Am I the only one who sucks at playing Touhou?

I still haven't beaten the 12 demo on Easy Mode after an hour.

>> No.2226687

I suck nuts, too. I beat MoF and SA on easy, but I can finish PCB on easy (got past the stage 6 boss but got killed by the next boss/ form of the same boss)

On normal, I can't even reach stage 5 in MoF.

this for me as well. I have yet to beat Sakuya, Youmu, Aya and Rin on normal. I managed to clear UFO normal pretty quickly, though. Use SanaeA, it's great.

>> No.2226727

Me too, I only barely managed to beat EoSD extra yesterday.

>> No.2226726

You guys talking about 1cc or using continue?

Beating the game with continue is easy. I can't 1cc UFO yet though. Always die to fucking brofist.

without cont of course. If anyone of you has been this bad and got any better, feel free to share how you did it.

2226727 here, I played a lot of Touhou. That might work better than posting on /jp/.

>> No.2226758

Just play a lot. You will get better eventually, trust me. I went from being unable to beat IN normal with continues (completely serious) to 1CCing every game on normal and some on hard.

Also, make sure to take it easy while playing, taking breaks when needed. If you're angry, you'll just end up making stupid mistakes. At least that's how it is for me.

Those are the same thing (1cc = one credit clear, credit = continue). You may be thinking about a no-hit clear.

This is absolute truth. Take it easy (in b4yukkuri), be calm - remember you're playing this for enjoyment, not to beat everything.

Also, quick suggestion - powerbomb madly through the game to open all stages in Practice, then go and practice them a few times each. Try to not bomb at all, and mind less about survival - try to see the patterns, it's more important.

>> No.2226782

I've never beaten EoSD (which is the only one I've played really) without continues. One day I'll figure out how to beat Sakuya but till then I suck pretty bad.

I've played three or four other Touhou games before this one and it took me two months to beat the demo disk of Subterranean Animism on Easy Mode. For other Touhou games, the furthest I've ever made it is around Stage 4 or 5 on Easy Mode.

>> No.2226874

>it took me two months to beat the demo disk of Subterranean Animism on Easy Mode
Are you serious? You'd have to commit suicide to not clear Easy Mode.

>> No.2226882

A lot of people have lost before they even begin, under the impression they are going to lose because it's a hard game, and since that's expected they don't need to give it 100%.

It's a hard game, but touhou is really not a hard STG, especially on the easy difficulty. You can do it, but not with this defeatist attitude.

Some advice though, in UFO if you are playing for survival only collect red UFO’s when you can. And when they appear let them fill up with collectables until the meter flashes and shoot them down. Extends ahoy.

>> No.2226927

>>2226882

This. UFO's way of gaining extra lives is extremely easy, so even if you die often, you'll be gaining a ton of extends to at least carry you throughout the demo.

I "1cced" Normal on my 4th try, and ever since I found out how you can get extra lives, I 1cc it almost consistently. Now I'm just practicing spellcards so I don't die to them.

I get the feeling that once you reach 4.00 Power, you should always have a few (1-2 at least) spare bombs, so that you don't (die and) lose 1.00 power.

>> No.2226971

>>2226948
bombs are for the weak

>> No.2226984

Collecting only red UFOs isn't the optimal survival route because of the fixed colored UFOs. You should also collect green and rainbow UFOs as appropriate, eg. on stage 1 you can get 3 extends, even if the first UFO you summon is a rainbow UFO.

>> No.2226986

The most powerful character is SanaeB.

>> No.2227005

>>2226986
Maybe.
Important in UFO is to be able to shoot down single enemies with lots of HP (namely the UFOs and all the annoying fairies that fly in the way).

Both of Sanae are pretty good. Reimu A and Marisa A are good too (but Master Spark sucks and cripples your movement / Reimu's exorcism dance is awesome)

>> No.2227010

>>2226984
Why would you specifically go for a rainbow UFO? I thought those where for when you messed up and picked up a blue one by mistake.

>> No.2227020

I don't think I suck, I'm just not good enough yet. Been trying to beat EoSD on normal for a week now, I can get to Patcouli without losing a life, but I always need to use a continue at 5th stage, Sakuya is too damn hard, all those pads...um knives.

>> No.2227043

>>2226769
Doesn't a no-hit clear mean that you don't lose any lives?
That's not what he meant, I believe.

>> No.2227047

>>2227010
Because you get it for free out of otherwise wasted UFOs.

>> No.2227054

>>2227010
you can't always collect 3 red UFOs, especially on the harder difficulties where the screen will be filled with bullets if you don't summon and destroy a UFO in time.

In stage 1 for example, you collect the first 3 red UFOs, summon and destroy. Then there spawn UFOs that are not red and don't switch colors. If you summon a rainbow UFO and destroy it, you have the exact same number of UFOs (and more power and higher score (if you care about that)) when the midboss spawns as you would have when you didn't collect them. Also, the screen is cleared (not important in stage 1, but later on).

Also, the rainbow UFOs drop 2 switching color UFOs, that way, you don't waste any of them.

>> No.2227055

>>2227043
It's usually called "No Miss", or "1 Life Clear" (1fc).

>>2227010
And don't forget rainbow UFOs give you an extra mini-UFO when you fill them.

>> No.2227080

>>2227054
And if you don't have enough incorrectly colored UFOs to make a rainbow UFO, it's best to collect them while another big UFO is on screen. You'll get the point value increase but it won't be counted towards your combo and it won't get in the way later.

>> No.2227094

>>2227054
I didn't mention Rainbow UFO's because I didn't want to confuse, as we can see from the replies once you get more complicated than "collect red" it's all a bit vague.

I would just recommend getting Red, and you end up with another colour, go Rainbow (as it'll spit out another UFO -> Red). Green UFOs are pretty worthless for survival and score, unless there's some bombing hotspots I haven't seen.

>> No.2227144

>>2227094
>Green UFOs are pretty worthless for survival and score
That's because, as it is now, you not only lose a bomb when you bomb, you also lose any bomb star-pieces you've collected (that means 1 or 2; or so I've heard, I don't look at my bomb meter ingame), but the green UFOs get you higher score than red ones.

>> No.2227368

>>2227144
But if you're going for score rainbow and blue are far better. There's never a time when it is optimal.

>> No.2227431

>>2227094
Green and Red UFOs are virtually even. You keep bombs when you die now, so if you make nothing but Green UFOs, play it safe, bomb often, and die with no bombs, it's the same as making all Red UFOs and making use of your 2 bombs per life. Either way, dying with anything but 0 bombs = waste, particularly since you lose a whole 1.00 of power per death.

Also, Green UFOs can actually have a multiplier of 2.0 on occasion, while Red can't go above 1.0., so you can feed Green UFOs and still get a slightly higher score than doing a run and making nothing but Red.

>> No.2227446

>>2226685
I suck horrendously. I can't get passed stage 4 of any game in the series. ButI play on normal and I'd rather die than play easy modo.

>> No.2227483

>>2227431
If you die with less than 2 bombs in stock you are handed bombs, making lives more desireable if you are spaming them. Given this entire thread and string of replies is about helping someone really bad clear Easy, that is the primary concern. The secondary was not being confusing with "oh but you want green on that bit, get a rainbow one at the start, etc."

Score is irrelevant. Nobody deciding between bombs and lives should be factoring which of the two multipliers is the least shit.

>> No.2227534

>>2227483
If it's just survival, you still want to pick Green over Red. You may have more lives going Red, and while you may have lives to spare, you deal with the massive power loss. Green allows you to bomb your way through what you're bad at while dealing with power loss less often. Also, if you have several lives, but die without using the bombs for those lives due to bad mojo or the like, it's also a waste. And with the ridiculous strength of ReimuA, MarisaA, and SanaeB's bombs, why wouldn't you pick Green if you just want to clear the game?

>> No.2227551

>>2227534
That only works if you always know where you're going to die. I often die by running into stray slow shots that I didn't see, so there's no chance of deathbombing.

>> No.2227579

>>2227551
Stuff like that fucks you over in UFO period. I guess if that's your main cause of death and playing it really safe bomb-wise doesn't work, Red does end up being a better choice.

>> No.2227662

Do you even get more lives from points anymore?

>> No.2227789

I dont think Marisa A is a good choice for surviving. She has awesome damage output but her attack has little spread. So you have to always stay under bosses.
Also she probably suffers the most from the power loss when dieing.
