The only real complaint I have is that "da" is not actually a copula in the strictest sense. It's a contraction of "de aru". Similarly "na" is not a modifier. It's a contraction of "ni aru". "aru" is the verb which is the closest you get to a copula in Japanese - it means "it exists" for non-animate noun-phrases.

So if you say "sakana da", it does mean "It is fish", but so does just "sakana". The copula is implied. The "da" is completely optional and is actually only added for emphasis -- the literal translation is kind of like "That it is fish exists". In literary Japanese you would say "sakana de aru", "de" being the particle that links a verb the the means with which the verb is executed. For example "basu de iku" means "will go by bus" -- bus is the means by which we will go. In "sakana de aru" or "sakana da" we are basically saying that "fish" is the means of its existence.

The "na" modifier is also interesting. It is really "ni aru" where "ni" is essentially the "direction" in which something exists. "Something like a fish" would be "sakana no you". If you want to say "It is a fragrance something like a fish" you could say "sakana no you na kaori". Although I'm not aware of any modern Japanese that would express it like this, this is equivalent to "sakana no you ni aru kaori" -- "It is a fragrance that exists in the direction like a fish". Hopefully you can understand.

The interesting part of this is that adding "ni aru" to the end of a noun phrase just turns it into a verb phrase. And the even more interesting bit is that the only thing that can modify a noun phrase is a verb phrase.

But, you may have heard of "i-adjectives" -- these are adjectives that end in i. In actuality, these are not adjectives! They are verb phrases! So the word "cute" is "kawaii". However, the actual word is "kawai" and the inflection is "i". That's why when you want to say "not cute" it becomes "kawaiku nai" -- the "i" turns into "ku" because you are inflecting a verb.

This in turn is why you modify nouns directly with "i-adjectives". "kawai sakana", or "cute fish". Other adjectives are actually noun phrases in Japanese. "yumei na sakana" or "famous fish". This is, again, exactly the same as "yumei ni aru sakana" -- "The fish exists in the direction of fame".

Finished アカメが斬る
Terrible. I had not one powerful reaction watching this entire show. All of it was predictable and boring. The cast was likable but the fact that they get collectively killed off for no reason just makes me think what the writers were smoking, especially killing off all the girls where it almost became formulaic. I refer back to this post which I made when her 'death flag' was raised >>22723853 and of course she died, again causing no reaction in me, merely making me wonder what kind whack job wrote this piece of shit. i remember i used to believe this for many years up until i realized i'd never actually tried it and thus had no evidence i was capable of doing it at all, but also since i noticed i didn't even like having conversations with the kind of girls who were around me, that i would probably never enjoy having a girlfriend, and being won over by cuteness in anime, i just decided to reject 3d in favour of 2d.

core2k is bad because it teaches you all the words wrong. the meanings are wrong, the kanji are wong, the readings are wrong! and the beginning of learning a language is the most important part, as that's when you'll experience the fastest and most permanent gains. so when you start with core2k you basically ruin yourself with things you can't unlearn.

but they've learned enough to do a lot with the language and that means they learned and are still learning japanese

its so fuckin stupid how some of you put it on this mega high pedastal like "you only know japanese if you can sound as perfectly as a native, understand everything you read 100% with no dictionary and never make a mistake in your life" like shut the fuck up bro

Really I mostly watch anime for entertainment, now you can make something deep and philosophical that will truly make the viewer think and that will be enjoyable as well but you can also make something you will walk out of having no clue what the fuck happened (Mawaru Penguindrum is an example of this) and it as a result not being really great show.

That said I'm open to my mind being changed. So far however (16 episodes in) Evangelion hasn't really given me much that made me think it's 10/10 like so many people think but it's obviously building up to something so I'll finish watching it.

>> No.22727940

>>22727806
I haven't finished the show yet so I can't comment on the final part yet but I wonder if you aren't overly presumptuous of who browses 4chan.
Personally I don't like realistic characters if their realistic characteristics make me shake my head in disappointment. I consider myself a forward thinking and optimistic individual. I try to tackle new things and challenge myself with endeavours such as learning a language like Japanese or trying to learn programming while also attending university, I am health conscious and try to live the best life I am capable of making an effort to self improve in areas I lack (which is still many). I often think about my person, the character I am but also the world around me, the greater good and how it all relates to me.
I have sympathy for people who are overwhelmed by personal struggles, who fall into nihilism and are slaves to the circumstances of their lives possibly even growing to resent the world. But ultimately I hope everyone finds it within themselves to grow due to that struggle and aim to achieve something meaningful with their lives. I can't relate to someone constantly wallowing in self-pity, thinking only of themselves and someone who never finds the strength to break out of their misery but simply gives up or someone who has to be pushed and helped up by other people constantly.

don't you think it makes sense for a beginner to prioritize the most frequent words though? like only mine from the most frequent 5k for awhile, then only mine from the most frequent 10k, then 20k, etc.?

what's a common and easy word for you might not be for someone who doesn't know japanese and that person might be better off prioritizing other words.

it might not be a common word but if you have some memorable context attached to it then just a little extra exposure will make it stick
the more words you know the easier the rest of the words become
but if you overthink what word to learn at what time then you might waste time trying to force words that arent going to stick yet

why would there be an issue? isolated vocab cards are pretty pointless. i've been using the 2k core deck since the beginning and i'm only still using it because of sunk cost. it also has vocab on front and sentence with audio on the back. way less effective than just putting i+1 sentence with your vocab on the front.

what exactly is the point of anime cards then?
if you don't put sentence on front then it seems as though that any advantage that type of card could give you just vanishes

even without doing any anime cards shit youll do much better mining words that youve seen in memorable ways than if you just open a premade deck full of shit youve never seen before
sometimes i wouldnt see a word for a while after making the card and there would be no context associated with it left and itd become harder
anime cards might help with that by reminding you of one

>> No.22729388

the absolute best way is to premine your content, i bet its going to be the next matt video, but 'pre-mining' is where you mine the vocab and do anki reps of cards of a show you intent to watch later, then when you actually experience the words after reping them you get instant transmission like goku

Well here is the sub retimer I wrote. It only runs in Linux so if you're on Windows install the Windows Subsystem for Linux.

Simply drop the two files in your folder with your mkvs and your shitty kitsunekko .srt files and run it. On Linux run rs.sh and on Windows double click the retime_subs shortcut.
