for Mokou, those charms make sure that she does not accidentally light her pants on fire.

Mokou's a master of charms, easily rivaling Reimu or even surpassing her (the latter, actually, since she's extra and Reimu is Stage 4). She had over a thousand years of practice, after all.

Suika's charms are just proof that she is Reimu's slave/shrine god, as seen in the Touhou anime.

Mokou is awesome enough to have more than one ability. Immortality + Phoenix Fire Mastery + Charm Mastery. You should play the game. She uses charms for all her normal attacks and fire/phoenix for her Spell Cards.

I've only read this once and from a second hand source, so it may not be correct.
Apparently there's an obscure Japanese mythical creature called a shinniku, similar in function to Särimmer from Norse mythology. Even if a part of it is eaten, that part is not consumed.
Mokou is obviously not a mythical boar, but in the context of food she works the same way.

Hair is debatable; they could be charms - hair is pretty much dead cells, so likely doesn't have the fire immunity her body would have - or just plain ribbons.

It's a more convincing portrayal than Superman's suit not being damaged when bad guys shoot bullets at his chest.

Suika's gourd is enchanted. Enchantments usually have some emblem showing themself -usually a talisman or a rune of some sort. That's a bit redundant, though.

Of course, Touhou as we know it is just a rendition of a world where there are no little girls, just souls floating in a void. The hourai elixir makes your soul indestructible.

The human mind cannot directly comprehend this world, so it creates it's own rendition of what information it receives, likening these extradimensional entities to familiar things. Like little girls. Fighting with bullets.

Touhous are illusionary - they are really just representations of greater spiritual entities. The only humans that can represent themselves there are those with some measure of spiritual power, such as a magician or priest, usually after death. Which means that Patchouli and Alice were once magicians in the outside world(OUR world) that died and managed to gain a foothold in this other world. Marisa is a magician(there's quite a few around(see Wicca)) that has yet to die. If or not she wants to gain some semi-permanent hold in this world has yet to be decided.

Get the idea yet? You can go to Gensokyo if you develop spiritual power and die.
