That's completely normal. The typical Japanese native caps out at 600.
>but can comprehend however fast people speak, which is definitely quicker than that
Japanese people speak at something like 7 syllables per second, which is something like 400 syllables per minute. Keep in mind that many Japanese characters are multisyllabic, so the number of characters of text this covers is lower. It's not as big of a gap as you think it is. People read faster than they speak in their native languages. It's only writing and typing that are slower.

I probably read 200-300 hours in the last year but watched/listened to raws and podcasts for 700-1000 hours. I read less than an hour a day on average and watch or listen 3-4, often up to 6 hours per day

Reading without subvocalizing, not worrying about the reading (you're not vocalizing it anyway) i can read very fast
RTK helps with that, you don't need to process words individually because you can read the meaning of a string of kanji like you can read the meaning of alphabet words without vocalizing it.

>but anon, if you don't know or vocalize the readings you're not actually reading!
you can't read faster than you can speak anyway. I know it because you see it on the news but i don't need to subvocalize 北朝鮮労働党委員長 every time I see it on the news, it's a long string and it takes you .001 seconds to recognize it just by shape even if you forgot the reading.

I'm lazy and I don't like looking up words so if I recognize the kanji and can guess the meaning from the context I never bother looking up the reading because I know the meaning when I see the word while reading. I'm bad at reading because I don't read enough to recall readings even if I can recognize the word, it's meaning and understand it if someone says it to me

>> No.21703502

Subvocalization is exactly whatever awareness of word pronunciations and prosody you automatically experience when reading. If you do not subvocalize, then you do not map out pronunciations and prosody, and you do not properly understand how clauses connect or in what locations emphasis lies. If you are literate, you subvocalize. The only things that can block subvocalization are not knowing the language, not knowing how words are read, skimming, and being deeply autistic. If you do not subvocalize, and you are otherwise normal, then you're skipping words you don't know or you're skimming. There's nothing wrong with skimming, but you can't act like people who read properly and experience subvocalization as a result are doing it wrong, because if anyone is doing it wrong it's you. Not that you're actually doing it wrong, just, if you decide that anyone is, it's you, not them.

Japanese people skip words they don't know how to read in kanji like 祠 or 銅鑼 even if they actually know the word in the spoken language cuz it doesn't matter cuz they know Japanese.
You're a jsl so it matters because you don't know what a native with your personality would be expected to read so you just have to look up everything you don't know how to read, ideally you should figure out how a native would actually intonate it in context too but that's often too hard to find out if it's unvoiced narration.

That goes without saying. This entire discussion started with me saying my listening is better than my reading. Which is intentional and I intend to start reading more because I'm at a level where reading isn't premature anymore and won't cripple my listening. Can we all just agree that it's actually possible for your listening to be better than your reading and please stop bullying me.

Additionally
-I do not normally speed read Japanese specifically because you measure reading by knowing the readings, but it's an ability I have
-I look up words when listening because it's convenient to look up words because you can just type what you heard and mouseover
-I look up the readings if mouseover or text hooker is available
-Only time I ignore words is if I have a strong hunch of the meaning and would have to draw the kanji to look it up
-If I don't understand it at all I look it up, I don't "guess" meanings if I'm not 100% certain so I look up the nuances of adjectives

It does help after your listening ability is up to a certain point, same goes for reading. Listening makes reading easier, and listening makes reading easier. With listening your reading flows better, atleast in my case. I noticed that listening gains shouldn't be ignored. My pronounciation in my head fixed itself after I started listening, I was able to read faster and smoother while subvocalizing. While learning new vocabulary in reading helps in picking it up in listening.

i can understand plenty with context clues. the problem is that that "understanding" is meaningless to me. i'm not actually hearing a constant stream of complete sentences. it's just fragments - largely individual words. reading hasn't crippled my ability to hear the language. i simply pick up far less while listening than reading because i'm better at reading. i'm not used to hearing the words and don't catch a lot of them. and that discrepancy is incredibly annoying and it's boring to push through.

the 10 hour claim makes me question if you even know what it means to understand grammar because there's a hell of a lot more to understanding the grammar in any language than anything anyone could accomplish in 10 hours. maybe you mean something else.

I haven't learned pitch accent consciously, I've acquired and continue to do so naturally. If you don't acquire pitch accent naturally from the beginning you have to learn it manually like まあtt did. Have you seen that video where he rants for 30 minutes about his search for the right pitch of そう in different contexts because he completely ignored it for 8 years?

>i'm not actually hearing a constant stream of complete sentences.
>it's just fragments - largely individual words.
>reading hasn't crippled my ability to hear the language.

Hold it right there. So you're telling me you can read and understand grammar but you can only pick out individual words? After more than a hundred hours?
You claim to know the readings and should be able to sound out words but then you can't hear them? That sounds a hell of a lot like your listening comprehension is permanently crippled. If you hadn't imagined what the words sound like for god knows how long you would NOT have this problem. You know sentence order, you know vocabulary, you know grammar but then you can't hear them? Can you actually even read if you have difficulty deciphering grammar at natural speech velocity? Can you at least read that fast on paper?

You sound like you should be at 10 hour level at the most and you should already understand at the very least 90% of what you could by reading at 150 hours.

Learning method arguments are irrelevant. Nobody is going to get good without putting in the quality nihongo time and nobody is going to put in the quality nihongo time without getting good.

Dick measuring contests are irrelevant. It doesn't matter if you can read 団扇 if you can't parse 一番はやいです properly.

The only useful exchanges to be had between beginners and non-beginners is correcting misunderstandings and steering them away from things that are just going to waste their time for no good reason.

Don't fall in to the endless cycle of shitposting about meaningless nonsense. If you're going to shitpost, shitpost about things that actually matter, like how awful wanikani is, or how fucking awful Anki's default settings are, or how you need to listen to real Japanese if you don't want your understanding of grammatical flow to be crippled, or how bad some reading recommendations are, or how pointless it is to micromanage your learning efficiency.

Stop arguing for hours on end with beginners if you're not doing it to carefully trap them in their own misunderstandings to lay them bare and show them how lost they are.

If you can't even get the big things right, the thread might as well die off.

well it's 100% true so it's not about how anyone feels. however it depends on the material. the reason this doesn't apply to vocab decks as much is that (if you're doing it the DJT or AJATT way) you mine as you read and preferably you're mining frequent words so you're getting constant exposure to them. you're not necessarily gonna expose yourself to 2200 of the RTK kanji in a few months, but it depends on how many hours a day you read and what material you read. there's plenty of VNs and LNs for example that only have like 1700 kanji and it can take people a couple months to get through one. and you're not necessarily going to mine every single word with a unique kanji.

where's the misunderstanding here, do you seriously think that it's "EITHER do RTK OR learn vocab", and that because RTK itself doesn't teach vocab and readings that it necessarily was a waste of time (because you stop there?)

learning words is easier if you already know the kanji

>> No.21706442

>>21706397
>but you're going to get confused every time you see similar looking kanji
even if that happened for SOME kanji (certainly not “every time”. let’s say 10% max, for the most challenged individuals), taking the time to write out the two or three you’re mixing up and/or identify the radicals that make them different, would take about 1 minute for each mistaken pair, perhaps even less. doing that for 100 pairs of kanji would take less than 10 minutes a day for 10 days, or 5 minutes a day for 20 days. still WAY less time than RTK. RTK is overkill because the kanji that are easy to get mixed up (for some people) are so few in comparison to the whole. just learning words and then clearing up those mixups as you go along is a much better use of one’s time.

Stolen from the Reddit post:

I have been watching and enjoying Shirokuma on [animelon.com](https://animelon.com) and was wondering what anime would be best to watch after that. Since I am still lower intermediate level, I figured I would do an analysis of all subtitles for all animes on [animelon.com](https://animelon.com) to figure out which animes are easist to watch.

This is what I came up with... my analysis has many issues and problems and I am aware of that. This is why I was even more surprised to find that K-On!! and Shirokuma Cafe are both in the top 3. I made this analysis for my own purposes, but I figured, maybe it is useful to others as well...

Some notes on the data:

* punctuation, latin words and and arabic numbers have been filtered before the analysis... I am sure that the filtering didn't work perfectly</wbr></wbr>

most of the time the keyword will give you a good enough clue on the meaning that you don't need to, also being able to use handwriting input for dictionary lookup is a huge help (people merely learning to recognise kanji, either through LazyKanji or just learning vocab, can't do this since even if they learn component decomposition they tend to not learn stroke order)

it’s called familiarizing yourself with radicals. RTK is not necessary at all for that. there’s a deck of about 200 of them in the resources. if you want you could even break down random kanji you’ve found in words into their radicals and soon you’ll be recognizing them in all kanji you see. again, no RTK necessary.

To do so would be insane.

One of the major problems with Japanese is the immense number of homonyms and 同訓異字. If you learn 聴、聞 and 訊 all with the Japanese keyword 「きく」with which all of those kanji can be read, you will have completely defeated the purpose of having unique keywords for the purpose of disambiguation.

Eventually, as you accumulate more and more kanji and compounds, the keywords will start to fade away, leaving you with a "feeling" for the basic senses of the character. It's quite gratifying when you notice that occurring.

But, a word of warning: do not attempt to extend the RTK keyword method past the 常用漢字, as it will rapidly become unwieldy. I know about 6000字 now, and trying to keep them all straight with unique keywords would have been an insane waste of time and effort. After 常用漢字, it is best to acquire new characters in the context of new compounds and idioms.
