to ask where's something, say "[place name]はどこですか？"

you'll naturally pick up a lot more words, phrases, etc. after watching tens or hundreds of hours of japanese media, so don't worry about having to do much conscious study. sure, you can read sections off tae kim or imabi's guides if you want to, but it should only be for the sake of clearing up doubts about stuff you come across in media and the like, not as an actual supplement to learning through media.

I just played Doukyuusei 2 myself, I can recommend pretty safely. The dating sim gameplay can be obnoxious from a modern perspective but the heroines are good and the writing is entertaining. If you struggle to enjoy taking notes and learning the schedules of heroines and such, just google a guide - there's still fun to be had when following it.

Kakyuusei 2 can be more tedious than Doukyuusei due to lasting a whole year instead of just over break but it's not something you should avoid playing per se. Sure there's Tamaki and her boyfriend hijinks but it's really not that bad when you see it for yourself, it just got overblown by obnoxious otaku, and worse case scenario, you can just focus on another heroine.
