Core 6k doesn't suck, neither does core 10k, and it's actually really good for mining.

If you find a word while mining and want to add a card of it, it probably already exists in core 6k/10k. So you can simple go grab the pre-made card and re-schedule it with 2 clicks.

The only problem with the existing core 10k decks is they all look like fucking ass. Seriously, they are so ugly and the example pictures are garbage too. But that's something you can easily fix with some formatting. I have one of the most sleek and elegant 10k decks without a bunch of extra bullshit information you'll never use.

There are basically 2 versions of the core 10k deck that can be found online. One of them is the yellow bullshit that I just posted. The bottom of the cards are filled with a bunch of bullshit that's never gonna help you with anything, the pictures are either low res or don't make any sense, and it's just gross to look at.

The version you're talking about is less ugly but still pretty bare bones. Also the audio is super fucked when you get into the latter half of it, I think the guy just ran everything through TTS. When we are talking about core 10k, we are talking about the extra 4k cards not included in 6k. And those last 4k cards are the real shitty ones.

not going to wait on getting another response anymore desu this is too pointless
you just assumed for no reason whatsoever that i believe that people should avoid anki just because i argued with you about your shitty time-wasting card format
you cannot simultaneously argue that doing a 10k card deck will let you "figure out how to speak nip after all that" while also admitting that anki will not cause you to learn japanese
you're rehashing age-old arguments that have long been settled without realizing it because you're new here and lack foundational community wisdom that most everyone else here has

Listening is much harder than anything else since it is a real time event, and reading is only hard because of the time limit. You could be equally skilled in all sections and still your listening / reading score would be lower than the rest. It's just the nature of the test.

that doesn't mean you couldn't understand that particular 分野 of japanese (which to most native adults would probably be considered more "normal" than stuff from otaku media anyway). and decoding text due to grammar and vocab knowledge is literally what comprehension is. reading fluency is just a matter of how automatically you can do that, and spoken fluency is how automatically you can produce it yourself.

A lot of those kanji are words in Japanese, Chinese and Korean. Although a lot is relative since 300 single kanji words is still 10% of kanji you want to learn to be literate, only 1% where you need 30,000 words to approach an average native. Speaking of enjoyment, I had a eureka moment today when watching Flying Witch on Crunchyroll. I was just watching it normally with English subtitles and I wanted to do a little bit of active immersion so I listened deeply to the Japanese words more than looking at the English subtitles. The English subtitles helped me understand what they were saying in the moment, but I was able to hear the characters...natively. I think that analyzing and translating sentences written by native speakers, comparing them to your native language, etc... actually gives you a grasp of the language patterns and the most common words, and you can guess meaning from context.
Flashcards are sterile, limiting, repetitive drills that teach you nothing beyond what's written on them.
They are useful for testing your knowledge, not learning. After studying a technical book, making flashcards about specific, challenging topics to check which ones I should revise would help me remember, but definitely not learn.

Japanese read words wrong too btw. It comes with the territory of having a gigantic vocabulary. If you know your 40k and read a word wrong here and there it's not the end of the world (not excusing parsing errors like 一番はやい but like someone accidentally reading 焦点 as しゅうてん which Japanese do).
You have better things to worry about like reading your next book or having fun than sperging out about reading every single word properly.
That's only once you get up to your 40k btw, you still have to learn properly along the way.

>little kids don't use that when they're learning their native language
this argument is so, so bad. kids go to school and are regularly tested on many aspects of their language including kanji, word readings, grammar and comprehension. that's spaced repetition (likely less efficient than anki, but with the same goals).
>and it only takes them like 12 years to reach an adult standard of fluency
"ONLY"? 12 years of virtually nonstop input is a short amount of time to you? cutting their input and the things they're forced to learn in school by half (to equal what the average native can reasonably spend) would mean 24 years.

I wouldn't go as far as saying that Anki is useless. Unless you're unironically autistic, or just learn better when you have a structured schedule, you may get better results out of it.
I do believe that for most people dealing with stuff made by natives is more engaging than rote learning. The worst thing is learning a language on textbooks, and then speaking like one, because you never picked up on the nuances native speakers use in language.

The downside to my proposed method is that you need an experienced language partner to give you guidance and correct translations, ideally a native speaker. There's plenty on language exchange apps, but Japanese people are busy as fuck, and there's the issue of timezones too. Studying with Anki is something that you can do on your own.

>they didn't get trapped reviewing old stuff they already know
As a newbie, what held me back was:
1) Presenting readings out of context: telling me that 四 can be read as both よん and し is neat, but when do I use which?
2) The stuff that wouldn't stick, but I would still be forced to sludge through every time.

One of the first thing Anki threw at me was ordinal numbers (first, second, third...), and I was just having a hard time remembering them. I eventually had to make a text file, and would re-read that before a session, but it felt like a chore, and that I wasn't actually "learning a language", but just "memorizing words". See the picture in >>21729276 to get what I mean.
I'd say the fact that I had to write down words and revise them so I wouldn't waste time getting them wrong over and over during a session, proves that Anki isn't as good for learning, as it is for testing your existing knowledge once you have some confidence in your knowledge.
>inb4 someone will tell me there's something you can do about this, but Anki's options are daunting and make me feel like a brainlet.

What if people who shill Anki as something that's indispensable are the ones who spent too much time using it to give up, and feel the need to defend their poor choices?

Check the Library.

There are sites out there like raw-zip and manga-zone, but they upload everything to dodgy as fuck filehosts with download speeds right out of the 1990s and a limit of one download per X hours (often the links have been DMCA'd anyway). Worst of all, the filehosts in question force you to enable javascript if you want to download anything, and doing so activates a whole range of obnoxious and probably malicious advertisements (e.g. links which take up the entire web page, blocking the download link, which won't disappear until you've clicked them, taking you to some even dodgier website than the filehost itself). You're as likely to come away with a virus as you are the manga you were looking for.

I also think Anki has uses, but I'm not convinced on the use when it comes to learning a language.
People get it in their heads that they will never learn a word like "lice" or something because it doesn't show up enough in their porn games. And so they MUST use Anki. Without even trying to use their brain.
But then there is the fact that people lapse on their Anki reviews when the intervals grow too large because their brain doesn't actually have a connection to the word they are trying to not forget in the first place. Doing a front-back flashcard is not a strong connection when it comes to actually acquiring vocabulary.
Counter arguments to this are usually "but you're not doing flashcards the right way" or "only put stuff into Anki that you already know" but still look at their graphs and they will have lapses on cards which goes against what they argue.

I was going to say the same thing, but then I realized that shitposting and arguing over trivial matters is addicting.

More seriously, I tried reading a fan-translated LN once, and I was appalled by how poorly it was written, it was as if those people had never opened a book in their life. I stopped being a bookworm in my early teens, but I swear, Wattpad-tier writing should be punished with crucifixion.
As I've said before, I'm a newbie, so I have no way to tell if the original Japanese text is as bad, but I highly doubt it would be if those works get published and sold.
>implying LNs aren't called "light novels" for a reason
>costanza.jpg
So I figured I'd try translating one on my own, to see if I could do a better job. I tried asking some Japanese people on a language exchange site to see if anyone wanted to tutor me so they could learn English too, but no one replied. What about here, would anyone be interested in collaborating to tranlate stuff?

This is because the ancient Japanese and Chinese had fought dragons for centuries and so their scholars devised methods of weaving anti-reptilian obstacles into the foundations of their languages. And so the modern day ancestors of the dragons, the jews, have so much difficulty when they try to learn Japanese. This is why jewish people write all of the books and methods for how to force their minds to be able to process kanji. Normal non-reptilian people don't need to go through RTK or Kanji Damage because the ancient warding effects of kanji don't apply to pure humans and they have no need to pound in millions of individual readings into their minds.
