Every girl in Imouto no Okagede Motesugite Yabai was best girl. Still the best of the best girls was the imouto. The only girl in Yome Sagashi ga Hakadorisugite Yabai I didn't like was the classmate you meet on the roof and although all the sisters weren't perfect they were at least cute. Again, the best route by far was the imouto.

Akikuru was already unreadable for me, while I also felt that Natsukuru was worse than Harukuru. I feel like he tries way too hard to be special and fucks up as a result. For example, Natsukuru has many signs that it's going to be like Harukuru, but then nothing actually matters and it's just some random thing, while the story is something else. Aka a gigantic red herring that made most of the game feel rather irrelevant.
In Akikuru he then switched between "comedy" and serious stuff every 2 minutes making neither really work. Add to that not particularly good sci-fi. I actually couldn't even play the game for more than one hour though, so who knows, maybe it gets better. The beginning felt beyond awful to me though.

Feels really like he tries too hard to prove himself. But I haven't tried his newest two games yet.

Aside from one VN I can’t think of any other examples of real netori. Real netori is where the girl is in a loving relationship with her partner but who is stolen by the protagonist. What you get is the girl in one-sided / bad relationship so while the protag technically steals her in reality it wasn’t a real couple to begin with.

Aside from that there’s mindbreaks but that’s its own genre.

I haven't looked in this thread in like half a year, but are edgy plotge still dead for the foreseeable future or is there something in the pipelines? I miss my hotblooded robots/armor and timeloops to be honest.

Taking a look at EGS and archives, Sakura, moyu seems well received so I guess I'll give it a try.

Also, is getting VNs to work smoothly on VMs a futile effort? I was trying to get 抜きゲーみたいな島に住んでる貧乳はどうすりゃいいですか? to work on my laptop with linux (mint) in a VM, but video seemed to get fucked up and the overall game didn't seem very smooth.

Beware that Sakura, Moyu has some really bad pacing problems. The story and presentation itself is rather unique and might be good enough to make up for that depending on your tastes, it's a rather polarizing game that some people love to bits and others find boring. Give it a try and if the first route doesn't make you want to kill yourself you'll probably find it worthwhile.

Guys I just browsed VNDB going through my annual scan of developers I liked. I think the era of quality VNs are over, year and after its just moeshit:

1. Age. They don't appear to make games anymore.
2. Xuse. I actually liked Kami-sama no Game (and it got me hooked on the source web novel) but nothing until Spirit of Eternity Sword comes out.
3. AkabeSoft (and sub-brands). After Looseboy's last game years ago, jack shit. Just loads of moe filth.
4. Nitroplus. Waiting for the next Muramasa I guess means I'm going to wait forever.
5. Candy Soft / Minato. Tsukiss after the first one sucks and there hasn't been a new Majikoi in years.

If I want moe garbage I'm set for life. Drama, edge, thrills, etc -- hardly anything. Even good sci-fi / technothrillers, there's fuck all. Very off-putting and depressing.

The game is extremely good of course, Setoguchi's prose is a pleasure to read and there's a strong thematic philosophy underlying the narrative, but despite this I was somewhat dissatisfied with the work. It suffers significantly from the interwoven scenes by inferior side writers, which detract from the overall flow of Setoguchi's scenario, and the route structure, which while an interesting experiment in multiple perspectives does result in a level of repetition and retracing the same plot that negatively affects the reader's experience.

Nevertheless, Setoguchi's prose is still undoubtedly top-class, and one can see many glimpses of his genius that will become expanded upon in later works, one can draw parallels between the symbolic themes the characters represent and that of later works, and hence once one has indulged in Setoguchi's incomparably exquisite masterpieces such as Kira Kira and Swan Song, it is indeed highly recommended to experience Carnival too to gain the greater level of understanding into his growth as a philosophical scenarioist.

The subjective POV was used quite nicely to control the information that the player gets at a certain point. My feelings went from Risa is an 裏切り者 to lmao best girl ever. Might have even shed some tears, dunno.

A girl was teaching me French at the time I was reading this, and she and the novel both referenced the "cadavre exquis" (贅沢な屍 in CARNIVAL). She said she appreciated feedback so I told her how her lessons made me catch this reference in this "visual novel". She was very happy and said she just loves it when her students actually learn something from what she's trying to say during lessons. She had us do some writing assignments in French and I wrote some bawdy stuff with inverted nipples and so on. She told me I had a gift for writing and that I should definitely continue. (She's not the first one to tell me that.) I thought she liked me so I asked her out to coffee, but she said "well, I'm really busy atm, but maybe in September", so in September I messaged her "so how about that coffee", and she never replied, nor has she seen the message. Outside of reading up on general history (particularly 幕府 stuff), you can check out Hanachirasu if you haven't already. Nitro+ actually developed Hanachirasu specifically to get people used to Narahara's writing style before releasing Muramasa. (In Hanachirasu he also explains some principles of sword fighting that don't get repeated in Muramasa with the same amount of detail.) You can also watch some 時代劇 to get used to the type of terminology you'll be encountering.

Ultimately though (making sure not to give off the wrong idea here), there's no harm in researching this stuff as you read Muramasa, when the politics/history gets heavy it can be hard to follow along without this background knowledge but researching terms as they come up (or just deriving understanding from the context of the scene/Narahara's own explanations/etc) is totally fine. It's a game where preparation is valuable and will enhance your understanding, but it's not something to stress too much over. You'll have a good time either way.

Definitely recommend reading Hanachirasu first though. It's short enough to finish in a single setting and is good by its own merits.

Nagomi and Sunao because the latter was a rather late addition, so making an impression of her is a bit hard but seems kinda nice since she fits my tastes physically and personality-wise. the latter on the other hand had like 15 lines of dialogue in the common route.Impressions will probably change once I'm reading their routes except for kani, since i'm not reading it But this vn is really a blast from the past, so many Tsunderes, a relic of a bygone age I suppose.

It may as well be, you can do 英雄編 (Ichijou) and 復讐編 (Kanae) in either order, but 魔王編 (Chachamaru/Muramasa) is always third and naturally the common route always comes first. So you have like a 25 hour common route, two 8-ish hour routes in the middle, then a 16 hour long-ish true route. It's as close to linear as you can be without quite making it there.

I dont see the issue, you have VNs that sometimes change the POV. With Persona what helped is that the protag is nothing more than the player vehicle rather than a character which is what VN protags are since no matter how bland a personality they make it is still one (Most of the time an annoying one too).
