Problem is, when playing against human players (and not just in fightan games, in pretty much everything) I get plenty of the "get the shit beaten out of you" part, and not so much of the "improving as a result" part. And as a result, pretty much none of the "having fun" part.

If you want to be really good, there's nothing to do but bite the bullet and learn all the comboan.

If you just want to be good enough to play against people with a decent chance of winning, you can fake it using strategy and pacing.
The basic idea is:

- And, finally: Play fighting games a lot. Most skill in one does not translate directly to others, but a lot of the basics do carry across.

You're going to need a different mindset. Accept that you suck and that everyone will pound you into the ground. Just take it as a matter of fact that you WILL lose any fight you enter. From there, don't get frustrated in fights where you do. Learning combos is necessary, but the real game lies in how to even get a hit in on your opponent, and nothing but experience will help you with that. Match videos of your character may help as well. While it sounds kinda dumb, imitating their movements, even if you don't know why they do the things they do, can be really helpful.

Advice might be good against new players... but honestly it's kind of silly. Rushing the opponent and using every move you can without knowing any combos doesn't really lead to decent damage. All I can really say is find someone who will play you 50 matches a day, and you can begin experimenting with your moveset to see what gimmicks you may have.

Don't listen to this advice.

- Know your character's normals/clash/startup/active frames/meaties. Experience will largely teach you this.
- Experience will teach you YOMI. When to block, dodge, shield, reversal, use certain attacks, fuck your opponent by reading his every move. Otherwise, lern 2 block. If your opponent is doing the same shit all day long (like wakeup reversal), punish them for it. It'll shake them up a little bit.
- Knowing all BNBs (you're lucky MB doesn't really have many chara specific bnbs) is a given. You should be able to maximize damage per poke at 100% consistency. If you don't you're losing out on serious damage. Seriously mb bnbs aside from like arc/vakiha are so easy its stupid. In before stupid arguments like derp nanaya 623c 2a 236a 623c loop. GJ zansatsu you pulled that against me once.
- Know blockstrings/cancelling. This keeps you in +frames and keeps your opponent blocking so you can keep making more attempts at breaking his guard. When you finally break his guard you should be able to capitalize by lol hitconfirming into a bnb or maxing out damage however. Preferably into knockdown into okizeme.

Maybe on their day1 of MB. They don't play like that. Even assuming they fuck up execution which is rare they wouldn't attempt gimped combos. The player level is obviously low since they don't even go for certain combos that don't even require that tight of execution.
