I feel like a VN like Umineko, in which a sprite change happens every 20 minutes or so if even that, doesn't particularly benefit from "wasting" three quarters of the screen on something that's mostly stationary. The way NVL text "disappears" just for a couple frames on expression changes gives them way more weight too, in my opinion, compared to ADV just displaying them as they come, making subtler shifts hard to even spot if you're focusing on reading in any given moment.

With NVL text, your gaze is focused on the entire screen, so you notice when the text disappears for a second and a sprite changes its expression. With ADV, you are focused on the bottom of the screen and may not even notice a change sometimes. It also makes the prose quite ugly and cuts it up in random pieces.

These desperation walls of text are beautiful. And Ryuukishi's prose INTENTIONALLY takes advantage of NVL to look more elegant. The way text is displayed in particular. Ever notice how Ryuukishi sometimes switches to a new page even when there's still a lot of space left in the current page? It's because he's writing each page with the intention of having an aesthetically pleasing text display that emphasizes his prose. Hell, his so called "repetition" isn't really his fault half the time, but rather the result of some idiot using ADV mode to turn what was supposed to adorn his prose and make the page look nicer, into just a pointless repetition. It hurts EP7 a lot.

I've heard people say that the original and intended NVL mode makes no sense in a novel where the sprites play an important role. They fail to notice how NVL makes the sprites more noticeable and gives them more weight, as I explained.

I just finished forest, and there are more than a few similarities to umineko. While I love umineko for being a love letter to the mystery genre, and think it's conceptually sound, I always felt ryukishi bungled some of the execution. I always enjoying talking more about ryukishi works than reading them.

Forest, in my opinion, works better as a love letter to it's genre (Being fairy tales/fantasy) has more naturally integrated metefiction elements, and has a better focus on it's love story. I'd recommend it to any fan of umineko.

The mystery is more about what the meta plot represents rather than straight up murder mystery, but lack of murder mystery is mainly where they differ.
As they are both ultimately about a meta battle between a man and a woman who claims to be a witch involving lewd lolis taking place in a fantasy meta world that reflects reality. With meta characters that reflect real people in the real world.
I'd say if you at least like the meta surrealist aspects of umineko, and cute lolis it's worth a read.

I think the price put off lots of people, you can buy the whole Higurashi bundle during sales and it is still cheaper than Ciconia. Same goes for Umineko where you can get both Arcs for 15-20$ during sales.
