Beginner's perspective here. Was looking over both guides when I decided on the Tae Kim one. I was able to read the entire beginner section on a lazy day and read the rest on a plane flight with nothing else to do. Watching videos for something I can quickly just read about seems like a huge waste of time. I was able to jump into reading yotsuba faster with tae kim under my belt (plus kinda lazily did a bunch of words from VN Core which kinda helped me with parsing out sentences into chunks rather than continuous streams of kana)

I never did RTK. I do often have to reread lines if I don't quite catch their meaning on the first try. I sometimes mispronounce stuff. Most of what I read are moege or slice of life/harem LNs.
