Just download it and see if you can get through it without wanting to kill yourself. All the "easy" or "good for beginner" VNs are garbage. If you get bored because you have to look up too much shit or you can't understand it, then you'll have your answer on if you need to wait before picking it back up. I can't get through the beginning of Leyline and that's one of the most recommended on here for beginners, but I picked up 放課後の不適格者 and finished it in a week, despite being much harder.

How do I git gud at long sentences? No matter what I do, they just keep screwing me over, again and again. Reading more isn't really helping since I'm not really learning much from ultimately having to resort to a subpar translation.

Well, you shouldn't have to look them up to get the general idea and most of the details in a paragraph if you actually understand 98% of all words in it, but it doesn't really do too much harm to look up those words. Newbie here. Going through core2k is suffering. These words don't follow patterns. The word for "this week" is the kanji for "now" + the kanji for "week" and you just put them together to pronounce them, which makes sense, but that's the only "compound word" really, that's okay,
Okay so the word for "this [time period]" is the kanji for "now" except it's pronounced as "ko" or "kon" and then just learn how the time period day/month/whatever is pronounced when appended to it, okay that sounds right it's kinda like how the words for counting numbers were ___tsu that's okay and suddenly you get "this year" which doesn't follow that pronunciation pattern at all it's pronounced fucking "rainen" and I'm sure there's more and I know every language is like this but god is it difficult I don't know if I'm ever going to make it if I'm struggling this much this early

The way I eventually started looking at it is "i'm not memorizing the sound each individual kanji makes, i'm memorizing the sound each combination of kanji makes."
Once you've learned a ton more words and readings it'll become a lot easier. I never did RTK and barely mind, yet I'm often able to guess the readings of words I've never seen, provided I recognize the kanji they use.

The 訓読み usually goes with compound words, whereas the 音読み is often encountered in self-standing words.
There's exceptions, like 今年 or 品物, but they're not as common.
