It's probably incredibly silly, but even though they can only speak pre-recorded lines, the game generates a feeling of comraderie with the girls that comes from watching them follow your formation and try their best.

If a ship doesn't do enough damage to beat enemy armor, they do something like 10% of whatever their current hp is (forgot the exact values) so it will just get lower and lower until it can only do a 0 damage "miss" instead.
That's how you get shit like Akitsushima doing 99 damage against the boss at daytime and 3 damage scratch hits from Kitakami at night.
