/jp/ - Otaku Culture

21809103 No.21809103 [Reply] [Original]

Recent days have shown that big centralized otaku media archives, although convenient, are a risk. If the server goes down some data may be lost forever. Alternatives built on peer-to-peer technology would be useful. Perhaps otaku media preservation has a future with them. Let's see how far we are from that future.

I've made an experiment to preserve original /jp/ content as well as to test the viability of the P2P Dat protocol for sharing otaku media. It's a Dat site where you can download /jp/'s original visual novels. Namely,
- Anon's Nice Day
- The Dandelion Girl (v1.1 + remake)
- /jp/ Manor
- Rita Please Respond
These are all the /jp/ visual novels that I have. I didn't include Uncle Mugen's work, at least for now. If you know others, please tell me. (inb4 KS.)

To access the VN archive you can download the Beaker Browser from https://beakerbrowser.com/.. I'll post a screenshot of what the site looks like in the thread. You can also use the command line Dat client. The client seems solid, but the browser is still buggy and sometimes can't find any peers seeding the site. If the browser doesn't work for you, try the client or use https://datbase.org as a proxy (but then you can't seed). Please download and seed the site. It's around 250 MB of /jp/ OC.

Why Dat? First of all, its browser can create and publish "Dat sites" like Netscape Navigator did websites in the old days. The average anon who knows HTML should be able to use it to create a site. Another nice thing about Dat compared to IPFS or BitTorrent is that you can add new content to an existing site more easily. This would be an important feature for a constantly updated media archive.

I would be. I have some, but maybe there is stuff I am missing. If it's only a couple of gigs, I'll seed your dat for a while. I don't know how well the creation of larger dats works in Beaker, though.
>most anons would probably look for is backups of doujins and other "rare" items
I think so, too. I chose the /jp/ VNs because it's a good starter package in terms of size, and you have to dig for some of them.

At that scale bandwidth would be a larger concern because most of the hundreds of gigabytes of content would need to be completely replaced multiple times per day. It isn't something a consumer Internet connection can handle. No real P2P imageboard would operate like that, though. It would have to let you choose what you wanted to store with thread-level granularity. Board-level could be acceptable for textboards, but not imageboards. A full copy of /jp/ takes up at least 15 threads/page * 10 pages * 100 images/thread (an average I pulled out of my ass) * 1 megabyte/image (another average) = 15000 megabytes.

He is certainly ambitious. But maybe, just maybe, he is a herald of the coming final era of /jp/. Once 4chan at last shuts down for good we will each sit down, focus our NEET energies like a laser and make a visual novel with all we've learned. Our works will get banned in several countries, translated into Japanese by adoring fans and adapted into anime by excited rouge directors with complete disregard for international copyright law. The /jp/ dream will never have come true, but a /jp/ dream will.

Does this thing support dynamic website like users can post or upload things? If not then it won't be a sadpanda replacement. You are not going to have only one person supplying all these contents.

>> No.21855530

>>21854476
It doesn't support users uploading files directly to your Dat. There is going to be support for multiple write keys, but that's more for having several admins. You don't give out keys to users you don't trust with the entire contents of your site.

However, you wouldn't do it like that anyway. My understanding of Dat and Beaker is somewhere between basic and intermediate, but I think the correct way to make a Sad Panda clone with them is different. First, you create the main Dat site that has three features. They are a gallery editor, a gallery viewer and a gallery list/search form. The editor allows users to create their own gallery with standard metadata (creator name, circle, tags...) that your viewer understands and to publish it as a separate dat. A user creates this gallery and submits the link to you through another channel like an imageboard, IRC or IM. If you like it, you either add the link directly to your list (and then every gallery is controlled by the submitter) or you make a copy of the dat and put a link to that copy there (then every gallery is controlled by you). Once you've done that, users are able to find it and view it with the viewer. If somebody takes down your communications channel, the content will still stay up.

You can also handle submissions in a more sophisticated automatic way and have user tagging, comments, etc. through centralized but theoretically interchangeable servers that your Dat gallery editor/viewer talks to. You can read about how that is supposed to work in https://pfrazee.hashbase.io/blog/dat-and-servers.. Again, it is possible to design things in such way that taking down the servers only disables these features or makes everything read-only until someone puts up a replacement server.
