I just don't like anime adaptations of VNs. What's the point? I understand adapting manga, but what does a shitty anime with piss poor animation bring to the table? The VN already has color, music and sound. Anime adaptations are just a poor retelling of the story at most.

I wish all anime adaptations of VNs were replaced with 26 episodes of goofy shenanigans or random unconnected scenes that are cool to look at, things that couldn't fit into the VN and would only be possible in anime form. That is much better than just a watered down retelling.

Just like how fanart focuses on cool scenes that happened in the VN, I wish anime would just be a collection of 20 minutes long scenes, totally disconnected from each other. Like something you sit down to admire, not to follow an actual story because that's what the VN is for.

An anime could work pretty well as long as they don't make it a 1:1 adaptation of the VN. Most of Ciconia is people talking in the bath. Keep the conversations, but play them over other scenes, like training or combat. This would also fit with the theme of parallel processing. You just need a quick shot to establish who's talking to who in the bath.

I think this is the issue with anime adaptations. They shouldn't be focusing on "adapting the plot", they should be their own original material that makes sense as an anime product, not a retelling of a VN plot that wasnt made with the shortcomings of animation in mind. I wish the entirety of the Higurashi anime was like the Nekogoroshi OVA or the filler arc at the beginning of the first season. New stuff doing things at its own pace, without having to cramp a story written in VN format into 20 minute episodes.

Anime adaptations shouldn't even have to worry about "making room for the plot", because they shouldn't be trying to be a replacement for the VN in the first place. Nobody should be watching an adaptation before the original work, and nobody gives a shit about "understanding the plot" if they are watching the anime after the VN. They just want to see the good bits animated, so why not focus on that and abandon all pretensions of telling a story.

The novel says that humanity reached 10 billion before WW3, and it has now recovered that number once again.

My theory is that WW3 never happened. Most of the "dead" were simply tricked into joining a cult that ended with them and their families being killed in the factory to make spiritium, while very few of them were chosen to become brains living in VR. The outside world's population recovered over time and the factories were sealed by intentional disasters/military attacks. Information about WW3 was covered up because it's all a lie and there was never a war.

Not a single character in the story is a VR brain... yet. But some people from the B3W era are already brains in jars.

They adapted Higurashi which was highly adaptable, especially in that period of anime. Since that went so well (and ONLY because it went so well) they adapted umineko next. Umineko's anime was terrible and didn't sell though, so they didn't make a second season.
Ciconia is cool but it doesn't really have the same context Umineko had, and Higurashi is kind of outdated already. It's not impossible that it gets an adaptation, but it's way less likely than Umineko's anime was.

Phase 1 is the equivalent of Onikakushi/Watanagashi or EP1/EP2. Satoko and Rika are in the background, Irie isn't introduced yet, the siblings all die except Natsuhi and Rosa, there are barely any characters in the meta layer, etc.

You only get to know a small portion of the cast in those, so it's "only natural" that we don't know shit about anyone outside the AOU.

I love how you can know more about Yasu's character by analyzing how she narrates the first two episodes and how she portrays each character in the story. It's fascinating.

Kinzo in particular changes a lot. He starts off as a crazy lunatic (partly the fault of Natsuhi and Krauss who need to make it look like he's senile and won't come out) who doesn't give a shit about his family and wants to sacrifice them to demons. Then Tohya takes over and he becomes a bit more sympathetic while still being pretty crazy. He is practically absent from the two Ikuko episodes featuring her self-insert detective. Then we get his backstory in EP7 and we get to see his good ol' grandpa side in EP8, now that Tohya remembers more about him.

Battler admits that EP8 is a farce, but he insists that the Kinzo thing is actually true. The Kinzo in the halloween party is how he used to be when Battler was a kid, he was a good grandfather with some weird hobbies.

I think this is all hinting at the fact that the world of EP7 is a fantasy as imagined by Yasu.

How come Lion can only exist in this one world where he gets killed by Kyrie? What about other realities where Lion exists and the massacre doesn't happen? The answer is that this world is a fantasy. And Bern is trying to lock up this fantasy in the regular catbox, where every tale always ends with the explosion and everyone dead, no matter what. This is why Lion can't avoid this fate, even though it makes no sense from a multiverse perspective. Because Lion never got the chance to exist IRL, Lion is just an idealized version of Yasu imagined by her. A fantasy. And Bern is heartlessly trying to force this fantasy world into the catbox, which must end with the explosion.

When Will fights Bernkastel and tells Lion to "keep fighting" and "refuse to accept that he was shot", he's trying to keep the fantasy alive, out of the catbox. Lion's world is a fantasy and so is he, so there is no reason for them to be constrained by the rules of the catbox. His world isn't restricted by reality and can go its separate way, having a happy ending where everyone goes back home.

So, I just finished Phase 01 a couple of minutes ago. It was definitely different from the previous WTC entries. Like, for one, I just don't see the mystery factor at play, considering nearly all factions are known, we know who is doing what (even if their identities are concealed). I also think this first part of the story was rather lacking in impact compared to Onikakushi and Legend of the Golden Witch in which, sure you had some introduction that wasn't particularly eventful, but as soon as the killings started you ended up in a downward spiral which was one hell of a ride, whereas in Phase 01 of Ciconia, you have events happening all over the world, all of which pack some serious developments in the world, but the relevant characters aren't personally affected until the very end when Miyao kills Lingji.
The biggest change, though, is that it seems that in Ciconia we won't have events repeating themselves time and time again until they find a way out of their predicament, but it seems Phase 02 will continue from where Phase 01 left off.

As for the characters, Miyao was okay, but he wasn't fun like K1, or made me angry like Battler did in EP1. The treatment of the side characters was kinda off, as we start with focus on Jayden and Gunhild, but then as soon as the Order is established, those two are kinda forgotten for a large portion of the story, along with every other character that wasn't the leader of one of the main kettes (i.e. Miyao, Lingji, Rethabile and Stanislaw). The Order started with the idea that all of them had to think for themselves, but it eventually devolved into a Miyao fan club, and somehow no one could think for themselves any more and he had to be the one doing all the thinking. Then there's also Meow. I never understood her purpose in the story, other than some crappy excuse for R07 to add homoerotic romance.

Anyhow, holy shit Chloe is hot as fuck. Like, tatas aside, because plenty of the girls have them, look at those wide hips, for fucks sake. How was every single guy around her not making passes at her is beyond me.

Consider that, even if Higanbana (which wasn't part of the WTC series) didn't involve any mystery, it was still horror (RGD being it sown thing, different from anything R07 had done before). And, whilst war has it's own scary things and the setting in Ciconia is an apocalyptic one, it isn't a horror in the conventional sense, as it lacks that feeling of dread you could get from Higurashi and Umineko. I mean, throughout the story, bad things keep happening, but Miyao always manages to find a way to somewhat deal with things, but it isn't until the very end that things go completely south for the main characters. No, I perfectly agree with this, there are a lot of recurring themes about how people, especially in a social-media infested era (of which selcoms are just a different manifestation) have grown too distant from war. It either happens far too distant from you (involving drones to begin with, so you have not to worry about the loss of human life) or it's literally a game in the Battle Standard Festival of Peace. This has lead to people forgetting what 'Peace' even means, it's something you realize how heavy it is when you lose it. Generally speaking, I think the novel goes to great lengths to make sure we the readers understand the mentality of this (unchanging) world.

My problem is that somehow impacts the narrative, at least for me. For how long the story is, it feels to me it lacks a lot in events actually impacting our main characters and it repeats the same themes too many times -in the same way-. "In the same way" being the deal breaker for me there. The subject of the sprouts of evil, gauntlet knights being merely a medicine that is not fixing an underlying problem, the subjectivity of justice, the need to rebel so that "pieces" can be promoted to "players" are all recurring and very interesting, but too many times it's just Ryukishi saying the very same things with slightly different words without expanding and going more indept compared to when they were introduced.

It's strange, it's the first time I find a story so interesting in concept and yet I have to push myself through past the middle point.

That does add to the dramatic ending, I do admit it, since it feels that the only person truly believing fully to this (either due to naivete or blind idealism) was Miyao himself. Most of the others merely either followed suit due to peer pressure, not wanting to offend anyone else, or are downright lying.

Let's be clear: the order would've never worked since its very inception, you cannot merely hope that following each own sense of justice will automatically lead to a good result just because the members are all Guardians of the Walls (aka having the same job). Since the very beginning, I wondered for how long this happy mental world would've lasted since an immediate problem came to my mind: what the hell happens if a member believes he's acting as a force for peace, while another one considers that a sprout of evil? This never really comes up in the phase, but the conclusions are quite telling, since they'd obviously fight over it (either in words or actions) and while no one would die due to the "let them escape" rule, what are they doing is still the anti-dialog thing Toujirou was complaining about early on: the opinion of the strong becomes truth. So it's just war, nothing has changed, even within the Order that was acting as if it wanted to change everything.

The early discussion between Toujirou and Seshat is really the key, if you ask me. Humanity has slightly changed the subject (from war is evil to war is good), but has not learnt anything. The A3W and B3W worlds are exactly the same cake with a different frosting on it, what we need is a complete revolution in how civilization itself thinks, acts and fixes itself.

But I like how each series has its own visual style. Higurashi sprites have massive hamhands, big Key eyes and color-coded characters with super shiny hair. Umineko sprites have slightly smaller hamhands, more uniform colors that look like they've been filled in with the Paint bucket tool, and more realistic hair colors for the humans. Higanbana sprites are like Umineko's but everyone has really dark shadows and the backgrounds are more stylized in their blurriness to produce a cold/heartless effect.

I never pay attention to that shit. I pay far more attention to the text and music than I do the actual artwork, so I choose whichever artstyle I find to be more pleasing to look at and easier to immerse myself in. I trust the narrative and tone to convey emotion, not the art.

I read vns a lot how I read the book. I use sprites and backgrounds as a frame of reference to help me imagine the scene, not as a 1:1 portrayal of the scene. Janky sprites make that harder to extrapolate.

The original backgrounds do a much better job of making the locations look mysterious and alien. And since they are pictures, they often capture random details that are interesting to look at and wouldn't be present in a clear drawing made from scratch where every little thing is deliberately placed there.

Same with the sprites. Whenever Ryuukishi needed to portray a certain emotion that wouldn't fit any of the previous sprites... he would just draw a new face for the character. That's how Higurashi and Umineko got new facial expressions in each episode. He would just draw the perfect face for the situation and add it to the list of available faces. Having some professional artist reproduce his sprites in their own style doesn't always fit, because the faces will inevitably be different in some way no matter how faithful the new artist tries to draw them. It's a huge problem with the console Higurashi sprites, because they fail at subtlety and often look out of place.

Why the fuck did they give him blue eyes in PS3? It looks weird as fuck. Shiny colored eyes were a witch thing, it just looks tacky on Battler.

I also dislike how they made Lambda's hair really yellow instead of white-ish. She no longer looks like Miyo, Vier or Jestress, even though they are supposed to have the same yellowish white hair color.

And what about the pupils? Many magic characters have shiny dead eyes with no pupils, including Bernkastel and the two traps. The PS3 art feels way too different. Their eyes are too grounded in reality and there's no magic or inhumanity to them.
