I finally read it all earlier this year in french (except for that one extra chapter which is not TL'd sadly).
It's fucking amazing, visually it's legitimately the peak of visual novels. It also has Nasu's best writing when it comes to characters, slice of life, and action. Super unique atmosphere, it feels like an old Nasu work while still being its own unique thing. The whole main cast is fantastic, the school's side characters are the best in any TM work so far...
Quite a few things that could be further explored in the planned sequels and that I hope to see one day, but it still works well enough as a self contained story

>> No.21856564

>>21856210
It's alright, feels a lot like putting the KnK movies into an VN format to me for some reason. some very ass-backwards choices made in it's production though, like having "bonus" chapters that take place between main chapters, which are actually important and get referenced in later chapters making my question why the fuck they were ever "bonus" in the first place. mostly thinking of chapter 1.5 I think.

also no voices because nasu which doesn't bother me, but is still a big fucking minus for some people and shouldn't be ignored. The best chapter is also halfway through the game and the most visually pleasing which kinda makes the rest feel more like a long epilogue. then there's also several elements that are teased all the way from the start of the VN only to never be addressed or finished because nasu had them planned for mahoyo 2 and 3. In the end I guess I feel about it like I would have felt about F/SN if f/sn only contained the fate route. I like the characters well enough and the story does have a logical conclusion, there's just obviously more to explore here and it doesn't give me the same "impact" a big dick VN like MLA or Muramasa did, due to only being a fraction of their length. what I will say is that it's miles better than CCC despite being released just one year earlier, fuck everyone shilling that game.

>> No.21856606

>>21856564
How the fuck does stuff past chapter 5 feel like an "epilogue" when that's pretty much when the VN starts for real, and the main characters start living together, which is the main character dynamic of the whole VN?
The fights in chapters 10 and 12 are so much more important, impactful, and interesting than 5's, even if 5 is visually a bit more impressive.
I would say 90% of Mahoyo's best moments happen from chapter 9 onwards, the 2nd half of it is overall much stronger than the first. The side characters also shine a lot more in 8.5.
Could not disagree more with this idea that chapter 5 is in any way the peak of Mahoyo just because it was made later.

Went to the last /fgog/ thread to see what the deal was that you guys mentioned. Turns out our local Aokofag lashed out against the possibility of Aoko getting put into FGO and GOfags exposed their delusions again.

>dude why are you so serious about an eroge and so invested in this LMAO
>they still feel no responsibility for how things have turned out because "FGO would still exist without us lol"
>they don't understand the risk of throwing any existing character into that trash fire
>they don't realize how hard Shiki got fucked in FGO thanks to Void and her self-insert pandering
>they don't understand how much more painful it would be for Mahoyo or Tsuki characters to be put into the gachashit, with no Mahoyo 2 or Remake in sight

What the fuck is wrong with them? Where did they go wrong?
Sometimes I can't help but wonder how we're in the minority. Like yeah, obviously people who aren't that into Type-Moon and don't take it seriously will always be more numerous than those who do... but how are there so many actual hardcore TMfags who still eat up FGO and don't see anything wrong with its growth and TM's obsessive focus on it? Fuck man, everything about FGO just seems so objectively wrong to anyone who cares about Type-Moon, I still don't get the GOfag perspective. They must be close to Nasu's level of delusion.

Really not that interesting or crazy of a discussion but still, their perspective on putting characters into the game, and how seemingly okay they are with non-Fate properties getting ignored other than when they're being put into a shitty gacha game is obnoxious as ever.

>> No.21866795

the shitty FGO writing and lore rape bothers me, but I'm also bothered by the fact that reading that game feels like staring into zombie eyes. They brush away so much shit they should really write about because "it's a gacha game with a self insert lol"

They never adress how the fuck it's possible that guda and mashu aren't actively fucking for example, after all this time. Even mahoyo had a line about how autist-king soujuurou is bothered by living alone in a house with two attractive teenage girls. In FGO it feels all of the characters only exist when they're onscreen, and then they just shift out of existence. The singularities/lostbelts are only a tiny fraction of the actual timeline, and yet it feels like nothing else exists. I literally don't even know what the fuck guda/mash/the servants supposedly do all day.

Yep, everything about it is so lifeless, it just feels disconnected and low effort all around. A lot of it is cause of the awful medium, mobage were not meant to tell a story with endearing characters, much less a long term one that spans years.
I believe that they could do better with adapting a story to a gacha game now that they have this experience, but that's still not what I want at all. In a real Nasu work you're always following the protagonist closely, living with their thoughts, facing every day's challenges with them, getting used to their routine, and witnessing their interactions with other characters, It's not left as "background" shit or fanfic bait. FGO just fails at being a proper main TM work on so many levels.

now imagine:

a Fate based video game with a more fleshed out MonHun/Witcher combat system where you play as a Servant in a HGW.
The enemy servants and masters are randomly generated each time, and you fight them in a gauntlet style match every round within a small city.
Of course there's so much more potential in it than that.

And so what do we get:

Then they removed all the crazy parts for the playable unit you can summon and said "this isn't the lion king but she possibly could have turned into one." She's pretty bland and generic but not really that offensive. I've been putting off reading KnK for years now, but in short, is it better to watch the movies before reading the LNs, or read the LNs first? One of my friends was trying to suggest the movie route, but I'm not sure. For what it's worth, I've already read all of the (translated, because I'm eop) vns.

>> No.21876322

>>21876093
Since you're EOP like me, you're much better off watching the movies. The fan translation is bad. Here's stuff the translator said on the website for some proof (https://emptyboundaries.wordpress.com/2011/07/25/kara-no-kyokai-translations-2/))

>I’ve had a doozy of a time translating this, but it was very fun all the way. The first thing you’ll notice about it is that the translation is very…well, loose might be a word you could use. Obviously, English and Japanese are two very unrelated and different languages, and translating (or localizing, if you prefer) one to the other will necessarily require no small amount of rewriting. There is a time and place for stiff, strict, and exact translation, but written prose is—in my opinion—certainly not that place.

Basically, fan fiction. Instead of translating it as it is, he fluffs it up so a short sentence becomes a whole fucking paragraph.

>I know that a lot of in-universe terms re-occur in these other works, and that over the years, a lot of these terms have been translated—either by fans or in an official capacity. While I’m familiar with a number of renditions of these terms, I have, for one reason or another, ended up not using much of them. A lot of it has to do with a lot of them not really flying off the text so well, and so I regrettably had to change them. Please note, I don’t bear any ill will towards those other translators who have put their own stamp on Nasu’s creation, nor the fans who have painstakingly charted the details of this universe. It’s just that I thought that, for the purposes of Kara no Kyōkai‘s translation at least, some of these terms would not serve.

And this is squandering the author's intention, even with him being a hack, Kara no Kyoukai doesn't deserve this.

So, watch the movies. If you really want to read a subpar translation, then do it after watching them. And if you wanna go next level, learn Japanese (like I'm trying to do) and read the original.

>> No.21878740

>>21876322
None of this is evidence of the translation being "bad." ALL translation is merely the translator's personal interpretation of the original text, and if you have a problem with this you need to learn Japanese and stop bitching. There is no such thing as "translating as it is." If there were, classic works of literature wouldn't be translated and re-translated dozens of times, with each offering a slightly different interpretation of the text. It is literally impossible for there to be a "definitive" translation of a work of literature.

>> No.21878773

>>21878740
Not using agreed upon translations for "technical" terms (Arcane vs Mystic, the Art vs Magecraft, Deterrent vs Counter, Consensus vs Common Sense) is minor at best.
Of course, that's the lesser of Coke's sins.
I recommend you take a look at the "Kara no Kyoukai translated" thread on BL, some people posted comparisons there.
He made some stuff up, changed stuff that didn't need changing, put his head canon on, chose different comparisons to the ones the narrator uses, etc.
Like if you just want to read KnK, do it.
It's not lile anyone will ever translate it anyway.

>learn Japanese and stop bitching
Wow, so I'm not allowed to criticize when I don't know Japanese? Fuck the translation community then. Who needs translation when we could just learn Japanese, am I right?

>There is no such thing as "translating as it is."

Oof. I never said that. A literal translation sucks. But there's enough liberty you can take to where it doesn't mean close to what the original text meant and is the translator's original sentence. That's what I mean by fan fiction. And I have to mention that I was just giving this guy EXACTLY what's written on the website by Coke himself. Coke ADMITS to doing this. It's much easier showing him this rather than going back through the text and find examples (some dude on Reddit already did that, go find the thread).

>classic works of literature wouldn't be translated and re-translated dozens of times, with each offering a slightly different interpretation of the text.

Completely irrelevant. Those are official. This is not. There is only one English FAN translation of KnK. Classic works have multiple OFFICIAL translations.

>It is literally impossible for there to be a "definitive" translation of a work of literature.

Straw man. Never said anything about definitive translations.

It's a very long answer.
Why did she become a wanderer?
Why did she feel a bond with Shiki?
How did her overall being change how it did from young to old?
The best fit to all these questions is that she lost those dear to her, and so she needed to search for greater meaning to life.
That is roughly how I see it.

Anyway, I never thought of it that way but I guess it makes sense. I remember thinking that Aoko sounded somewhat depressed in MB even before playing Mahoyo.
And her whole "life is precious" and bondless wandering shtick in Tsuki makes sense if we look at it that way.

Nasu himself said the events aren't actually canon:
>The writers in charge of events are free to write as they will and make characters reappear, but those are just “Ifs”, alternate developments where “this might have happened”. Although they may never be seen ever again for life in a certain person’s Chaldea, that might not be the case in another person’s Chaldea.
It's nebulous "it could have happened" as far as those players choose to, but he won't acknowledge them in the main story other than meme references. Look at the time temple, when the event shit appears is explicitely stated that you've exhausted your actual allies. The character quests are not events as they can be obtained in the rare prism shop, and the only exception it seems to be Dantes' Prison Tower event which is mostly a long character quest also obtainable and linked with the plot.

You can have random shit happen in events because Nasu doesn't consider them as part of the main timeline. Lion King appearing isn't weird at all knowing this.

How much does Nasu even do for FGO? I don't think he gives a shit.

>> No.21879782

>>21879758
>Nasu takes care of the overall plot, and hands the material regarding what should be done in each chapter as well as the plotlines that should be covered to the other writers. After that, the writers will work on their Lostbelts and if Nasu thinks there’s no problems then he’ll leave it entirely to them. Once they’re done, he’ll go through their completed script and add plot details he thinks might be necessary for the overall story. He tries to make the words and actions of the characters consistent not just within the particular Lostbelt, but also in Part 2 as a whole.
>As a writer, he’ll write his own assigned scenarios and also looks at how things come together as a whole, edit the text for all scenarios, and manage the Servant character backgrounds. He’ll read the background for the Servants written by the other writers and tweak them if necessary to match with the feel of FGO. But event scenarios are an exception, there he lets the writers write what they excel at so outside of the plot itself he doesn’t make any changes, though there are exceptions.
>For example, a certain writer A-san is handling 20 Servants. But Servants that they aren’t in charge of also appear, so the quality of that part would drop no matter what. This is the point where Nasu, who’s in charge of all the Servants would help to make the writing better. Nasu also takes care of Mashu, Gordolf, and all the Chaldea team’s dialogue.
>If they were to break it down, for the main scenarios the text would be 30% Nasu, 70% other writers, while in events it would be 80% other writers, 20% Nasu. They have to write about 500 kb of text (250,000 letters) every month. The workload when it comes to text is pretty standard for professional work but there are other things they need to do too. As he said in the 3rd anniversary interview, he didn’t think he’d have to work this much. He wants a rest.
>Nasu: “But right now I have my reliable health buddy, the Nintendo Switch game “Fit Boxing” which I train on every month, so my body is fine. Everything can be solved with muscles”.
For both events and main story, the overall plots are usually Nasu's like Summer 2018 and Summer 2019. Last year Nasu & other writers went to Hawaii and Nasu also went to Las Vegas this time too, and sometimes event gameplay/grinding gimmick are also from Typemoon side (e.g. Summer 2018)
>Nasu came up with the idea that it would take place in Hawaii, and Type Moon’s Azanashi came up with the game-like loop elements, and they planned the structure of the event together. They next called in the writers and planned out the finer details, planned the storyline, conducted a check, and then commenced writing the scenario. Once the writing was done, Nasu did a final check before it was handed to the Delight Works planner.
>This year’s summer event is in Las Vegas, but unlike the previous trip where everyone went, this time he went alone. It’s hard to convey the atmosphere of Vegas to the writing team so he’s helping where he can with their writing.

I completely agree lol, most translations are bad, even the best of them. This is exactly why I learned Japanese myself. Even Jay Rubin, the acclaimed translator of Murakami, says that "95% of the time, you are reading me, not Murakami." Translations are just their own thing.

I haven't read the novels but I'm confused about Rail Zeppelin. Does Rita appear in it as a character or is she just referenced? I'm enjoying the show regardless but I don't get this part too much. Also the forest of Einnashe is part of the story or something?

>> No.21889700

>>21888909
The answer is that Roa really wasn't perma killed by Dantes and that was just headcanon being spread for power level shitposting by FGOfags.
It's left ambiguous.

>> No.21889721

>>21889700
Roa being killed has more implications than powerlevels. It's also the easiest way of explaining why the events of Tsukihime don't happen in Fate worlds. Remember that Ciel has super affinity for magical stuff anyway which is why Roa picked her as a host in the first place. The Church can just pick her up regardless.

>> No.21889821

>>21889613
She made the Rail Zepellin, and when people talk about a Mystic Eyes Collector, it's her.
However she doesn't hang out in the Rail Zepellin after Touko and Lugh wrecked her shit in the 80s.
Because Touko made them lose her Rita's patronage the employees hate her and have a kill on sigh policy regarding Touko.
The Forest proper is mentioned but they pass through another bloodsucking demonic forest tho.

Roa choosing Elesia as a host shows that she always had high potential for magic etc. It'll just come down to how Elesia got in touch with magecraft

>>21889721
No anon, the events of Tsuki not happening in Fate has waaaaay more widespread reasons than just Roa. All of the DAA are pretty drastically different, Nrvnqsr isn't working for Trhvm to hunt down Arc, vampires in general are much weaker... it's a bunch of different factors that converge in different events.
What we still don't know is what actually causes the different between Fateshit and Tsuki, and what event caused the death of Gransurg Blackmore in Fate. But this headcanon about Roa was only spread around for shitposting.

>>21889821
Thank you for clarifying anon, shame we're not getting any actual Rita or Einnashe appearances, that's a tad disappointing. I'm glad the whole Rail Zeppelin thing got expanded from Mahoyo though.

On the topic of Roa vs Dantes
>Chapter 9 (1): Tarantella finishes sucking Concetta dry just as Edmond arrives. Edmond realises that he’s a vampire. Tarantella says that he’s not a vampire, and reveals his true name as Mikhael Roa Balldamnjohn.
>Faria narrates about dead apostles and Roa, and says that he wasn’t able to tell Edmond about this because Roa put a curse on him. Faria also mentions that he left Edmond “the treasure of darkness”, he stole from the church, that would one day help Edmond out when he one day faces a non-human enemy that he would lose to- The treasure of Monte Cristo, which has the power to remake a person.
>Edmond laughs and says it doesn’t matter what Roa is, and that he, and not Roa, represents god’s will, and starts burning with black fire. He immediately understands how it works, and how it’s a weapon for him to burn his enemies, and quotes the bible saying “vengeance is mine”. Roa recognises the black fire as the Monte Cristo Mythology, a legend hidden in the mountain of Christ, the despair of those without god, the flames of hell and the void, power equal to that from the age of mythology, which forces a magic circuit and magic crest into the user.

>Chapter 9 (2): Edmond tells him to shut up and blasts him through the hotel’s wall. Roa runs, Edmond flies after him, and they fight in the air. Roa uses the moves of multiple reincarnations, including the curses of the seventh and the barriers of the fourth. Edmond just gets madder and calls upon the fire of vengeance to eat his soul and turn to a black flame, breaking the barrier imprisoning him, and he grabs and burns Roa while laughing, declaring that they’ll just have to see whose soul is incinerated first. Roa doesn’t believe that there’s such a thing as a fire that can burn souls, but Edmond says that this fire can. Roa can’t heal and Edmond asks him to just try and pretend to be the messiah in front of god again. Roa says “bakana bakana bakana bakana bakana bakanaaaa” and starts to say that he can just reincarnate even if his body is destroyed, but is cut off when Edmond laughs at him and spouts his victory lines from FGO.

>Chapter 10: By the time he realises it, Edmond is standing alone. Nothing is left of Roa but cinders. He feels something vanishing from his body, and believes that that’s the treasure of Monte Cristo, and realises that he was saved by Faria again. His body will never be enveloped in black flames again, not unless he’s someday reborn as something as inhuman as a vampire. He prays for Concetta to watch over his vengeance. He heads for the cathedral and is stopped by a guard, who demands to know who he is. He laughs and says that the Count of Monte Cristo has come for the cardinal.
This is just a summary, but could anyone that know JP clarify that if Roa was perma killed or not ? The audio of this Drama CD is still on bilibili and/or youtube as far as i remember.

can somebody clarify something for me?

the entire servant system doesn't exist in the tsukihime timeline due to whatever factors right? how the fuck did that timeline ever get past Sefar? am I supposed to believe servants were actually a thing until a certain point in time, or that the planet just didn't give a fuck and summoned an holy sword user regardless? Obviously the real answer is that all that bullshit wasn't even in nasu's mind back when he wrote tsukihime, but it's literally impossible for most of the TM typelines to exist in the state they're in without Sefar doing cleanup, so what the fuck?

It doesn't say, but with the obvious implication being an excaliblast it's either a servant or they straight up pulled someone from the future and then presumably but them back.

>> No.21891250

>>21891056
Who said I'm butthurt about it? Visual novels are pretty much dead on the PC. There hasn't been a huge release insofar as PC exclusive VNs are concerned outside of moege, and many of the old establishing companies are going out of business. In addition to this, I very much doubt that Tsukihime R -- if it comes out at all -- will be a traditional visual novel. Therefore I think it likely that it won’t be a release targeted at the PC.

FSN is getting rereleased on the PC because, well, where else would they rerelease it? The Vita is dead. The PS4 and Switch are options, but this seems to be a lazy release regardless, it isn't getting HD assets at all, and sub-720p assets on the Switch or PS4 isn’t going to fly.
