. Better let the characters fall in love super early and then we can spend the rest of the route on PLOT!"

Mystic messenger had that issue. A good chunk of the routes had the affection from the boys feel sudden, but Seven had it worst because they made Yoosung suddenly start insisting Seven must like you rather than have Seven actually grow close to you. And then Mint eye shenanigans takes over the rest of the route and the secret endings.

I think Ukyo is one of the few instances where the "true route" didn't feel tacked on cause basically all the boys in amnesia had been dating the heroine prior to the game and his love is a pretty big part of the game's truth anyhow.

Pretty much this. Hypmic was going incredibly strong, they kept releasing a lot of new stuff constantly and people even got the new divisions and all.
People were really damn hyped for the game from what I remember but as soon as more screenshots of it kept releasing people were starting to realize it was just gonna be a shitty cashgrab game. The game releases and it was exactly as shitty as people thought and the screenshot ban was so laughably stupid it just threw people off.
I don't think hypmic ever recovered from that stuff. I personally stopped caring as soon as the game was announced and never caught up with anything else.

It's not an amazing game, it's noticably been extended from a much shorter original version so there really isn't much of a plot except for vague mysterious stuff to foreshadow the true route(s, there's technically two and nope the characters never piece the whole truth together), but the character interactions are fun and I didn't get tired of watching Alicia bully her boys in offbrand hogwarts too easily. The friendship route with the girl character is a total waste of time though.

Also there's an onii-chan sub character from it's (semi-)sequels added in to the remake who didn't get a real romantic route but really deserves one. He's suffered enough.

Otome translations are mostly official these days, but there are quite a few, or at least far more than there were when I got into VNs, where it was like, that one translated volume of Starry Sky, Love Revo, and the Tokimemo games. So I don't really think it's right to say they ever died. There was never a big push to fan translate otome games in the first place.

I think the reason no one has translated Taishou Mebiusline is because it's not an N+C game and those are the only BL games that anyone seems to notice the existence of. Yeah, I think it was really a miss on the writers' part. If it was shorter it'd be a lot more tolerable. At least they changed things up a bit, though it feels rather inconsistent sometimes. None of the girl-oriented variants have a lot of dialog (well, maybe Hetalia's). tohloveKH has a lot of content in terms of having a strategy game and battles and such, some daily interactions (it's more like a dating sim perhaps), the guys don't start as your slaves, and you can have huge orgies with up to 8 characters I think? though you're going to run out of time and/or stamina in those (but 4P or 5P is very doable.)
It kind of suffers though because it's a conversion from a touhou variant and it never really added much tourabu stuff, and only a few characters got custom dialog (if you like kogitsune you're in luck)

Actually scratch that, the funniest was when Kazuki was fully in his goth edgelord "I am a demon, I am the night!" phase and Yuuya, who's an even bigger edgelord, puts him down. "Don't act like hot shit just because you shot a squirrel"

I'm still midway through but every time Mimasaka shows up it's pretty hilarious. Deciding to make him a pathetic and barely functioning alcoholic was kind of bizzare given how he is on the other routes but it works. He basically ends up being the comic relief.

The way the oni works also seems totally different to the other routes. It feels kinda like each writer was given the premise and just told to go with it and make shit up as they went along. This one definitely makes the most of it though, it's legitimately entertaining.
