I am losing my drive to learn
A year ago i was unemployed so i could spend entire days watching anime,. reading grammar and light novels plus anki reps.
At the beginning just getting to know a new expression or grammar structure was mind blowing i even signed up for this year's JLPT.
Recently i found a really demanding job with great pay, Making it normal for my workdays to be around 10-12 hs.
I haven't touched anki in like a month, cannot really afford 1 hour of my free time to be searching words on a dictionary to read a couple pages of light novels. Sand progress isn't really showing anymore

Is there a name for the rule where え syllables turn into their あ equivalent in kunyomi compounds? Like 雨宿り, 風上, 金網, etc.
Or at least is there a rule of thumb for when it happens, because it's not constant and it's driving me nuts.

I've been through the guide reading about the long vowel sounds and it says that the vowel sounds of / i / e / are extended by い but when i'm going to watch the Tae Kim vid, he says the same shit but that nigga pronounces えい as /ei/ instead of an /ee/, けい as /kei/ instead of /kee/ and せい as /sei/ instead of /see/ which is fucking weird because at the end of his video lesson, he pronounces がくせい as "gakusee" and せんせい as "sensee" so my question is: Why does he pronounce えい as /sei/ but when he's going to say がくせい he pronounces it correctly which is "gakusee"?

Khatz is far from "native-level" in the blue shirt video. He makes multiple grammar mistakes ("化粧しても改善しないよ" at 6:20), uses unnatural collocations (“心を傷つかれただけ” at 1:06), thinks in English and translates directly into unnatural Japanese ("ボキャブラリーテスト、語彙試験" at 4:29), and overall lacks consistency in his speaking style to a degree that I have never seen in a native speaker. And then, of course, there are the unnatural pitch accent mistakes every single sentence.

The fact that you think that Khatz in the blue shirt video is "perfect besides pronunciation" shows the limits of your Japanese perception.

Japanese people tell me that I sound "100% native" all the time. It's just their way of being polite. It's just the next level of saying "日本語上手" to a foreigner who can't say anything other than a self-introduction. The fact that my Japanese friend said that he thought Khatz sounded Japanese doesn't mean anything; people say the same thing about my Japanese all the time even though it's not true. In recent years I've shown Japanese friends the blue shirt video and gotten told that overall they thought my Japanese sounded more native.

Don't get me wrong, Khatz is great at Japanese in that video, especially for having only studied for 4 years (although there are some good reasons to doubt that he fudged some of the numbers in his own story). But, he's far from native. I was at a similar level when I was 4 years in as well.

Khatz posted a video of him speaking Japanese on Patreon a few weeks ago, and he's still making basic pronunciation mistakes. So arguing that I'm inferior to Khatz because I "still have an accent after 10 years" doesn't make much sense. The real difference between me and Khatz is that I'm realistic. I've literally never seen a single gaijin who has actually reached native-level, including Khatz. So, I have no reason to tell people that it's possible.

The idea that you can get to a "near native-level" in 2 years is completely ridiculous. It's a big fat lie that Khatz made up as a marketing gimmick. I can guarantee you that after 2 years, he was significantly worse than he was in the blue shirt video. And again, he's not even close to native in the blue shirt video.

I'm writing this because the sort of misinformation you're spreading can be extremely harmful. He gave me unrealistic expectations which took me years to recover from.

First all of, I just want to point out that “better than native” is extremely misleading. Mandarin is spoken with many different accents around China. “Putonghua” is the “officially” correct version of Mandarin that is mandated by the government and spoken by TV broadcasters. But no one really speaks true Putonghua as a native language. It’s arbitrary to say that “closer to Putonghua” is “better”, as Chinese people around China generally aren’t making any active effect to sound more “standard”; they just talk how they talk. I’ve been aware of ideas like this and other similar variations for a few years. I think they might have a lot of potential, but I also don’t think it’s some kind of silver bullet. You can reach a “7-8 out of 10” accent just from doing MIA and putting zero effort into your accent. I would say that most traditional AJATTers (Khatzumoto, me, Patrick, Nick), have around an 8 or 9 level accent (not taking pitch accent into account), and none of us did any intentional accent work besides shadowing every now and again.

Another thing I will say is that this sort of exercise will not help you to acquire pitch accent. Even if you could repeat back the 30 sentences you memorized 100% perfectly, that won’t transfer over to general pitch accent accuracy. High-level Japanese speakers who mess up pitch accent never pronounce things with pitch-patterns that don’t exist; they just often pronounce words with the wrong pattern. The hard part is not “being able to pronounce the pattern”, but “knowing what pattern is correct in what situation”. This ability to say words with the correct pattern is something that you have to train on a word-by-word basis. It’s not like vowels and consonants, where learning to pronounce it perfect in one situation means you can pronounce it perfect in any situation.

When it comes to going from an “8” or “9” to a “10”, I think you’re going to have to put in a lot of hard work, but that work can come in different forms. This is one form. I have also heard of people listening to one 10 minute clip in the language thousands of times. I’m also curious how much more effective these techniques are than traditional shadowing.

I would like to explore these ideas more in the future, but these are all the thoughts I have for now.
