/jp/, I like this thread, so I'll share a little theory I have.

We all know how women can be attracted to "bad boys" right? Ostensibly, this is because they like the idea of changing them to be "nice guys". Now, the wisdom of trying to change somebody into someone they might not want to be is certainly questionable, but that's a whole other issue. The question here is, is that specifically a woman thing?

The answer is no; men have the same impulse (possibly even an instinct). It simply expresses itself differently: often in VNs, anime, and video games as more XXtreeeme!!. So instead of "bad girls", we have Saya, a horrific Lovecraftian monstrosity from another dimension--who, at the same time, is a young woman. We have Yuka (Gore Screaming Show), incredibly sadistic, violent and obsessive, effectively an undead lich--who also happens to be a young woman. And we have Rei (Evangelion), a human/alien/divine-entity hybrid clone with defective social skills--also a, well, you get the idea. And not just anime. In more traditional literature, take Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew, or anything derivative of Pygmalion.

I'm about to start this; is there an English walkthrough anywhere for it?

So what do these scenarios have in common? In each case, the male protagonist by circumstance is placed in the position of serving as a bridge between a female at conflict with normal humanity (note that "normality" and "humanity" can be extremely subjective and slippery, especially in SnU). He is given the task, explicitly or implicitly, of resolving the conflict and allowing the female to join "normal humanity" or at least allowing her and humanity to peacefully co-exist.
