Here is the new Choko Hallowe'en single (OP pic) to kick-start things, hopefully the first of many.

Our associate from the denpa song bot just now published an article about all sorts of songs thought to be the originators of denpa music, from the 1990s and before.
https://matome.naver.jp/odai/2157234118535188501

The collection of articles and tweets make up for an amazing image of what people in Japan, among them denpa musicians as well, think of what started denpa music in their eyes. The beginning remains ambiguous, with no clear conclusion, but we know for certain that the image is much larger than before, with originators crossing outside the boundary of otaku culture. It'll take a good step back to fill in all of the missing pieces.

I was reading her Twitter just now, and she retweeted Takanashi Metro's new album release. Takanashi Metro is also a VTuber, and as some Anons already realized in this thread, she is Mameko...

I'm getting flashbacks now of past threads in which it was said that the VTuber market would end up becoming the end of denpa. MMBK is a clear example of this. This is all too weird. Why are so many denpa singers following that path? I guess it isn't too bad when they keep producing music within the denpa spectrum, but still.

do you have any doubt that she is nanahira? I think you guys need to listen to more nanahira songs ... her voice is unmatched, of course it's her, 1 second and it's noticeable.

Mahoro is not a popular vtuber yet. By the way, becoming a popular vtuber today is getting harder and harder as there are so many and if you start now the youtube algorithm will never help you.

If our favorite singers want to become vtuber, then many of them will have to settle for as underground popularity as their denpa career.

Momobako was lucky because she was visionary: she started early and knew how to get subscribers. Besides, momobako has never been number one in the denpa world, we all know that today's queen is nanahira and I think she will hardly want to give up that throne.

I want to be angry at these vocalists, but I have to better understand the current situation of the denpa scene in Japan first. If the current audience is dwindling, and VTuber fans are supportive of their music, then it's only natural for many to try their luck at it before it's completely saturated. I don't think through doujin music alone there could be a new "Nanahira" anymore (and certainly not a new hit denpa band), and it wouldn't surprise me if vocalists didn't want to eroge either. >I don't think through doujin music alone there could be a new "Nanahira" anymore
completely agree, there is too much competition, and people demand more from artists now.

If vtubers are going to remain, I personally would like to see a denpa vtuber enhance their denpa character/persona through their videos, rather than do something completely separate, it's frustrating that none have done that yet. MMBK's early vtuber videos on her old youtube channel did that and they were quite enjoyable. but she deleted them and switched to Patra.

Maybe that's part of the problem uwu

Seriously though I don't really know how they spend their time when they're not working on albums, maybe they don't do it full time. Maybe they work a day job. If that's the case then I can understand why replacing their day-job with vtubing wouldn't really impact their denpa careers. I still wish they wouldn't completely shut down their denpa personas, that's really annoying. Also yeah like you say I'd rather they do something more denpa-adjacent instead of joining with the generic vtuber archetype, which is kind of lacking in personality in my opinion.

>>22401886
I'm not really mad at them, I just don't think the vtuber music is going to be that great by comparison to their previous musical work, or at least it hasn't really delivered yet for me personally. I don't see why a mature composer would give their best work to a sideshow.

Yes you might be right there!
I often think about that too, especially around the time of M3. They probably sell a few hundred (?) CDs at most at the event, then some more online, there's no way that's full time. Especially when you factor in all the people who get a cut or paid along the way, singers, designers, mixers, manufacturers! Denpa is sustained on love alone!

So how many denpa artists have there been? We all know the scene has always been pretty small, but what are the numbers? Personally I have works from some ~80 different labels, then add inn another 50~100 from the "Denpa Thread" and "RTL" packages, getting a total of some 150~200. Let's say /jp/ only hears about the more popular artists, then the total could be some 400~600 maybe?
I get the impression the scene is dominated by relatively few (10~20) big names, with little attention for others, at least here. Though if one actually wanders around Comiket and M3, then maybe things are different? At least within the resources I have, there seem to be a lot of artists with just 1-3 releases, before they either dissapear or their work stops making it overseas.

Your estimate is probably too rough. I expect around two hundred known artists, bands and circles consolidating the denpa thread uploads leading up to 2018. These are traditionally contained within the scope of denpa music. Then you need to consider:
1. eroge scene vocalists not included above (as in, those without prominent commercial or doujin careers)
2. moe-denpa style music performed before the coining of "denpa music" (manikyuadan, troubadour, few 80s and 90s idols)
3. denpa music with little moe elements, mostly before coining (king show, early iosys, fruity)
4. moe music with little denpa elements, mostly before coining (anakreon, neruneruneruge, eterna musik)
5. denpakei in anime and game OST (often overlapping with above)

Accounting both the bands and circles as well as each recognizable denpakei vocalists and musician within them (in IOSYS alone there are several), I'd say 300-400 over the past ~30 years is a feasible number.

>> No.22415517

>>22415285
Hmm, on the one hand I feel 400 is quite low, especially since we are including all participants of denpa production, including "protoculture". On the other hand, the /jp/sies which collect and upload denpa are quite passionate, and I know for a fact there are people here who attend Comiket and/or M3 at least some years. Not to mention scraping shops for used/new CDs.

The major "X-factor", I think, is estimating just how much of the scene these threads cover. I assumed somewhere within 1/2 to 1/3, why do you assume 1/2 to 2/3?

This reminds me of the album Summer Paradise by 中央食堂. As a matter of fact なゆ sings one of the better songs in that album, "Blue Ocean and Faint Love".
The more I think about it, the relatively fast rhythm combined with the "twang" (?) in the vocalists voices might be why I like 了法寺ディスコ so much. The way they keep stretching out vocals is nice. Not to mention the MC, who stands in great contrast to their cute voices. Another song which uses a male somewhat similarily is はるあマッスルトーナント ~愛の革命デスマッチ~ by はる*あま*にゃ. I like that as well, but it's quite different from 了法寺ディスコ. Unfortunately I haven't heard another とろ美 song quite like it, maybe あまね had more of an influence in its production? It's a duet (trio?) after all. Anyone here who has listened to あまね?

I noticed that the male vocals in both 了法寺ディスコ and the はる*あま*にゃ song are from different members of COOL&CREATE, as is Amane. And Yamajet has worked with her before as well. I'm not familiar with a lot of the works by members of this circle. I agree with what you say about the vocals stretching out in 了法寺ディスコ, Amane's part in the bridge mid-song being most memorable to me ever since the first time I heard. I'll have to give more listening to her now. Forgive me for not understanding your question correctly, you were looking for a song by Toromi, but I can't think of another one either...

I am just looking for similar songs in general. I have listened almost all songs by とろ美 , yet none have the feeling of 了法寺ディスコ.
Looking at COOL&CREATE, it turn out that あまね and ビートまりお (the male MC) are married. Furthermore, the circle has been going since 1998. あまね is one of the duo in はる*あま*にゃ, which I probably should have noticed before now...
COOL&CREATE seems to have a pretty large discography, so I will have to look into whether I can get my hands on some of it. They have supposedly done several collabs with other artists, and have a lot of 2hou arranges, so that may be easier to find. As of now, I guess trying to check if they have similar songs is my best bet.

Why? They don't understand japanese, so it's not like they'll get the songs anyway. You say "need", but I fail to see why western "otaku" would need denpa, and why denpa would "need" western "otaku". Especially for the second point I absolutely fail to see the "need" factor. Look at the one doujin scene which actually is popular in the west. The kind of people who import ero-doujins are the same kind of people who already know about denpa. The kind of people who wouldn't import are the kind who think a dakimakura is peak perverson and are incapable of enjoying anything without doing it "ironically". Or do you propose we add in a middle man to localize and translate denpa to publish it in the US? I say the US, because 70 % of the time someone says "westerners" they think of americans.

Perhaps my choice of words wasn't the best, I admit it. Don't think too hard about it. I don't think denpa "needs" us western otakus.

Lastly, think of Christianity and how its members are always trying to get other people to read the Bible and stuff, how they would like the whole world to believe in what they believe. You could liken me and my ideas to them in a way. late but regarding ごーいん:
A lot of it is really forgettable. Even having dumb english lyrics like in senpai notice me doesn't save the song from being repetitive and particularly bland with a lot of generic edm feel to it. It's very undenpa. The titular track is basically a repeat of sleep. The most interesting track on the album (aside from the extended edits, like PAPAYAPA BASS, which is good because it takes advantage of nanahira's lower register) is super slow internet-san because it bothers to give us something other than nanahira yelling fast over some EDM and gives us a break once in a while.
Regarding camellia in general for electronic stuff he's okay but has a tendency to give up on an interesting idea halfway through the track, or he tries to make it *too* hardcore and it becomes a wall of noise, which is a shame because he's shown he can make decent speedcore in the past. Personally it feels like with the electronic tracks he's intentionally making something which will end up being difficult when his english-speaking fanbase charts it in osu at the expense of listenability.

On the theme of underwear and denpa music, I tried translating IOSYS's "kiss me no panty":

The hilarious title made me curious. The Japanese gets pretty hectic at times so there's probably still some work to do before I put it on my blog. I now also realize that the "kiss me" in the title refers to "Kisume", the boss whose theme is the basis for this denpa arrangement. Fun song.

This may be kind of obvious, but isn't it interesting that a big majority of denpa is in a major key? Minor key denpa does exist, though, and I can name quite a few songs off the top of my head, but more often than not it isn't a "fully fledged" minor key being used. Maybe that's because most denpa songs are geared towards sounding happy and not sad? It is mostly an upbeat genre, although I think what you are saying is that more can be explored by contrasting the cute voices against music that is in a minor key, because it has that 'foreboding' sound, which makes sense. I don't have a really good ear for picking this stuff out if it isn't very obvious. What is a good MOSAIC.WAV song you could give as an example?

Indeed. Would you say such a trait is fundamental to denpa? Does music get less denpaish if its sound is sadder, if it's more serious while on a minor key?

There may be better picks, but to exemplify what I meant I can name two songs: もののあはれ (吟游Planet AKIBA-POP) and 花一匁 (Miracleluminal AKIBA-POP!!). The two of them are very Japanese sounding, but I think there should be no problems with saying they are in a minor key.

MOSAIC.WAV having been able to produce "serious sounding denpa" may be related to the fact that the aforementioned circle isn't afraid to stray a little from the current trend of denpa (what some have named "moe denpa"). Other circles' music, on the other hand, completely gravitate around it: their very identity is all about the cuteness and whatnot. Thus, it can be hard for them to make music that doesn't blend that well with their most fundamental part, with their "heart".

Seems denpa can be any kind of music, which is why I'm so perpetually attracted to the genre.

For me, some of the simplest melodies can be the most heartfelt in spite of whatever is going on in the lyrics. That is the pure and simple sweetness I find most wondrous of any music. I must say that the Japanese in general seem to have an exceptional sensitivity to this, especially those most notable in the production of moe denpa. A beautiful melody is only more intensified when propelled by such mesmeric voices, also.

I've seen and heard that MOSAIC.WAV has some very interesting lyrics, and their music can be quite complex... I'm so glad denpa is made up of such a vast array of talented artists.

To me your Soundcloud profile reads as that of someone trying to harken back to their childhood and relive its memories as truly as possible. While I can see how denpa can resonate with someone who likes children's music, the converse is a more fraught relationship. I don't think many denpa fans want to collect or discuss children's music, or be regarded as doing so. On the contrary, I think that association would drive a lot of fans away from an already fragile genre. Overall I'd recommend lurking moar, you kind of hit the thread like a bull in a china closet.

Damn, I tho denpa threads just died and haven't checked back for more than a month so it took me long to catch up.

Random question, does anyone here know japanese? Is it normal to listen to denpa music without being japanese proficient? I've been collecting denpa music for at least 6-7 years now but I don't speak japanese, I like the way the *loli* vocals sounds and the beat/music and happy feelings that almost always the come with.

If I'm really interested in a song, I seldom search for the lyrics either translated or untranslated (to use with Google-translate) but otherwise I don't have any idea of what 80% of the music I've bought and/or collected says.

As for my japanese "level" I only know how to read hiragana, katakana and as much vocabulary as more than a decade of watching anime can teach you (not much).

I'd like to have more discussion on lyrics and see more translations in order to understand that end of the composers' works, but unfortunately there's not much I can personally do. I once painstakingly assembled the kanji, by eye, for melo9's はじ*こい into google translate, and wasn't the least bit surprised to find that such a sweet sounding song would have just as sweet and simple lyrics. Of course there are loads more to appreciate in what denpa has to offer than there is with just a simple moe song that has "ai rabu yuu" as crown of the chorus, and that having a full understanding of the culture is key to deciphering its more implicit, otaku-oriented facets.
Aside from recognizing commonly used words and phrases in the lyrics sometimes, mostly all I can do is wrap my imagination around a title and wonder how it all relates. The music is oftentimes so crazy and so laden with lyrics that I wonder should it matter to a gaijin music admirer like myself to understand every bit of what I'm listening to, since I'm not an otaku.
Still, music being the universal language that attracted me in the first place, it is very interesting to learn a lot about it here, so I'm very grateful for all my denpa teachers.

- Some of the highs raped my eardrums
- Breaks were too loud
- Auto-tune fucking sucks. Nobody wants to listen to auto-tune. If you want to sing then find your range, practice and work within those boundaries. Realize male vocals are not cute.

That's like the whole point of a denpasong, right? That it should at least be unusual and somehow strangely addictive. True denpa should never be so formulaic, which so much of the new stuff seems to be anymore, and it's like they don't even consider letting one track on an album be so set apart from the rest that it would come close to being actual denpa, imo.

The past denpa threads are archived in warosu, so you can get a pretty good image of what it was like by simply looking them up. I think they go back to around 2011-2012 in some form or another.

>>22609737
What sort of denpa discussions were there before the threads? Maybe they were within some older file sharing repositories, or through some instant messaging platforms.

This reminds me, I once bought an Odenpa Studio cd not realizing it was a 'best of' compilation, and that all the songs on it were already uploaded from cds past, except for one, the chicken nuggets song (at least not the full version). Essentially, factoring in the cost of the proxy buyer's s&h, I paid an exorbitant amount of money for just that one song, but at least we were able to complete the Odenpa collection with it, and I was happy when someone pointed out the McDonald's jingle in that song, which had flown by my ears completely unnoticed at first.

>>22609737
I wondered if in the threads back then did most of the fans who were collecting and uploading know Japanese, and were able to understand all the lyrics?

My first exposure was in 2015 I believe. There is no real way to recreate the initial feeling of listening to such music, but yeah. The first memorable album for me was probably the Alice in Wonderland themed album by circle I cannot recall. There was cat ears and tails involved in the album art. If anyone know which album I may be referencing, lemme know.

Koko has announced a decrease in activity following deteriorating health. She's ceased doujin activity since her guest appearance in NanosizeMir's "オール電波", but will return to perform in projects without time constraints. Koko will likely never be able to return to her past scope of activity and make a full recovery. Let us fellows of the denpa thread send our prayers of good health to her.

I love this song! The chords and melody are so chromatic and harmonically rich that it compliments the sweetness of the rest of the song very well.

Does anyone recognize the sound of the synth playing the chord at 0:44? Is it just this composer in particular or is that synth used a lot in denpa? What type of synth generates that sound (additive, fm, etc.)? It's such a distinct sound.

The synth at the beginning of 渋々プールに行ったらウォータースライダーから 幼女が流しそうめんみたいに滑ってきた件 from おでんぱ スタジオ's うぉーたーぱーくパラダイス reminded me of the one you posted. Don't take my word for it, but I think I've heard it other times in denpa too.

I will say what I've been saying for a while: if Nanahira's works keep being like this when she works with Kamellia, they should definitely stop working together. They've created some good songs in the past, sure, but the path they've been following lately hasn't been the best, at least in my opinion.

>> No.22625824

>>22625820
I blame Camellia, it feels like he just wants to make his music faster and faster.

>> No.22626269

>>22625824
there is plenty of good fast denpa music though.
personally it's two things:
- camellia keeps trying to produce rhythm game bait (for beat saber, etc) so he gives up a lot of musicality for rhythmic density = more notes
- he keeps pushing nanahira into a more hyper space, which is not exactly where she shines

super slow internet san is easily one of the best songs on the album because it takes its time and lets nanahira shine in her proper range.

Man, that sucks... Things aren't looking bright for her, but I hope from the bottom of my heart that she can have a good recovery. Even if we don't see her anymore in denpa, she'll always be remembered fondly.

Even though I do like Camellia quite a lot, I do think that lately he's producing to many songs oriented to rhythm games. Maybe he should make more melodic songs again for a change, he's good at that.

I've had this melody stuck in my head for a while and I can't remember what it is for the life of me. I played what I remember on the accordion. Does it ring a bell? I probably not playing it completely correct, but that's what I remember.

It was either from Lovelicot, 桃箱 & miko, dmp, or another circle with a sound similar to those. Imagine hyperactive with lots of syncopation and harmony.
