For controls, just remember that 'z' opens an action menu. For how to play, get a little girl as your starting pet and rely heavily on her. If you're playing Custom-G, the Adventure Seminar will be fully translated and gives useful advice (in addition to the free stuff you get from Karata the mascot for asking the teacher all the questions).

I had the same issue about a decade ago. Just felt weird as heck having to actually move my hand over to the right half of the letters, or slowly use the z pie menu.
Got used to it over time, but still felt weird regardless.

Coming back several years later, it simply felt and feels natural.
Whether that's due to age, due to experience with roguelikes, increased wrist/arm mobility from exercise, my gloriously low resistance cherry mx red keyboard, or just tolerance with control schemes in general, I don't know. But shit's SO cash.

I had considered again and again to configure it for VI movement to avoid numpad/numlock reliance or excess arm movement. But it was never simple. I'd into problems with run configs not working for anything but the numpad (Like that guy last thread), or 3rd party remapping blocking normal text entry, requiring an annoying toggle.
But oh well. Doesn't feel like a problem now.

You shouldn't be fighting stuff right off the bat. Do easy jobs in towns for a while. Get yourself and your little girl fully kitted out in gear and have a blacksmith enhance it all to +2 (including the jewelry).

What version are you on? In vanilla class isn't terribly important and in plus you can change your class. Class is somewhat important in oomsest and ninja and samurai seem to be the overall best to me.

Regardless of version, take the hypnotism feat ASAP. It gives you a weak attack that can never miss and reliably inflicts sleep. It's a great solution to early game accuracy problems, and it never goes out of date. Also take exorcist so your stuff doesn't get cursed at night. Dimensional move is another good one, it lets you teleport to a random location a short distance away at the cost of a little stamina. On the off chance you're in oomsest, take guts as well. The feats that increase speed and life are not worth taking in plus, but are good elsewhere. The luck boosting feats are too weak to be worth taking.

Alright then, the reason why speed and life feats are a waste is because plus gives you a way to raise them up to very high levels later. Grenades are pretty nice early on, though they have a friendly fire problem. Your own grenades won't hurt you, so feel free to hypnotize an enemy and follow it up with a point-blank grenade while they sleep.

Having a few pets around is a good way to increase your power quickly. I like to buy a wizard of elea from the slave trader in derphy because their magic attacks can't miss and sometimes paralyze enemies. Buying a horse in yowyn and using the riding skill is also a good idea to increase your speed in the early game - speed is the most important stat in Elona. For the long term I like to use a defender for their once-per-day revive ability. Bells are also popular pets for their speed and defense. Going solo is still totally viable and if you decide to do so, pick up the kokou/isolation feat for a +20% bonus to your speed.

If you examine an artifact weapon, and it has the living weapon property, hold on to that. Living weapons are far superior to other weapons in plus until artifact fusion becomes available in the late game, and even then living weapons are still very viable. Martial arts is also extremely good in plus, probably better than any possible melee weapon. If you go that route, equip claws, shields, and tonfas in your hand slots. Even if you do go with martial arts, it's a good idea to keep a living weapon in your ranged slot so you can fill it with useful things like elemental resistances. Likewise, if you decide to be a gunner, it's a good idea to equip a living weapon with useful enchantments in at least one of your hand slots.

If you're playing Elonaplus you should definitely be playing some form of Custom. For translation and tweaks at least.
Custom-G may be optional due to all its changes (Even though it does provide a more thorough translation)
But Custom is a straight up improvement in ways that don't affect game balance at all. There's no real reason to get plus without Custom.

Would I be missing out if I played 1.84 for my first time? It seems to be the only version I can get Custom and Custom-G on. I also can't find regular elona+ on that version for some reason.

Exorcist, hypnotism, dimensional move. Short, medium, and long distance runner aren't bad if you do things that use a lot of stamina like performing or combat special actions. Kokou, strings assassin, knockout, and knowledge of magical plants are good in Plus. Guts and specializing in your favorite weapon are good in Omake variants. Agile and Ascetic are bad in Plus but good elsewhere. Lucky is bad everywhere.

All classes end up the same after 20 hours, unless you intentionally skip certain skills and aspects of the game.
What class decides is how your early game goes, and what else you need to pick up to set up your leveling engine.
Hell, you can change classes later on with business cards.

And also, other than for abusing travelling, there's no reason not to gimp yourself by not picking up the other skills.
With that said, farmers are born into mad dosh and skill growths, pianists are pretty rich too and also breeze through the early game with pets, but if ez quests in town is just not your style and you'd rather hit dungeons, then warrior, predator, or warmage are all reasonably durable enough to not get oneshotted. Gives you time to throw potions or zap your teleport rod.

Yeah it disables that 10 minute timer for getting any of those drops after loading saves.
It doesn't rebalance all of those drops back to the rarer rate of previous versions though.

That anti-savescumming update to plus itself changed a lot of chances for things people would normally savescum for, to try and de-incentivise that.
If you play now, and either wait 10 minutes after loading a save or turn on that Tweak, you'll be practically drowning in happy beds and prayer necklace things, compared to before at least. For better or worse.

first, join the fighters guild in port kapul to train weight lifting, which increases the amount of weight you can carry without getting burdened. second, you don't want to pick up most of the stuff in a dungeon because of how little you can carry at low levels. third, the stat boosts you get from food at a baker are nothing to laugh at but if you have a pet with the cooking skill it'll make you breakfast sometimes if you wake up in the morning.

I've always played pet heavy setups and struggled to make it past act 1, not due to combat being difficult, but due to micromanaging so many inventories and character growths being a complete bitch.

At the same time, deep dungeon diving progress gets stopped whenever SOMEONE in the fucking party, not saying who, but she should know who she is, someone isn't durable enough to survive breath attacks.
Resurrection spells and books help mitigate the problem for a while, but if even generic enemies breath your weakest link to death, its back to micromanaging ally stats, again.

Also, allies hurt your ranch space.
A reasonable amount of combat allies that won't hurt progression speed would probably be 1-3 of them only, and probably consist of zombie girl, mount/backup inventory, or defender/some other durable person you wont need to babysit, like fire dragon child.
If you want to continue the necromancer roleplay, you could dominate random pets to serve as meatshields as you go along, and throw them away afterwards so you don't need to micromanage more shit.

Lastly, there's no reason not to be both a necromancer and gunner (other than gunners being meh). You'll need a backup way to fight anyway.

Farming/herbs, small medals, setting up your money engine to buyout all your problems, growing a pet into a godkiller (usually faster than you), the grind for 2000 speed which involves rock concerts with summoned spirits for some reason, LIVING WEAPONS, artifact fusion.

I really really like the gameplay of the grinding loops. From the dungeoncrawl+jobs, to the tryhard reset loop spamming ones. Something about it all is comfortable as hell.
Also the roguelike setting, enjoyable self-controlled progression of numbers, 'just right' graphics that can easily be edited by practically anyone to portray a lot of custom things, the list of skills and several ways to train them.
The storyline is nice simple shit too. Nothing excessively engaging, nothing that requires a lot of care or attention to get.

I play it because I want to, simple as is.
It could be argued that it's fun, or exactly why it's fun due to gloriously self controlled rate of progress based around activity, potential, platinum, potions, and scrolls, as well as great balance of multiple different activities breaking up the grind into smaller sections.
But really, the reason I play is because I want to. That simple emotion of desiring to continue, regardless of whatever causes it, is the very reason to play itself.

There's not much difference in the long term. The Q can use draw shadow to pull enemies into melee range and the penguin gets browbeat after evolving to reduce enemy damage.

Equipment stats are normally randomized. A craft repair kit changes your item's stats to the absolute maximum it can be based on its quality and material. Stats are rerolled when changing materials so always use your material kit first and your craft repair kit after.

There are two separate races for little girl and little boy.
If you want to make it a little girl (male), just use forbidden meat on it.

Just grow them on a ranch. If you're playing modern elonaplus or elonaplus custom, not custom-g (unless Harvest Moon mode is toggled), then you'll need to feed them milk to regrow their size and make them produce milk/eggs/etc.
Anything before 1.89, or custom-g without HM mode on, they'll produce naturally without effort.

And this works with any creature. You can even get milk of old man, or milk of some eldritch abomination.

Practically all builds are viable. Some less effective and some more grindy than others, some really overpowered.

Light equipment is helpful for casting chance. Any equipment can be made light eventually anyway. But that's overall equipment weight, not just armour.
If I remember correctly, the 2h style makes use of incredibly heavy weapon weight for either damage or massive crit damage bonus. But that would cancel out light armour's lack of casting penalty.
So that kind of goes against each other. But yeah, it is indeed viable.

Since you're going barbarian, you probably want to avoid casting for roleplay?
Avoiding magic at all would be incredibly painful (for you), but with enough effort it's viable too. Not very pleasant, but viable.
I'd recommend at least using scrolls/potions. If not some spells and rods.

If you want to try out omake branches, then either go with oomSEST or OOM-EN-hack.
ENhack is fully translated and pretty well understood with some other OOM fork stuff backported to it
And oomSEST is much more developed and supposedly translated as well but its English documentation isn't very detailed.
You could roleplay fine in fine any Elona version/fork though. The choice comes down to personal preference for gameplay/style/etc.

It's viable though heavy armor works best with weapons. The reason is that your weapon's weight counts as part of your armor's weight, and in plus the best weapons are super heavy ones. Not too big of a deal though. Starting class isn't terribly important, I personally favor warmage for the extra casting chance. Buffs and utility spells are still very nice on fighters.

Omake is also good, personally, I prefer it over plus. Go with oomsest if you try an omake variant. Plus is easier to get into though, it's probably the best version to try if you don't have experience with Elona or roguelikes.

Comfy; comfortable; is something that brings about feelings of comfort or relaxation.
Grinding is something that's repetitive, monotonous, and slow. Usually something that progresses numbers and takes a really long time.
Grinding comfortably is comfy grinding. Totally possible, and definitely reasonable.
You may find it difficult personally, but that doesn't make it an oxymoron.

There's no reason to start with predator unless you're really roleplaying up the uncivilized savage angle.
They start fully naked, and with slightly poorer stats than a warrior.

Its not much, but at least warriors start with some dice to protect them/hit with.
Its all the difference between barely being able to fight a kobold, or straight dying to the tutorial putits.
Also, warriors start with weightlifting. You're saving plats in the opening already. Predators get anatomy instead, but that's less important than immediately getting to work on the slow-growing weightlifting.

is there a way to make pets hostile? i want to dominate some selected pets for training, namely asuras for dodge, acid slimes to tank weapons to - 10 to train vs full rubynus titans (unless weapon damage matters on training and im memeing myself)

Every rank of ascetic adds 5 to your life stat (which is a multiplier for your hp). AP can get your life up to 300. If you first took the ascetic feats, then used AP to increase your life, it would still stop you after you hit 300. The increase from the feats goes to waste. Cargo trading seems like it's too dull even for me.

Since you already have a foodshop, you could get/use anatomy and start cooking a bunch of corpses from dungeon crawling. They sell for a notable amount there.
Make sure to have a barbecue set or lesser food cooker of some sort on you at all times, and scroll of inferior material that to paper for weight's sake. Since cooked corpses are all 0.5s and raw are often a lot higher. (10s+ corpses are great for God Favor, but whatever, don't worry about that for now)
Once you get a Super Lure you can also fish/cook a bunch and sell it in the shop too.

Same thing as I did at the start. Grind dungeons without blowing meteor on them. Usually with ranged (animations off) for convenience so I don't have to step near monsters or track magic stocks outside of Cure of Jure for bosses.
But now magic mapping every single floor and beelining to the stairs. Though still holding [f]ire for every group of mobs in sight.
Then going into town, checking shops, raising potentials with platinum, and doing all the jobs I feel like doing in that moment, before going back to dungeons.
Still not boring.

Just farming tons of herb in herbs, buying out stocks, getting a group of hungry demons to attack you, and spamming eating is probably most efficient.

Also F3 works better for spam passing time.
But if you're just blowing in game time for the hell of it, moving between multiple towns for multiple vendor/job stocks is probably better. Definitely with your palace in the rotation for all its hired vendors, obviously, but towns too.

You can recruit gwen in OO, there's a pot of fusion recipe for human transmutation, that'll create a pet of the chosen mob. Just need the parts.

In plus her mewmewmew has been nerfed into the ground, Opatos' hyper mode however, can hug you with another super attack that I don't think was nerfed. Sprite numbers might not align right after several versions.
And whole character.bmp sheets might not contain newer monsters, leaving them as blank squares or large squares of color instead.

Thankfully it's fairly trivial image editing to fix. As long as you have example/default sheets/numbers for each version you're taking from and porting to.

Plus Custom G has multiple continents with their own quests and stories beyond North Tyris from the original. Your character grows much faster than in vanilla Elona, beating Frisia in Plus will probably take about as long as beating Zeome did in vanilla. For better or for worse, it's also quite a bit easier to maintain high potentials and obtain strong equipment than it was in vanilla. Plus generally rewards taking low level pets and raising them to high level, the reverse of how it was in vanilla.

Omake variants are far more similar to vanilla. If you play one, you want oomsest, which is the latest and overall best, and has recently gotten an english translation. Much like vanilla, oomsest is all about North Tyris, you can visit South Tyris like you could in vanilla, but it's barren. Supposedly the author intends to flesh it out in the future. Strong points of Omake variants/oomsest are that there's a lot more variety in random dungeons, you can meet other adventurers in random dungeons and team up with them or kill them for their stuff, and there are more NPC encounters on the world map. Another good point is that character building is much more in depth. There are a ton of new feats and they tend to be stronger than vanilla feats. Raising low level pets to high levels is a lot better than it was in vanilla, but so is taking a high level pet and raising it even further. Pets are overall pretty overpowered in both mods.

I've tried to preserve things like that. The only time I caved that I can think of off the top of my head was the change to horse noises. If you're going for necromancer, I'd recommend stacking damage null and/or reduce physical damage enchants. You can get them on shields(hand slots) or with garok hammering (arms/heads). Damage null is capped at 50% in plus, but it'll take quite a lot of reduce physical damage enchant to get to the 90% cap. I don't think it can be reached, but you should be able to get past 50% fairly easily, so I'll recommend that + magic resist. You'll be resistant to most all forms of damage that can be resisted normally. Damage null would cover everything, though.

Blacksmith hammers are custom items. You need to go into user > item > omake overhaul and replace the japanese blacksmith hammer file with the english version. The file you're looking for is blacksmith hammer.ooitem.

For some reason the english oomsest translation doesn't include all of the translated files for custom gods and items. If you download omake overhaul en hack the files should be there. Don't install OO En Hack over your oomsest install, only copy the files for custom items and gods over.

Particularly making platinum raise more and fall faster, incentivising frequent trips to trainers and tighter focus on specific skills you want to train right then, to keep them at 300%+.

Would it be possible, feasible, and/or easy to have raw Japanese like that in Custom-G rather than machine translation for untranslated stuff?
It would definitely require a font that supports Japanese, which cuts out A LOT of monospaced fonts, but still.
That sounds preferable to machine translation or swapping to full Japanese for such sections, to me.

The worst part is that a lot of it isn't even placeholders. Ano often copypastes code from somewhere else and only changes the Japanese text. I think there's some backstory exposition from Sophia that's just twenty-five separate pages of "Huh." in Plus, and some main quest dialogue that explains what's going on and what you're supposed to do that's just "I think not." "I think not." "I think not." "I think not." "I think not.".
If you wanted a complete(?) list of untranslated text, you'd have to use a diff tool to compare source.hsp with gsource.hsp, although that wouldn't cover translations that got backported from Custom-G to Custom.

The definition of meme hasn't changed at all. It's still the original one of memetics; an idea that passes through a culture.
5 years ago it was mostly focused on popular well spreading in jokes and the like, but those still fall within the definition of memetics.
Certainly, some people did consider such things to be ALL that meme means. (And the term Internet Meme was made to cover that now, I guess)

The issue here is with the wording though. That's what's annoying.
Using pets+ensemble is certainly a meme. Definitely. As something that caught on within the culture or communication around the game. Without a doubt it is a meme. Even with that temporary definition, it could be an in joke of sorts, I guess.
However, the question is whether it's JUST a meme. The speaker left that as implied; that it's nothing more than an idea that spreads, without any weight of its own in meaning.
The lack of the word "just", in common modern usage for such things, makes it seem as though being a meme AT ALL makes it lack weight inherently. Which is simply not true.

No, I mean practicing for your pets to get more xp, not ensemble. You don't really need to play for an audience to get xp, and they can throw stones at you. If they don't throw rocks, then its not a detriment, but their impress rating will plummet to 0 right quick, regardless. So they won't add anymore xp.
