Also, they were using supernatural means to achieve the power source for this whole process, and would have certainly positioned themselves as being the spiritual intermediary between this inexplicable source of power and humanity.

Basically a power company but instead of money (or in addition to money) the people provide faith. The industrial revolution is just to get them hooked.
