Not really. The idea of Higurashi being some kind of gameboard between Lambda and Bern is an awkwardly handled retcon that doesn't make a lot of sense. Rika's struggle doesn't play out anything like the Red Truth-Blue Truth duels between Battler and the witches, so I have no idea how the rules of such a game would work.

Rika wouldn't make for a very proactive "piece" either. About the only times she made any genuine effort to fight fate before Minagoroshi-hen were her warnings to Akasaka, and trying to fight off Shion in Meakashi-hen.

I always thought Higurashi was a gameboard between Featherine and Lambda, with Rika being trapped behind when Featherine simply abandoned the gameboard after a logic error. IIRC it matches everything we know: Featherine did have Bern/Rika as a miko gamepiece, proto-Bern really was trapped in a logic error after her master left her for greener pasture, and she really clawed her way back out and became a witch as a result. And then won against Lambda.

And it maches Higurashi quite well. Higurashi is the birth of Bern, she certainly wasn't a gamemaster at the beginning.

To me the concept just feels like something that adds nothing of value to Higurashi's story and only serves to force a connection between it and Umineko.

A gameboard is a very metaphysical and metaphorical idea. It could represent any kind of competition between HauHau and Lambda: and as they represent concepts, too, it could be almost anything, really. You're too close to Umineko, a mystery game between a witch and a detective. Higurashi almost certainly doesn't have a detective, and it isn't a mystery game either.

Higurashi could have been absolutely anything involving the concept of Certainty and Theatergoing manipulating things from afar. It's a "game", but the rules aren't specified, only that Featherine abandoned it mid-game and Bern "transcended".

One of my pet ideas is that Witch isn't even the correct name for Voyager witches and all. Witch is very tied to the Umineko gameboard, it's a conceptualization of Yasu. In Requiem it's Yasu who call Lambda a witch first. Every time I hear words such a "voyager witch", I keep in mind that it is Yasu's translation of what a voyager witch really is.

I can totally see Lambda and Bern being called "fourth dimensional quantum beings" in Cico with a wholly different interpretation of what they are, because it is ultimately a translation, and the gameboard would be different, with different rules.

That's true for the Eiserne Jungfrau, who are both embodiment of concepts and given life in vessels shaped by Yasu's gameboard. In that case, cute lolis. That's doubly true for the Chiesters and the Stakes, which embodies concepts that seem to originate from the gameboard - though the Chiesters are a very grey area. It could be only a conceptualization of the concept of firearms in general.

It's implied they are on orders from Irie Kyōsuke. Everything else is a paranoid delusion, but Irie just wanted to watch Keiichi and follow him around in case he developed the syndrome.

It was never true. Higurashi pointedly makes the point that that theory of Takano is just false. She misunderstood old social ties for something more. It can be argued that Rika has a soothing effect on carriers, but again it's more or less disproved. Rika is just a cute and respected girl. Takano thought she was mind-controlling everyone.
