>a) they don't want to buy/install them
if you have that little interest in a game, that spending a few minutes on downloading and installing it is just too much effort it begs the question why you'd be interested in watching somebody play it for tens of hours
>b) they don't want to spend time trying to get good at them
unless you are playing competitively this is not a valid point, games these days are easy and tailored for retards also providing difficulty options
and that's not even valid for visual novel games

really I think people watching these just try to trick themselves into thinking they are friends with the guy talking over the game, just delusional thinking and everything else is just bad attempts at trying to rationalize it

I think you should keep consuming with Japanese subs and (anime) mine everything you don't know until you have an excellent grasp of everything popping up in things you are watching
then you will find switching to watching things without subtitles is possible without problems as you actually acquired the language
if you listen to 'you need to train listening skill dude' he will turn off subtitles and try to improve this skill simply bombarding himself with a bunch of shit he has no chance of understanding and not looking things up leading to less efficient acquiring and more frustration

however I still think anime cards are best for beginners especially if you can't read faster than the audio is spoken

the story is definitely going somewhere. kurapika, ging, hisoka, the troupe, and some other characters are the focus now. i just meant that gon may never return as a main character.

which sucks because during the chimera ant arc togashi foreshadows an encounter between gyro and gon. togashi was basically setting up for some future arc. but given his writing style he may just abandon this idea.

there are some pointless things because togashi likes to set up a lot of characters/pieces and then try to follow them to their logical ends based on choices we would expect them to make. and sometimes their logical ends are boring and he can't do much with them and just drops them. cheetu and leol are my go-to examples for that. but sometimes they lead to brilliant moments. as for it not being worth it well we just disagree. i will never again encounter an anime with as many awesome moments as what i described. and that is why anime sucks dick to me and i quit japanese months ago. also i left out a lot of action bits i liked a hell of a lot more than anything in dbz because hxh's powers are more interesting to me.

me (and i suppose lots of other depressed people) gone through this phase long ago
when you are middle into your depression talking helps and you feel less lonely and gain a little hope

but after years pass your online friends dont do it anymore for you, you lose all your emotions (even bad ones) and the only things that makes you live more is dopamine from music, porn and videogames. at this point you sustain your mind not to erase itself completely by consuming media and chatting with people emotionlessly

you seem to have some confusions about how Japanese as a whole works so try to read more on that before pushing forward. kanji have different readings, the same character reads differently when used in different words (like your example 一being いち when alone but ひと in 一つ). this makes learning kanji a huge chore since you have to learn it through words to see which reading is used when.

Do you mean in Anki? I have a tip for that on the anime cards site. Looking at kana-only words devoid of any context and remembering the precise meaning can be challenging so I put a context snipped below the word which I use as a hint if needed. It's quite easy remembering the meaning through the context and usually in future context there are no more comprehension problems.

I guess in Anki, yeah. I used to do CoreWhateverK, and I found that I could see the sentence and it'd help me remember 'via content' what the word was, but then in the wild I'd not have a clue. Somehow I was remembering the sentence rather than the word or something. You're saying you haven't had this issue with kana-only words, then? I've been mining cards from VNs, and for whatever reason, with kana-only words, my mind has been going to the "So-and-so situation with this character from whatever" to understand what it means, even when I see it in isolation, so perhaps this is an exception?

>> No.22651455

>>22651438
if you remember a context it was used in when you see it in isolation it doesnt sound like you have a real problem

>> No.22651457

How do your core cards look? If you put the sentence on the front for all cards then you will have reduced the effectiveness of it.
And how do your mining cards look? If you are making shitty mining cards they may very well be even more terrible than core. Good mining cards on the other hand are the best thing you could do.

Yeah I don't have this issue but listen for a long time Japanese and Anki is just something you kind of struggle with but with time everything falls into place and remembering new things become easier and easier so I wouldn't worry too much about it. That is provided you are making good cards which are conductive to learning efficiently because I know people who make terrible cards and struggle with Anki because of it.

Sounds like you are doing sentence cards btw and I think full sentence cards is very inefficient both in terms of what you gain from every card you review and also considering the time you spend on each card.

>> No.22651460

>>22651455
Unfortunately that seems to be only for the ones that have stuck with me. I've been avoiding using that 'method', if you will, because of my previous experience with it not working in novel situations in the core decks. I can give it a go and actively try to link them to a specific situation; I'm just wary of remembering the context rather than the word itself.

>> No.22651468

>>22651457
Yeah in the past I was doing it pretty badly I think. I'd have the sentence on the front, with the word I was grading myself on bolded. So if I could remember the word, I'd mark it as correct, everything else be damned. I think this gave way too much information specific to the sentence or whatever. It worked, overall, but like you say, it was highly inefficient.

Lately I've just got the word in isolation, and I work from that, but as I show the answer I show the sentence I mined it from along with the reading. I've got no problems doing this when there's a kanji involved 'cause that gives a kind of contextual meaning to the word as it is. But with kana-only words it seems the best case if I'll see the sentence I mined it from and I'll be like "Oh yeah so it was when so-and-so happened", and I'll remember, but then without being able to recall that context prior to seeing the sentence, I fail to recognise the meaning of the kana.

You really only want JMdict and KANJIDIC.

JMnedict comes in handy from time to time but usually it's just annoying and gets in the way. Sooner than install it and keep having to disable and re-enable it, it's best to just look names up on Jisho.org (which also contains the JMnedict data) instead when you need to.

KireiCake is utterly pointless as it's 95% copy-pasted definitions from JMdict, 4% definitions you could figure out easily through intuition and only about 1% actually useful information. JMdict is an open-source project and were the KireiCake ''''''''''''developer'''''''''''' not such a narcissist he could just contribute his few useful definitions to that project... but then he wouldn't get any attention. It's a dictionary with the sole purpose of feeding its author's ego.

Make sure you set the client up properly.

This tool is pretty ancient but it's still the best I know of:
http://infinite-source.de/az/az-calc.html

In qBittorrent:
max upload speed = Options > Speed > Global Rate Limits > Upload
max download speed = Options > Speed > Global Rate Limits > Download
* Max upload slots per torrent = Options > Connection > Connection Limits > Maximum number of upload slots per torrent
Maximum number of connections per torrent = Options > Connection > Connection Limits > Maximum number of connections per torrent
Maximum number of connections globally = Options > Connection > Connection Limits > Global maximum number of connections
Max simultaneous downloads = Options > BitTorrent > Torrent Queuing > Maximum active downloads
Max active torrents = Options > BitTorrent > Torrent Queuing > Maximum active torrents (you can ignore this setting if you want and just set it to 999 instead... otherwise you can disable Torrent Queuing altogether, but you will have to be careful not to have too many active downloads going at once in this case, manually pausing some if necessary while you wait for others to finish, otherwise you will get horrific download speeds and may totally swamp your internet connection causing all your other traffic to go super slow)

* This setting is a special case. Ignore whatever number the calculator gives you for this setting and instead uncheck the box next to it to disable it. Instead of using this setting, you want to use the "Global maximum number of upload slots" setting above it instead.

Take the value for "Max upload slots per torrent" (e.g. 6) and multiply it by "Max active torrents" (e.g. 3), then enter the result into the "Global maximum number of upload slots" field (in the case of the examples I provided here, the result would be 18).

>you can ignore this setting if you want and just set it to 999 instead
(and set the Maximum active uploads figure to 999 as well)

If you find your connection is having trouble, usually the problem will be that your upload speed isn't capped enough, so experiment with the max upload speed setting if you find that the one the calculator gives you problems. If your internet is shitty like mine, you may also need to cap your download speed a little as well, lest your torrent client end up stealing all your bandwidth and preventing you from doing anything else with your connection.

Be warned though, capping your upload speed more than necessary is a very bad idea. The bittorrent protocol favors those who are contributing a lot of data back to the swarm and snubs those who aren't, so typically the more you upload the better treatment (and thus better download speeds) you will get.

yoga said the best way to learn engineering or anything like that is to just drill a ton of practice problems. and in the case of programming, to look at existing programs whose functionality you'd like to mimic. i think he also said you should look up solutions to code challenges and memorize how to do a lot of them.

How many fucking variations are there on numbers, just starting out with anki and was already having some issues with remembering the pronunciation of numbers and the number(objects) counterpart, but now Ive got cards with numbers of days and they have completely different pronunciations as well.
I'm doing well with the non number cards which take up the minority and can tell what the number cards represent but the multitude of different ways to speak is messing with, it feels like I would be better off learning these numbers a different way than anki at first

that guide doesn't say anything about VNs...but anyway you really shouldn't worry too much about VNs until you're more comfortable with manga and anime. ideally you should just consumer whatever you're compelled to consume (i.e. the reason you chose to learn japanese in the first place)

>> No.22656608

>>22656558
you should probably read a couple volumes of yotubato first
some vns are real easy and some are real hard but most are just average and if youve read a little bit before youll probably manage to struggle through them alright as long as youre interested
