Like I said I'm really fast at reading if there are no words I don't know. I'll always more likely understand a spoken sentence without issues than a written one where any common word might trip me up, you know either not recognize a word i know in kanji because I last saw it in text 6 months ago on anki or i know the word and the meaning but i'm not sure about the reading so i might not be able to read the word out loud and if someone had read it out loud first i wouldn't have thought that any of the words were words i wouldn't have recognized in text because I'm used to hearing them.

I probably read 200-300 hours in the last year but watched/listened to raws and podcasts for 700-1000 hours. I read less than an hour a day on average and watch or listen 3-4, often up to 6 hours per day

Reading without subvocalizing, not worrying about the reading (you're not vocalizing it anyway) i can read very fast
RTK helps with that, you don't need to process words individually because you can read the meaning of a string of kanji like you can read the meaning of alphabet words without vocalizing it.

Subvocalization is exactly whatever awareness of word pronunciations and prosody you automatically experience when reading. If you do not subvocalize, then you do not map out pronunciations and prosody, and you do not properly understand how clauses connect or in what locations emphasis lies. If you are literate, you subvocalize. The only things that can block subvocalization are not knowing the language, not knowing how words are read, skimming, and being deeply autistic. If you do not subvocalize, and you are otherwise normal, then you're skipping words you don't know or you're skimming. There's nothing wrong with skimming, but you can't act like people who read properly and experience subvocalization as a result are doing it wrong, because if anyone is doing it wrong it's you. Not that you're actually doing it wrong, just, if you decide that anyone is, it's you, not them.

Japanese people skip words they don't know how to read in kanji like 祠 or 銅鑼 even if they actually know the word in the spoken language cuz it doesn't matter cuz they know Japanese.
You're a jsl so it matters because you don't know what a native with your personality would be expected to read so you just have to look up everything you don't know how to read, ideally you should figure out how a native would actually intonate it in context too but that's often too hard to find out if it's unvoiced narration.

Which is intentional and I intend to start reading more because I'm at a level where reading isn't premature anymore and won't cripple my listening. It does help after your listening ability is up to a certain point, same goes for reading. Listening makes reading easier, and listening makes reading easier. With listening your reading flows better, atleast in my case. I noticed that listening gains shouldn't be ignored. My pronounciation in my head fixed itself after I started listening, I was able to read faster and smoother while subvocalizing. While learning new vocabulary in reading helps in picking it up in listening.

man are you serious? maybe if i spent like 10 minutes trying to remember all the shows i watched i could list them to add credibility but i don't consider it that much of a stretch. i did actively watch that much white noise because i kept being reassured it was the key to understanding more. but the reality is that i make more progress when i read the subtitle then repeat a single sentence like 10 times, then move onto the next line, rinse and repeat. i can use VNs this way too, but then i can't enjoy the story as much because i'm pausing for like 2 minutes per line trying to hear everything.

so that process is boring as fuck. basically it's all boring as fuck for a long time until you don't suck which is probably gonna take me 600+ fucking hours so i can at least catch all the basic SoL shit.

well it's 100% true so it's not about how anyone feels. however it depends on the material. the reason this doesn't apply to vocab decks as much is that (if you're doing it the DJT or AJATT way) you mine as you read and preferably you're mining frequent words so you're getting constant exposure to them. you're not necessarily gonna expose yourself to 2200 of the RTK kanji in a few months, but it depends on how many hours a day you read and what material you read. there's plenty of VNs and LNs for example that only have like 1700 kanji and it can take people a couple months to get through one. and you're not necessarily going to mine every single word with a unique kanji.
