How much, if at all, should I sentence mine? My listening and reading comprehension is decent; I can usually understand more than half of what I read and listen to (and sometimes most of it). It's important to understand that the difficulty of the MEANING of a kanji is 100% unrelated to how complicated the APPEARANCE of a kanji is. The kanji order of grades in Japanese is organized around mainly the simplicity of MEANING. Elementary schoolers don't have developed minds yet and can't learn complicated or abstract concepts, so they start with "water" and "tree". RTK is for adults, so it's organized around purely the appearance of kanji, ignoring meaning. It is precisely this order that makes RTK so revolutionary! What this means is that yes, you learn many uncommon kanji far before some very common ones. But what this also means is that: every kanji you will learn will be a simple combination of two/three kanji you already know, instead of a random blob of strokes. Combine this with mnemonics and learning them in large quantities becomes easy. If you are planning on becoming fluent, then you are going to need to learn them ALL anyway!! This is why learning all the kanji upfront with RTK actually makes the entire process of getting fluent much quicker and smoother. Think on the long term here, it's an initial investment, and a very good one. Think about it: it takes Japanese people (who are already fucking fluent) close to 10 years to learn to read kanji.... is that what you want to replicate?

Yes, it is possible to learn kanji with context, without any mnemonics. You will learn how to generally READ kanji, but you will end up mixing up kanji like 緑 and 縁 for the rest of your life, and you will also never, ever be able to write kanji out from memory by hand. But even if this is what you wanted to do, it would be better to just start sentence cards and pick them up as you go, not follow the grade system.

Do RTK, you will be happy you did later.
