Is there any particular node that gives you more trouble than the others?
I tend to run Ise/Hyuuga each with a dive/seaplane bomber, which might help stabilize the route. The boss fight is incredibly low powered, so you don't have to worry too much about their lack of FP or AP shells. I also run 3 fighters/1 bomber for LBAS 1 and 2/2 for LBAS 2. With a ducky, this completely deplanes the boss and her CVLs a good chunk of the time, effectively neutering the node.

This isn't specific to but 5-5, but the Iwamoto fighter would be my first priority. It's the best fighter in the game, unless you've been playing since 2013, and even comes with some LOS. Having it can free up other slots where you normally might need to put radars or seaplane fighters.
Other than that, you should really upgrade your BB guns for the FP and accuracy boosts.

The main issue there is that night Akagi's slots are pretty bad. Even with the elite squadron evasion bonus, there's a decent chance of the 16 slots getting deranked. Besides Abukuma and anti-installation CLs, when's the last time you used a CL with double 15.2cm guns in an event map. When you do use CLs, you normally just put 20.3cm guns on them because their base FP and night battle damage are so low you need every single point of damage you can get.

They are not wrong. Random routing mean instant loss a quarter of the time. You can't win when you can't get to the boss node. HP regen was stressful as fuck and there wasn't a difficulty setting. If you can't beat the maps, you just can't. Hence you get something like 15% clear rate vs the 90% clear rate that we just got for summer 2019.

You can only have so many FBBV in combined fleets right, so many times you end up needing more firepower or air power and end up swappnig in CAV right? Well Sanshiki allow CAV to have higher firepower and AA plus bonus damage against certain enemies right? So maybe it isn't a bad idea to have an extra.

I'm a 2 year player as well and I never cared about equipcolle. Not having a chance in hell of completing it aside I just really enjoy all the thinking and planning ahead that the game requires. I feel like there's always something to do that requires actual planning or brain capacity even during idlecolle periods. For me playing catch-up may actually be a bit of a blessing in disguise, it keeps me engaged. The game hasn't lost its charm at all for me and there's no other game like it.
