You may be right. I didn't rep all day long though, so it took me two days to clear the whole thing. Once I get deeper into meditation, I think I will be able to rep faster. Today I had 180 reviews and did them all while waiting before and between classes in uni. Took about an hour. And I don't have any vocab/anime cards, only sentence cards, which take longer to rep.

Really don't think people should stick to core until the end. The second important thing is getting a lot of input. If Anki is the only environment where you encounter the things you are learning of course you'll struggle but if you read and watch shit every day Anki is just reading words and it's fucking easy. >Is the truth that acquisition of Japanese is so gradual that by the time you can consider yourself fluent the novelty will have worn off?
this is the wrong question to ask. the reason why the "novelty" (which is really just the enthusiasm of learning japanese and of getting better at understanding the stuff you wanted to learn it for) wears off is not an intrinsic quality of the process of learning japanese, but a result of the mental habits of the people who set out to learn it.

look at how neurotic most people in this thread are about this process. every unknown word is an "omg i suck" "this language is impossible". they do shit like count and compare their reading speeds and get upset when it doesn't match other people's. they take any improvement for granted, ignoring or quickly dismissing their gains, while always exclusively focusing on the things they (and others) don't know.

even if they do get fluent with this attitude, by that time the language will have become just another thing they beat themselves with. they don't feel excited about it at the "end" because they didn't allow themselves to feel excited about it during the process. they beat the enthusiasm out of it. they do it to themselves.

Right, and a step below the people here is the person who greatly enjoys the novelty of learning. They're the karbin-tier LETS GOOOO types who feel crack levels of pleasure learning hiragana, enjoy about the first 5 kanji they learn, and then burn the fuck out once they realize just how much there is to study. Basically everyone on reddit does this, and you can see it happen every
single
day
There's a happy medium between these two positions, but most people are insecure and that will either manifest with torturing yourself into learning the language so you don't feel bad for quitting, or quitting the second it slows down.

>I think the most important thing is just having fun
Agreed.

Unfortunately, this is more difficult than it sounds. Finding 面白い content, even in a language like Japanese, can prove quite challenging. Not being fluent is always going to reduce your potential enjoyment of something, and the further something is beyond your level, the more true that becomes. The beginning period when you are absolute shit at Japanese is especially tough to get through and really relies on you finding that one golden egg out there which is both relatively easy and fun & interesting (to you in particular).

>I think video games are fun so you know I got a shitton of things to do in Japanese that satisfy my zoomer brain
Here is one thing I specifically wanted to touch on in relation to the above point. Something like a game can really lose its entertainment value when you're having to break away from the gameplay to look up words all the time.

It's a simple fact that most things out there are garbage, though if you're prepared to dig a little, there are plenty of gems to be found... at least if you're a native speaker. As a second language learner, you might dig and still find gems, but many of them will be locked in chests that you don't have the keys to right now, so the selection of fun, interesting content available to you is much more limited than it otherwise would be.

The biggest challenge for me in my 2 years of learning by far has simply been the task of trying to find entertaining, engaging media to consume.

If you're playing games that require you to look up that much stuff, break it down into chunks, or switch to a less text heavy game.
When I was working through Pokemon, I took a day to just learn everything in the menus. Then everything in the stat screen. Then a couple days later, I was out in the world, able to grind/battle as much as I wanted without needing to look anything up, and I could progress whenever I felt like I was ready for new content.
There's an anon here playing Zelda, which similarly doesn't have too much text once the game lets you out into the world.
There are other games too, but those are what I have experience with.

I did nosurf for 2 weeks and its effects are no joke. I remember going outside on the 10th day and it felt like it was the best day of my life. I was looking at a house and it was just the most divine thing I had ever seen in my life.

Is being entertained also not a skill that we can train? I wonder if Matt is right about meditation and that if you can have a clear mind in which there is no room for thoughts that everything just becomes more vibrant and thus easier since the quality of fun is drastically improved. Yet I don't think Matt has reached that point yet.

>step below the people here is the person who greatly enjoys the novelty of learning
enjoying the novelty of learning is not in any way related to staying at a low level. they are two different dimensions. what determines if you get good or not is getting tons of compelling input and making it more and more comprehensible. that's it. what you're describing is people who simply don't do that. without that, no one's getting good, regardless of their attitude. but it's totally possible to fulfill the above requirements for getting good, while enjoying the novelty of every step. it's not an "in the middle" thing, but a "fulfilling both dimensions" thing.

>I wonder if Matt is right about meditation and that if you can have a clear mind in which there is no room for thoughts that everything just becomes more vibrant and thus easier since the quality of fun is drastically improved.
you've got it. it's a proven fact that when the mind has too much activity going on, all of the activities feel less satisfactory than if there was just one focus. it's why multitasking is more stressful and unpleasant than single-tasking. it's why "flow" feels so good - it's literally just fully absorbed single-tasking.
>Yet I don't think Matt has reached that point yet.
so here's a common misunderstanding about meditative practices, and perhaps life/skills in general. there isn't just one point where you "get there" and you're there forever. as you practice, you get tastes of it. those tastes become more common until they can last hours or days at a time. if you stop practicing, they'll become less common again. i'm sure that matt has tasted that place, but still gets distracted and pulled out of it sometimes. still, it's better to be in that calm, clear, aware mental space that's sensitive to wholesome pleasure even 20% of the time, than it is to never be there because your mind is constantly distracted, bogged down and busy.

all "determination" is, is a description of a state of mind. all i'm saying is that if that mental state exists in someone long enough (whether that existence/the length it lasts is "predetermined" or not) then progress is more or less guaranteed to follow.

either we're bound to predestination or we aren't... if you claim that we are then any mental/emotional state we experience must exist within that. including any determination we experience.
>a determined person can still fail to achieve it (look at nuke) because of the lack of other qualities that were also out of his control. He was not predestined to learn.
how do you know he's finished? why do you think your time limit for how quickly someone should learn japanese is anything other than arbitrary? i agree that having determination may not be enough if there are other necessary factors absent. but you don't know whether those factors are completely absent in him, or just slower than other people's. you do not know nuke's future or what his skill level will be 5 or 10 years from now.

so are you adjusting your earlier statement here? or are you still insisting that in a predeterministic model we can somehow still alter the outcome via our own volition (rather than the determination itself also being predetermined)?
>at the rate he has ever managed to learn, I would guess a solid N2 in 10 years, and at most he may get an N1 but only because of grading and not him knocking it out of the park
even if it takes him 30 years to get good, it would still nullify your idea of what was predetermined for him. my point is that you don't, and can't know if he will ever reach that point or not. predictions are only humans hoping to know things they can never know for sure until that time comes.

you're free to ignore this if you want, but i'd like to advise you from personal experience. you probably hit a mental/emotional block and reactively avoided exploring it deeper.

it's basically when your mind goes "what are you doing, we're not used to this" and puts up a wall of resistance to this new practice. anyone who's achieved a consistently fruitful meditation practice had to go through many such blockages. it's not supposed to be smooth sailing the whole way.

breaking through the blockages is like taking off all your clothing in public. you feel totally naked. the parts of your mind that have been wired up until this point to protect you from seeing certain parts of your psyche are trying to get you to keep those clothes on. if you want to go deeper/keep experiencing more of that peace and invincibility, you have to be willing to stay, get naked, and be resolute and patient until the resistant parts of you give up.

there could also be a part of you that's like "wait, you don't deserve to feel this good for this long". a lot of people have subtle self-hate like that, which can also block them from deeper/more consistent progress if it goes unresolved. ask yourself if there's any part of you that feels undeserving or not good enough in some way (an inflated ego can also be a sign of this, since insisting you're better than others can be a coping strategy for feeling less than in the past).

Chrome's font setting options are inferior in every way to Firefox's. The fact that you have to install an add-on which doesn't even work on most sites to even come close to the same level of functionality that Firefox has by default says it all.

the result is inevitable, our society will become dumber until everything collapses it's really just a matter of time

While this song is intentionally surreal, I'm having particular trouble at 1:33 :

>首の縄文を愛してくれる
>彼岸会 また影を見る

I'm assuming it's more like
>首の縄文を愛してくれる彼岸会
>また影を見る

Which so far, I've translated as
>A higan service which loves rope-marked necks
>I see the shadows again

For the first part, I know 縄文 almost always refers to the Jomon period, but given the comments, it seems to be used in a literal way. As the higan festival is usually used to worship dead ancestors, it would fit the tone of the song.

For the second part, it makes sense in context, but it just seems really abrupt and awkward when putting it into English words.

Any other opinions on that line?

A good chunk of your brain is dedicated almost exclusively to see, understand, copy and guess the motive of other people's actions. This is used, among other things, to make you learn languages.
Unless you have the kind of brain problems that keep you from mastering even your own mother tongue, you can learn any language. Because a good chunk of your brain is dedicated to understanding and comunicating with other humans. Every thing you need is already there.
IQ is based on an outdated understanding of the brain, that had the human brain as this thing focused on "high/abstract reasoning" (instead of, you know, it being focused on the things that help you survive living as a wildling).
IQ does mesure something, mind you, and there's strong correlation between a high IQ and performance in certain kinds of academic subjects. But whatever IQ can predict your apititude to language learning is very much doubtful.
If you at least in normal human ranges you're fine.
Now stop making excuses and go study Japanese.

Up until now I've thought that when there's a sequence of verbs in the te-form, their tense is defined by the tense of the last verb, and their subject is the same.
However I've come across this sentence:

その子は留守番をしなければならないと言って怒っていた。
Its official translation is "The boy was cross at having to stay at home."

その子 is clearly the subject of 怒っていた, however, the verb preceding it, 言って, neither has その子 as its subject nor is supposed to be in past gerund. If その子 was the subject then 言う should be in its passive form like 言われて. Woulda made more sense to me.

So, am I overlooking something here? Or is japanese really such a mess that I can (have to) assume the subject and the tense of any verb in te-form?

So I was overlooking something after all. To me it sounds so much that the subject of 言って is the speaker, that I couldn't see it in any other way.

In this case, is there no case in which a subject swich actually occurs when verbs are linked by te-form? Can I always safely assign the same subject to all?

This race to understand japanese was literally always just about finding methods that make you stick to learning it.

Remembering the Kanji is also just placebo but recognizing the kanji at least with the keyword still makes you happy and makes you feel less lost. Anki and spaced repetition in general is a terribly boring chore so finding some methods to spice it up really helps.

The feedback loop in japanese is so fucking slow compared to most other hobbies so it's harder to keep motivated. It's also just another language and not an amazing skill like programming so the pay off is relative to the entertainment you consume with it. Learning japanese is literally just a grind, the only creativity you need is in finding methods that make it enjoyable to learn. im beginning to lose hope that this will ever stop happening. im like 9 months in and it keeps happening for easy ass sentences. i've been doing 2 hours per day of jap subbed anime and i feel like i've made 0 progress in the last 2-3 months. man this is demoralizing.

LEARN THROUGH WHATEVER THE FUCK YOU WANT. let your interest guide you through the process. at the end of the day how "good" you get will only be of practical value in relation to the shit you WANT to consume anyway. if you never liked VN's it's pointless to start them "just to get good at japanese". use the media you WANT to understand, as your foundation.

im reading it and my brain cant parse what is meant and then when i turn on the english subs it seems so fucking obvious
