23410040 No.23410040 [Reply] [Original]

So a decade after that making those Touhou maps in Team Fortress 2 I've acquired a VR headset and decided I'd like to spend my quarantine doing it all over again for Source 2. More specifically I'm aiming to create a "realistic" SteamVR Home environment featuring the Hakurei Shrine.
I've got over a dozen official manga at home but they generally only feature the shrine from the outside if at all, so I'm really lacking in visual materials to work with, so if you've got any pics of Reimu spending time doing stuff inside the shrine/around the shrine that'd be greatly appreciated.
I'm also looking to lists of furniture that'd be typically found in there.

TL;DR: post pictures of the Hakurei Shrine or scenery of Gensokyo featuring the shrine.

hard mode: pics showing inside the shrine that aren't completely devoid of furniture (a lone circular table isn't gonna cut it)
lunatic mode: the above but from canon materials

so as I understand it so far, there are actually 3 rooms inside the shrine.
* The "earth floor" (pic related)
* The main living area which is usually empty save for a table, some pillows, or sometimes a futon. There's also a small altar at the top of one of its walls
* The inner sanctum, that's kind of a small storage room where lots of stuff are piled up, there's the yin yang orb in there as well

10 years ago I made pic related for TF2.
Now I'd like to do something similar to the VRChat map from >>23423953 for SteamVR Home (and maybe VRChat as well, or a custom HL:A map)

The goal being to have the shrine fully explorable while having as many references to canon material as I can.

The issue is that even in canon manga the shrine's layout varries a lot, so I have to fill in the blanks a bit.

There are a few things that are consistent though throughout the works, namely, the shrine is probably composed of a single building + a warehouse.

I'll sum up my findings in each works bellow.

>Did any of the chapters of WaHH/FS where Reimu is briefly successful show worshippers inside a shrine building?
nope, it looks indeed like the shrine is one big honden that also doubles as the miko's lodging quarters.

I'll start my analysis with the Fairies mangas (EaLND, SaBND, OSP, VFiS)

As we can see here the shrine is the only visible building (at least that's above tree level)

It's perfectly square, although we can notice some rooms separations on the right (south) side.

Thanks to those pics, we get both the shrine and the fairies' tree in the same shot. The tree being right on top of Gensokyo's boundaries, we can deduce that the warehouse that's located behind the shrine cannot be further than that.

Also we can extrapolate the location of the onsen near the shrine and rough location of the Forest of Magic/Marisa's house from that drawing on the right.

Although sometimes the same work can contradict itself. For instance the two images here seem to show the exact same side of the shrine, despite looking relatively different. This is where I have to assume that the author took some artistic liberties, or that there was a second building all along, but the later wouldn't really make sense in the context of the rest of the manga.

So here's my interpretation of the shrine's structure in the Fairies mangas. That's right, that's a sound argument for them to be two different buildings.

I think it's kind of amazing that despite how central and recurrent the shrine is in any piece of Touhou Media, its design and number of buildings just doesn't have any consistency.

In hopeless masquerade there is no "wooden catwalk" going around it either, only around where the donation box is.

Also the "second building" is never seen in full view, or in the same shot as the shrine which adds to the confusion that they might be one and the same (which they appear to be in some instances of some mangas/fanarts).

Things like this animation also reinforce the idea that there is only one building https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iy_084Qgr5c

On the other hand, Forbidden Scrollery seems to take a more realistic approach, as IRL shrines have multiple buildings, and the style is overall grittier.

I might go with the single building on my map for two reasons:
1. Less work, less space to polish.
2. Not enough references in Touhou media of what the second building would have inside, I feel that it'd be overall pretty boring to be in.

The manual of Touhou 6 explicitely says "In the very center of it all [the misty lake] is an island, rejected by mankind simply because they could not live there. On that island is a mansion; one of few windows."

Not sure why it began to appear more and more on its coast.

shinmyoumaru's house is planned. clownpiece references as well. Is the doll a reference to something specifically?

I don't think Kokoro's stage would be still up past the festival.

Seasonal and day/night variants are planned (I did both at once with the TF2 Hakurei shrine, as the winter version is night time)

>Is it possible to create a seamless one-way looping hallway in 3D, and apply that to one of the rear paths away from the shrine?

Probably. Increasing the fog when the player gets closer to the border (past the Fairy's tree) would make it duplicate a small area and teleport the player back every time they move too far without them even noticing. I used a similar trick for the TF2 SDM map for when players come inside, while having the mansion be much bigger from the inside than from the outside. That's not thinking with boundaries. The shine itself, for instance, was said to exist on both sides of the boundary and be a point of entry/exit. It's probably better to think of the general area around the shrine as making up part of the boundary than the boundary as some circle closing Gensokyo off.

I feel like there's some deep meaning to Kourindou's location looking the same as always. Maybe because Rinnosuke as a character is very...consistent? If that's the right word.
That's his whole thing, he's lived for quite a while and pretty much does the same thing everyday, but he's okay with that. Unchanging.
Though it's probably just because artists just use the same reference for Kourindou over and over versus picking out random shrine designs and calling it the Hakurei Shrine.

Yep, I already read all of them on the wiki, shame the last one doesn't have visible illustrations. It's good to know that the shrine is at the East of gensokyo, since then it probably faces west, which will help when placing the sun in the map at various times of day.

it's a non-euclidian "boundary of sense" in-universe. But we have to make do with what a game engine lets us display.

>>23436320
That's probably it, though in the pic I posted >>23434762 the tall part of the building on the left wasn't visible on the original Perfect Memento pic, and looks eerily similar to the warehouse behind the Hakurei Shrine (which somehow has the exact same look in both the Fairies mangas and WaHH) (see >>23423090)
Is that some standard look that all warehouses should have in Gensokyo? I want the deep lore.

So this is roughly the area that the map would encompass, not counting the skybox.
For the first versions I'll focus on the shrine itself.

The next step now is measuring actual lengths and drawing stuff to scale. So that I can convert it into the hammer units used by Source.
Scale is way more important in VR for it to be believable.

it's possible that ZUN allowed Aya to have lots of freedom in designing the shrine?
Also this: have you seen IaMP's and SWR's title screens? It has a small elevated warehouse really close to the shrine itself, which is also visible in TouhouCraft, and the Sando leading the the main shrine is made of 8 blocks of stone in width with smaller stone trimmings. Don't forget the position of the stone lanterns, which is located within the area made of stone blocks.

well of course, the TF2 hakurei shrine was partly base on that design (as well as SSiB's and the warehouse was based on A Summer Day's Dream which had it locate in the same spot as IaMP, but larger)

HM features a more recent version of the shrine by the same company. I'm not as much of a fan of its design as the fairy's.

OP here, it looks just the same in mine.
Also since there's no "official" goshintai at the Hakurei Shrine I don't think I'll have to bother with this display. Though Star Sapphire found the Yin Yang orb inside the Honden which implies that it might actually be the shrine's goshintai, and reinforce the fact that the Hakurei God is a god of youkai extermination.
And since people revere gods that they fear, it suddenly make sense that youkai would frequently visit the shrine and respect it. Though its "poor" location also accounts for the low human visits count. Maybe Yukari encourages youkai to scare human villagers on the path to the Hakurei Shrine to prevent it from gathering too much faith and break the balance of Gensokyo.

I mean, if you look at how fucking powerful Reimu is with how little faith her shrine is collecting, a prospering Hakurei Shrine would be the doom of the youkai.

Did some more research, those wooden storm shutters are actually called "amado", while the paper doors are called "shouji".
Also the wooden porch that goes around the shrine is called an "engawa"

The amado are stored in those kind of boxes that I had seen in some of the manga chapters.

Do you have a source for that layout? Because generally tatami mats are 2:1 and all the same size, maybe with some 1:1 mats to fill gaps. To the point where they're used as a unit of floor area (e.g. a real-estate agent will mention a "six-tatami room").
