> 強く握られた墨ちゃんの左手はとっくに手繋ぎの握力じゃなくて家族じゃなくても「分け合える」
> そう言ってもらえてるような気がした

I'm not used to seeing this pattern used like in the sentence above ~て~ても
Is the first て simply being used as the conjunction "and" in the example above?
So it reads as "Sumi's grip was no longer that of a couples' AND I had a feeling she was saying that we don't need to be family to share (this feeling)"
That reads very awkwardly so I suspect it's incorrect.

RTK works by linking each kanji with a unique keyword so your brain learns to distinguish them individually and stop treating them as "blurry scribble that probably reads like XX... probably".

Ok. (I'll get to my point in a while, just hear me out first.)

I'm not a beginner, I did Heisig when I first started learning japa but I burned out eventually. After that I just moved on.

That said, I do like how "memorable" some kanji still are, the ones I do remember from way back. I just can't seem to forget those and I instantly recognize them. I also NEVER confuse those with anything else, contrary to some others.
Therefore I decided to do Heisig again, which should be a lot easier now (mainly cause I'm no longer an idiot with "1 10" anki steps and 0% lapse modifier).

>get to japanese judas-tree
>google it out of curiosity (and to get a mental picture of wtf that was)
>it's how you write Katsura's name
>probably won't forget it from now on

So, here's where I'm getting at:
What if I changed "japanese judas-tree" to a picture of Katsura (or just his name or something)?
The need for me to reproduce the kanji from memory would still be there.
Why not change 憂 to a picture of Tanaka Aiko?
Why not change 妙 to a picture of Araki?
Why not change 漢 into MOTHERFUCKING KAMINA!

Thoughts?

just do mnemonics that you are likely to remember

Also, start with shorter texts. Either take something with short passages (twitter / manga) or divide your text in shorter parts. Like instead of thinking: "I have to read all of this ..." you'll go like: "Okay, I'll read this sentence / paragraph." Then just think: "Hmm, okay, I read that. Now I can read the next paragraph."

best possible way to use anki for vocab gains without hating it
1)never add anything you've only seen once 2)put only the most context fitting japanese def on the FRONT but make the font small, and the word you're studying big
3)test for the reading on the back
you will absorb like osmosis. the fact you've already seen the word multiple times in your input before adding it will prime your brain to WANT to know what it means, which means just seeing the def repeatedly will be enough to remember the meaning the next time you see it, especially if its in japanese. and after the first 1 to 3 reps you probably won't have to look at the j def at all and can just feel the meaning and go straight to testing for the reading. most 楽 and 効果的 anki usage on the planet.
so far i've remembered every single word i've repped in that deck the next time i saw it in the wild, meaning and reading. should have thought of this earlier

have a crack at this fun little reading here:

「木」というのは、
自然の状態で生えている一本の樹木を指します。
それと同時に、
建材や家具材などに加工されたものに対しても
「木」という漢字を使います。
それに対して「樹」という字は
生きている樹木に対してしか使われません。
つまり生きている樹木に対しては
「木」と「樹」は両方当てはまりますが、
一度切ってしまった樹木は「木」と表現され、
「樹」ではなくなるということです。

Do you guys ever use TTS to generate audio for your sentence cards?
I found this cool TTS software that doesn’t sound like complete ass, and it also lets you pick from a number of emotional inflections (normal, happy, mad, sad)

I think that one of the problems I've run into while reading is that I'll read and read and read for hours, relying only on my gaijin brain to imagine what it should actually sound like in terms of tone, pitch accent, inflection, etc... I figure that even a halfway-decent TTS will sound more naturally Japanese than most gaijin attempts to sound it out without ever hearing it before

I think you'd see a far better time to reward ratio if you focused on mining a few (8-15) sentences per day from material that you're really interested in. Maybe even include pictures and audio from the relevant source context in your anki notes so that you get as much context as possible during your reviews. The point of sentence mining is to use shortcuts to build mental associations between language and context, not burn yourself out. don't listen to the "hurr just feel bro" jackasses, or at least don't interpret that advice as "just read whatever and ignore grammar."

look up the grammar points you don't know well and practice reading the example sentences provided in various grammar guides you find. you might even want to mine those sentences if you're familiar with most of the words in them, but you don't have to. just reread the sentences every now and then. i did this with DoJG and it really helped my understand of stuff that i would just kinda gloss over while reading. but remember, read the sentences. rote memorizing an explanation is difficult and not as useful.

So far the vast majority of DJT has neither understood the concept behind anime cards, the optimal way to create them or the optimal way to review them despite me explaining it several times. Instead DJT keeps crying about some made up shit because here is an amazing method that they can’t make use of because it exceeds their intellectual capacity or just because they can’t follow instructions and do some dumb shit to fuck it up and they are bitter about it.

-You hear a sentence you can otherwise understand, but with a word you don't know
-Mine the word which goes on the front of the card
-The reading, sentence, audio and any additional needed context, and image go on the back

And yea, it's not fun for me thus far. In fact because I have to spend 20-30 seconds making each card it's just kind of annoying. Perhaps it is because you have to get to a high level for anything you're able to understand to be entertaining. I still can't imagine that being fun though so I don't know. Day 1: Learn hiragana by copying them a bunch of times.
Day 2: Read some Kancolle doujin by looking unknown words up by drawing them into Google Translate on my cellphone. Also, read a page off Tae Kim's grammar guide.
Day 5: I think I read a chapter of Yotsuba. Yasasii as fuck.
Day 6-16: Tried copying the katakana charts everyday. I forgot 'em because I never saw them being used.
Day 25-30 (?): Watched Manabi Straight. I understood most of it mostly because I'd already been watching anime for years now.
Month 2: Read a bit off Yotsuba every day till I got done with volumes 1-3. Also, masturbated to some h-doujin manga every few days.
Month 3: Read a bit more of Tae Kim's Grammar Guide. Did my second round of trying to learn katakana. I was able to succeed this time by writing names like フロイド and ウィットゲンシタイン down.
Month 4: Masturbated some more. I think I watched Sola. I came across lots of unknown words there.
Month 5: Went through the rest of Tae Kim's Grammar Guide. Started learning kanji by studying the 教育漢字 list on Wikipedia. I did very little progres, but I remember that the kanji I learnt back then (all of grade 1 and much of grade 2) is what I can most easily recall how to read and write. I read a volume of 侵略いか娘, and a few chapters off several other manga (cue for the "manga isn't reading" people).
Month 6: After being inspired by DJT, I decided to read はなひら and ななついろドロップス. The former took me 4 days to get through. The latter took me 3 months to finish. Also, started with the KanjiDamage anki deck. After a few weeks, I decided to suspend the production cards so I could make it through my reviews faster. That's more or less when I stopped learning how to write new kanji. I think I read some of Imabi's guide too.
Month 7-9: I read some lessons off Imabi's guide, kept on reading the same VN (7tuiro Drops), which I did greatly enjoy, due to its characters, its setting, its kirakira stuff. Using a mined vocabulary deck strongly helped increase my vocabulary.
Month 10 (current): Have read a few volumes off a few LNs (キノの旅, OniAi, 物語), kept on mining. Have started heading into watching lots of random videos on Youtube for the sake of opening myself up to lots of different ways of speaking, vocabulary, content, etc. Even studied and was able to pass my Calculus/Physics exams by watching some tutorials in Japanese for them.

Dumb on so many levels. You’re better off just learning how to speak the language instead of wasting your time. Even Japanese people spend 10+ years studying their backwards ass kanji system and most of them still cant even read a newspaper. You guys are hilarious wasting your time attempting that shit.

I don't like the system dictionary file that comes with Windows 10 (that you use when you type to convert kana to kanji), there's too many words/names it's not familiar with and adding them individually sucks. You can add other dictionary files in the settings of the .dic, .dctx, .dctxc varieties but I can't find any. Does anybody know where you can get a hold of such dictionaries? Even just one based on jmdict would be great

did you read the guide? you can learn the 500 most basic words to make tae kims example sentences more comprehensible in about 3 weeks with anki. you're gonna be learning this language for years and years so 3 weeks is literally nothing. btw you are years off from being able to make sentences that don't sound like complete ass anyways so don't even worry about that lol

maybe read the whole guide then? you might also want to consider that this language isn't for you if you've already tried and given up a few times. the barrier to entry is pretty high because of the writing system and if you can't get through the initial months where you feel like you're drowning and like its hopeless you prolly wont make it. no shame in that either.

in any case learning kanji really isn't that hard, essentially anybody can do it. over a hundred millions japs did it, are you saying you're dumber than all of them? id bet my ass you havent even really tried to learn vocabulary. as i said before consider that this isn't for you.

nigga have u even tried yet lol. u sound like me when i first started and hadn't actually done shit to remember vocab but was just freaked out by how complicated kanji looked
some anki will do you good
also while you're drilling basic vocab look out for the pieces of kanji that look identical ("radicals") don't worry about what they're called just get used to noticing them. it'll help make kanji feel less daunting when you can point out common features in their appearances. and of course as you learn more words you'll see readings of the same kanji repeat in different words, like
感覚 かんかく
感触 かんしょく
触手 しょくしゅ
don't expect every kanji to have the same reading for every word its in, just notice when they do and it will make it all seem much less daunting.

>> No.21682442
