Just download it and see if you can get through it without wanting to kill yourself. All the "easy" or "good for beginner" VNs are garbage. If you get bored because you have to look up too much shit or you can't understand it, then you'll have your answer on if you need to wait before picking it back up. I can't get through the beginning of Leyline and that's one of the most recommended on here for beginners, but I picked up 放課後の不適格者 and finished it in a week, despite being much harder.

If you pick shit that interests you, at worst that happens is you have to let it sit on your HDD until you get better and at best it motivates you to actually finish reading what you downloaded. If you rely on "is it good for beginners", then all you're gonna get is boring, simple drivel.

Getting used to having with a mixture of Chinese and non-Chinese words mixed together in a sentence

Cons of:
Not learning Japanese first of all:
Every moment spent on learning other languages is a moment not spent actually learning Japanese.
Every piece of your memory used up trying to recall words in any other language is a piece of your memory that could not be used to recall Japanese words.

efore considering modern Japanese, I think that it is easier to understand this by first understanding classical. Classical Japanese has three major regular verb classes: quadrigrade (四段), monograde (一段), and bigrade (二段). Both monograde and bigrade may further be sub-divided into upper (上) and lower (下). There are also four irregular classes: k-irregular, s-irregular, n-irregular, and r-irregular. Verbs are conjugated into six forms: irrealis (未然形), adverbial (連用形), conclusive (終止形), attributive (連体形), realis (已然形), and imperative (命令形).

Well, you shouldn't have to look them up to get the general idea and most of the details in a paragraph if you actually understand 98% of all words in it, but it doesn't really do too much harm to look up those words. If it were 1/500 instead of 1/50 words, then it would just be trying to fill in minuscule gaps.

Youtube, games, manga, web novels, light novels, "real" novels, social media, news, chatrooms, and everything else you can think of are all valid sources of Japanese reading/listening practice.

There are, however, a few things that you need to ensure that you're not lacking. Just like you need a balanced diet for your body to maintain itself.

This isn't broken down into types of grammar or words, it's broken down into "registers of speech".

This is not an exhaustive list.

* Heavily slurred speech (like fishermen or old countryside people)
* Extremely well-enunciated speech (like news show hosts or voice actors)
* Gendered speech (both genders)
* Memetastic internet cancer speech
* Vulgar/rude and gangster-like speech
* Modern colloquial speech
* However people spoke colloquially 50 years ago
* Normal dialogue
* Polite/formal/humble speech
* Narration of all kinds
* "Item name" or "news article title" syntax (where verbs and particles are heavily omitted)

If you consume too little of one of these, your brain won't develop the right compartmentalizations for it.

You will misunderstand its significance when it's used, and might use it accidentally in the wrong contexts.

Once the time is right, broaden your horizons and consume as many different kinds and sources of Japanese as possible.

Newbie here. Going through core2k is suffering. These words don't follow patterns. The word for "this week" is the kanji for "now" + the kanji for "week" and you just put them together to pronounce them, which makes sense, but that's the only "compound word" really, that's okay,
Okay so the word for "this [time period]" is the kanji for "now" except it's pronounced as "ko" or "kon" and then just learn how the time period day/month/whatever is pronounced when appended to it, okay that sounds right it's kinda like how the words for counting numbers were ___tsu that's okay and suddenly you get "this year" which doesn't follow that pronunciation pattern at all it's pronounced fucking "rainen" and I'm sure there's more and I know every language is like this but god is it difficult I don't know if I'm ever going to make it if I'm struggling this much this early

Nothing really. AJATT tells people they shouldn't read about grammar and should just mine the sentences from Tae Kim and SRS them instead instead. The problem with mining Tae Kim (besides it being a tedious, boring nightmare) is that the sentences aren't what Matt wrongly refers to as "i+1" (i.e. they don't introduce only one new word per sentence - some dump several on you all at once). That's where the Tango decks come in since they provide "i+1 sentences" (incremental sentences), so if you buy into the "don't read a grammar guide" AJATT bullshit then using the pre-made Tango decks is a better option than manually mining all ~800 of Tae Kim's example sentences.

It's worth noting that Matt got this Tango deck idea from one of his Patreons, which is to say he got it from one of those non-fluent people he's always telling everyone they shouldn't listen to. Matt in the past has actually said that he thinks it's a good idea to read about grammar, and it's known that he not only took classes but also read Tae Kim, so he didn't do anything like what his Patreon proposed when he was learning and doesn't have any evidence that it works or is a good idea. It's also known that Khatz didn't take his own advice about not reading about grammar either.

djt is pretty anti rtk, but it helped me. depends on what type of "learner" you are. if you're a hands-on visual brainlet like me, being able to write them made kanji significantly easier to distinguish. i tried just forcing myself to understand kanji by seeing it over and over again, but that wasn't good for me. basically try whatever you want and see what works best for you. the guide has a few options for tackling kanji.

>depends on what type of "learner" you are.
no such thing. all there is is intelligence. you didn't learn vocab while reading for a prolonged period of time without RTK so you have no idea how helpful RTK was relative to that.

reading will be painful at first no matter what you do to prepare
the one bit of advice i keep postin is this
some people spend a month or more tryin to go through grammar guides slow thinkin they need to remember everything in it
youre just gettin familiar with what kind of shit is in the language so that when you dont know whats goin on you have a clue on how to break it down and look shit up
you can always check shit until youve read enough that pieces of grammar just become intuitive
youre going to be looking up a lot of shit especially vocab so get used to it and focus on enjoying the media
the language will come and every so often youll look back and think woah i used suck a lot more

it's the pattern with every single person who claims to have attempted to learn words before doing RTK. at most they grinded core2k for a month, didn't read, and suddenly decided that they wouldn't be able to overcome the "kanji problem" without RTK.

however if they had just stuck with it (and read) for the amount of time it'd take them to finish RTK then they'd distinguish kanji just fine. you'll find people in djt who learned to read japanese without doing RTK or writing.

Yeah, that's basically it. There's nothing stopping you from doing Tae Kim and VN Core at the same time, though.

Vizualizing Japanese Grammar (check the CoR) is a better guide than Tae Kim but I don't know if you'll be able to follow it as someone with just starting out since the example sentences use grammar which the series itself hasn't explained yet. You can always give it a shot, but at the bare minimum you'll still need to read the "Writing System" section of Tae Kim first and learn kana. If you can manage VJG then it's worth using since the explanations it gives are infinitely better and more clear than those of pretty much any other resource out there.

No matter what grammar resource you use though, be prepared to suck (hard) when you first start reading. At the beginning you should be pleased with yourself just for getting the basic gist of most sentences you read, but the more you read the better you'll get, and the more time you can spend per day reading the faster you'll improve.

Onyomi readings for common everyday word compounds are a mess, it's best to not even try to make up a reasoning for when which character is pronounced which way but to just recognize what the Kanji represent and remember the Japanese word for it.

The good news is that for longer compound words and less common words the readings become by and large very predictable after a while with the occasional exception that will trip you up. But especially at the start it's terrible since a lot of the more commonly used Kanji also have the most readings.

But that also means you will see them so often that you'll just learn it either way if you keep it up, so it's best not to worry about it too much.

the point i'm trying (and failing) to make is that i think it's important for people to look at all of the options available to them and try whatever they want.
you're probably right about there not being different types of "learners" and i originally put the word in quotes to try and illustrate that it's a pretty pseudo-scientific way to describe individualism in self-study.
i don't think there's any catch-all method to learning something as enormous as a whole ass language. and blindly taking the advice of strangers on a canadian food analogy website is no better than strictly following ajatt, (((mia))), or some college courses. people need to be able to think for themselves and come to their own conclusions or they'll never make it.

I don't think RTK is a necessity but I think the best way to learn Kanji is grouping words by Kanji involved in them and not by general word frequency.

The frequency sorting of Core still fucks me up because it swamps you with tons of different Kanji fromt he start.

I picked a different deck that teaches words by grouping them by common Kanji and I learn so much better this way even if the words are often not always the most common ones they're also not particularly outlandish.

The "learn kanas > read novels with hover-over dictionaries" method is designed to make you think in Japanese the fastest way possible. But is pretty hardcore and boring.

The "Learn Kana > Do half or all of VNCore > read yotsuba > read novels" method is made for those who want a softlanding on Japanese.

The "Learn Kana > read Tae Kim > Do Core2k > Read Yotsuba > do VNcore > read novel" method, is made by reddit so brainlets don't feel bad about themselves.

We don't want brainlets here man, you see people over at reddit saying that learning kanas should take you OVER A FUCKING MONTH, when in reality your average non-brainlet person could learn it in a week, and someone with talent could do it in 2-3 days.

this is funny and all but please don't give reddit the honor of being anything but a bunch of textbook and classroom shills who don't understand the purpose of a good manga. the reddit method is like genki 1 -> genki 2 -> structured intermediate aproach -> tobira -> news sites -> ???????? -> novels -> communication practice, which is absolutely absurd.

of course the realdeal method that will work even for absolute brainlets despite being a good method is kana -> half of vncore and tae kim/sakubi/boiro -> manga/wish fulfillment VNs/games/nico/youtube -> conversations and hard literature, so i don't know why you didn't just say so

btw yotsubato is a really bad for an absolute beginner to read, people should rec flying witch or something instead

His comment is literally the result of these replies. Do you just look at someone's post without finding out about what they're replying to? People say this shit all of the time but it's only because they parrot what was said to them without understanding a damn thing about the preperations that need to be made. Not to mention this is advice coming from people who only wish to read japanese, not write it (which is fine). They know no other method other than blindly reading and they give advice based on their faulty method of learning which doesn't include a vital piece to the puzzle that separates natives and foreigners, which can be the learning method. To give advice based on a type of learning that cuts off an entirely essential part of the language ((not literally) writing kanji) is bound to have problems.

So tired of new people who probably have literally never learned a language before getting called brainlets by faggots who only know how to read or probably acted the same way as a beginner, or at least didn't have to because they were spoonfed without needing to ask. Fuck off you illiterate elitist fags.

Not here to prove anything to you on this anonymous imageboard. I'm just here to call out retards on their shit. Guess I struck a nerve, japanese weaboo learner who can't even write the language he's learning? Not that I'm saying it's the best method. It certainly helped me out but I love seeing posters who are probably far behind me in terms of learning despite time learned give advice on how to approach something. On top of being able to actually write it out.

The comparisons to the English language is especially hilarious. Disregarding the 12+ years of input, output, school teaching, etc. But alright.

Well you have to shove part of the learning process in order to make it faster.

You will never EVER learn the same way a native learned. Natives are actually more fluent speaking before they even officially start learning Kanji.

We learn both speaking and reading at the same time, to save time, lots of people also leave stroke orders and writing for later, which is actually better since when you know lots of characters stroke orders will become easy to predict.

But hey, if you want to learn at a native's pace without being already fluent speaking Japanese its your deal. See you in 14 years when you are able to remember a mere 2k Kanji.

Any consumption of the Japanese language is good for learning, and twitter is no exception in that respect. However you have to be careful of twitter in that it's a site design to suck you in and waste time without thinking, by which I mean, if your time on twitter is spent mainly skimming art and just half-assing tweet reading then you really won't get much better from it (to say nothing of English tweets if you follow English people too).

In the end, when it comes to reading practice, nothing comes close to just sitting down with a novel or VN or even manga and just working your way through it, focused purely on the text. Twitter, while a valuable resource, is not a place you should devote much time into. It's a timesink more than anything else. Spending a couple minutes in the morning reading new Japanese tweets then closing it is about the best way to interact with it.

(This also applies on a more meta level in terms of enriching your life; an afternoon spent reading novels or whatnot will be a lot more meaningful and have more lasting impact than an afternoon spent scrolling through tweets).

I explained that that's not what I meant when I said essential. I said that it's an essential PART of the language, not of learning it. The point was that there are people who don't know how to write, which is a large part of the language, parroting useless (At least without context) advice to others. I was annoyed at the arrogance of people who can't even write in a language they're learning. It wasn't that writing is the all-star solution to all japanese problems. I even made sure to tread lightly by saying 'it worked for me', followed by explaining my reasoning for thinking that writing kanji might help.

It could just as well be useless, but that's literally my point. There's no way of knowing whether your methods aren't as good as you think they are. This all stems from me going after people giving their advice as if it's gospel and shitting on the person that rejects it because the adviser has no idea how to approach teaching in any way. It's not the practices themselves that I'm attacking.

>>21306546
>If you think it's misinformation, prove it wrong so the beginners aren't left astray.
How is this similar to saying to prove god exists? I'm not making any claims and I never did. If I did I take it back. I was giving my perspective on the situation rather than providing a solution. What I was doing by saying that was encouraging people reading to make the decision by themselves.

If your positions are so correct then smart people will agree and follow them. I see no problem. You should be able to argue your positions just fine if they're so concrete, right?

I admit that I did make claims that hinted at me believing writing kanji is better objectively. I was being arrogant and I don't agree with that. What I believe is that it has helped me a lot with retention from what I've seen.

But our point is that you can do that while also doing something that helps you learn words faster than you would just coming across them in the wild.
Think about it like this:

In reading only, you learn words about as much as you see them. You only learn at the pace that they are present to you. With the 1,000s of words and combinations in kanji there are bound to be words that you come across more frequently. Not to mention that your choice of media changes what you will hear. By studying kanji individually occasionally while reading you can patch this inevitable hole in your understanding.

I think if anything RTK is rightly dismissed when one doesn't care to be able to write kanji, but even then, again if you do it correctly, you can distinguish one kanji from another which people who don't do RTK or some variation and will always struggle with - and there's a lot of those. Also, once going through RTK, you already know the meaning to A LOT of words, all you have to do then is just learn their reading.

2 the part where you somehow convince yourself that you have only an either or choice when you can just do both by compartmentalizing your priorities. You could put anime at the forefront and use RTK as a supplement to learn a few more words over a certain period
3 Why do they need to be balanced? Prioritize one over the other based onthe pros and cons. It's not that hard. Just don't cut a method of improvement because you stubbornly force yourself to only do one for some weird reason
4 That's my point for studying it along side what you're already doing...

>u cant run before u learn to walk which u cant learn till u spend some time crawling around
Running before you walk is watching anime. Ironically enough. Not that it doesn't help, but I'd assume learning grammar and kanji would be the walking part of the analogy. Then anime as a supplement to solidifying it. Though anime can be used for learning to listen as well as read so I see the point in how it can help, even if you don't understand.

If we're talking about proficiency as a whole, that's paradoxical; you can't not be able to read kanji and claim to be proficient. As to how many one must know is impossible to answer, but I think the joyo kanji are a reasonable standard.
>u see here very often its not the kanji that is the problem its the understanding of that which is not kanji
If you can't read something because you don't know the kanji, then kanji is a problem - multiple problems can exist. If you're a beginner, and want to indulge in native content, then you have at least two problems: 1. You don't understand Japanese grammar, and 2. You can't read Japanese. Doing RTK or some variant gets rid of the second problem MUCH faster than it takes to get rid of the first problem, and speeds up the time it takes to get rid of the first problem.

I guess my post wasn't clear.
I did read and study vocab at the same time as RTK.
But, RTK took me 115 hours to complete (in anki)

Which translates to close to 7000 minutes I could have spent doing something else. In those 7000 minutes I could have watched 160 episodes of anime (3500-4000 minutes) and learnt 3000 words (at a rate of 1 word per minute based on my anki stats)

Now which would be a better use of time, RTK or watching anime/learning cards is a good question which I don't know.

I don't regret doing RTK tho.

>so whats the problem kanji or something else
This is falsely assuming that there can't be multiple problems, or that not knowing kanji can't exist with another problem / other problems one learning Japanese has. If you want to read something, but can't, then not being able to read is necessarily a problem for you.

There's a difference between being patient and wasting your time doing one method (Watching anime) while completely shutting out any other.
>btw ofc u have to get an explanation of the basic moving parts in japanese at some point but that does not have to come first ever because it also doesnt come first in real life language acquisition
You plan on listening until you get it when you can research concept, listen for it, and then solidify your understanding in the process. How the fuck is this even contested? Are you trying to make beginners waste as much time as possible by giving them a plausible method of practice, knowing they'll stunt themselves for absolutely no reason other than 'acquiring it properly'?

You seem to have only a surface level understanding of what seagal is saying with his demonstration. I suggest you stop posting that link.
>whats in a vacuum is ur perception of how people acquire language
That's literally you. You cling to the most basic interpretations and assume that's the only way to approach it when you can do multiple things at once.

>>21307408
Yeah the problem is just prioritizing. There are more benefits to reading than learning kanji individually, but that doesn't mean it doesn't help. It should be used as a secondary learning method, rather than a primary one. At least until you get a firm grasp on reading.

>my point goes back to the simple fact that u can be weak at kanji and still deal with japanese fine but u cant be strong at kanji and be unable to deal with japanese as u will very clearly be unable to do anything
Then I would just revert to my point that it takes MUCH more time coming to understand Japanese than it does being able to read kanji. With RTK you're already more than halfway there because not only do you know what most if not all of the kanji you'll encounter look like, but you'll have a rough understanding of what they mean and immediately know many words that have the kanji. Also that RTK speeds up your learning of the Japanese language (not only in being able to infer meanings of words, and read better faster, but being able to use the language itself to learn more about the language (looking stuff up in Japanese for example, reading dictionaries that actually explain the meanings of words as opposed to just giving you an English equivalent, which sometimes doesn't really do the word justice)).
>i dont disagree in literacy mattering but is it the king of mattering ? no it comes second to the spoken word always
With most people I would say yes, but if you only care about written native materials the spoken language isnt' shit.

I get what you mean, but you could easily look at it the other way around. Even if you do want to consider it debt, which is fine, in the long run, and we're not even talking that far of a long run, the RTKer can pass that of a non-RTKer (for reasons I've already explained).
>can u handle that pressure?
Yes, and many other can. Some people don't, but that doesn't mean they don't have he potential to. It does take dedication though I'm with you there.

Considering the fact that most people are subvocalizers, I can't suppose it must be too comfortable to read through a visual novel or something by coming across words that you only know an English translation for, and then mentally reading conjugations or particles in kana. You seem to have only a surface level understanding of what seagal is saying with his demonstration. I suggest you stop posting that link, as its quite a simple explanation of his argument in its entirety. But if you're so inclined to continue, I would be glad to add that he does have several points he would want me to make concerning his comments.

First of all, I'm not going to argue that seagsal is a conspiracy nut. That would be silly.

Second, his comments are just that. They're not particularly insightful or deep. I don't think what seagal is saying is particularly compelling.

I could go on, but the point he's making is valid. And I would like to think this demonstrates that the media is too busy playing up conspiracy theories, when it may be that they're just reporting in reality what seagal makes more of a comment.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist,

The font I use there is Noto Serif CJK JP which has really nice Latin glyphs as well as Japanese ones.

If you're watching English-subbed anime, then usually the subs will already be styled decently and you can just leave them alone (unlike with Japanese subs where they're almost always either unstyled or styled horribly). If they're not though, which is sometimes the case, or if it's a HorribleSubs release or something, then in that case I'd just again force the same style I use for Japanese subs on them.

It's honestly laughable all of it.
Steven is a hack that barely knows basic Japanese. After he mixed up Japanese and Korean I'm amazed he managed to spit out some Japanese at all. Matt is pretty good for a Japanese learner, but compared to a native he sucks big cocks and if you knew a bit of Japanese you could tell he lacks pretty severely. Still I guess it'll impress the average tard incapable of learning a language.

Decided to play Baldr Sky Dive2 after all, but I'm having trouble getting it to launch. Every time I try, it just asks me to insert the disk, and the crack that came with the version I got from AB doesn't seem to want to work with anything I try it on.
