Occasional reminder that you don't need to understand linguistics to have a valid understanding of language acquisition. It's perfectly valid to share your experiences with other people and make arguments based on incomplete knowledge as long as you don't step into pseudoscience. There are lots and lots of academics and armchair academics out there with strong opinions on things they have faulty understandings of, especially in linguistics. Life ain't a frat house.

Japanese particles are almost all basically postpositions that are called particles because it's unclear whether or not they're binding to the last word of the phrase they attach to.

English has a bunch of prepositions that turn into particles when used in particle verbs, a special type of phrasal verb. It also has a few true particles, called such because they're grammatical function words that don't fall into any clear category and obviously aren't adverbs or conjunctions, like "not" and "to" (infinitive marker).

Yes, learning grammar takes more effort than people usually anticipate though. There's more patterns here than you initially might think.

However sometimes I'm not sure where people draw a distinction between what constitutes specific vocabulary use and a grammar point.

Realistically the most time goes into expanding vocabulary. On average people seem to underestimate grammar and overestimate Kanji in terms of effort and importance.

so why didn't he just make drop down menus that appear on hover under the top links? his design decisions are just so baffling. and the navigation is still wrong because you have some grammar guides placed under "learn" and others under "grammar" for god only knows what reason.

not to mention those redundant, misleading "learn" and "read" links on the landing page. "learn" needs to be changed to "guide" since that's where it actually goes and "read" needs changing to "learning resources" or something since there's more than just manga and books there.

Amazon works fine, havent tried google. You need to make a japanese amazon account and then add a shipping or billing address to that account. But you can just use any old "valid" address, i think i put in the address of Tokyo Tower and it was fine. As long as you buy only digital goods you're good.

Just note that if you use a Kindle you cant quicky swap accounts, so if you have an account from a different country with books on it you need to log out of that, which deletes all your books from your device and is quite a slow process.

Am 5000 cards in after 4.5 months.

But yeah, definitely gets much easier to speed up as you get more comfortable with readings and worry more about meanings. Wouldn't worry too much about it in the beginning. Or even at all unless you take so long it really stops you from immersion.

monolinguals are the worst no matter what language they speak. English monolinguals love to circlejerk about how hard and "crazy" English is to learn, despite no language being inherently more difficult than any other
of course most Japanese are also monolingual cucks despite years of compulsory English education so it behooves them to believe the one language they do speak is somehow special

Depends on the approach. If you already know a handful of words and are not a complete beginner, look it up and read more, you'll encounter it more often and look it up again, and some point you're going to start remembering it. It'll take a while, but you can learn that way.
But if the amount of lookups is way too painful for you to keep reading, then you can put words into anki to memorize them so that you have to look up less. Anki doesn't give you the more natural knowledge of native content though, so it's not recommended to use for a lot of words (speak thousands) because then you have to do so many reviews that you waste way too much time for knowledge that is "synthetic", like maybe you'll have problems recognizing that word outside of Anki and other things like that.

You do actually need extensive reference resources when learning programming. Programming is slow and deliberate, and conscious knowledge is absolutely vital to producing functioning code as a beginner. Without functioning code you can't know whether anything that you've written is remotely correct, and there are things that are objectively right and objectively wrong, unlike natural language. Their structure, syntax, and semantics are also very unusual and unnatural, with edge cases that you're absolutely never going to encounter during natural code reading/writing, that you need to know about in advance from conscious knowledge.

All programmers who have produced enough code to be worth their weight in body fat have run into bugs caused by ambiguous syntax and poorly specified language constructs. You would know this if you had enough experience programming for your opinion to matter.

You need to have a conscious understanding of how the programming language works to understand why things are working incorrectly. You're not going to get by on sheer input and context.

Reading other peoples' code is not a good way to develop a good understanding of how a programming language works. Almost all code ever written is broken in some way, incredibly unidiomatic, or hacked together from copy-pasted boilerplate in an old version of Java. It's nothing like human languages.

Don't get me wrong. CS students who think they're hot shit but have no experience actually programming are much, much worse than someone who taught themselves to program by writing random letters into a text editor and hitting "compile" until things somehow magically worked.

But you'd be lying if you said that you, as an experienced developer, learned to program without ever using something designed to guide beginners into how code in some or another programming language, how it's structured, how it functions, and how common tasks are done. THAT'S what programming textbooks are like. They're nothing like language textbooks.

>>21182521
I am an actual experienced software dev. The person I replied to is a novice who thinks they're hot shit for googling the basics for several months instead of reading a tutorial for a week.

People who have a poor conscious understanding of the language they're programming in write very buggy slow code, because they have no idea what the language is actually doing with the statement they construct. This isn't a human language where things basically mean something along the lines of what they mean. Things are rigid and all the tiny obtuse edge cases actually matter.

Is your array getting copied or referenced when you run a for loop over it? Not you! What the fuck is a reference? Not like you'd know!

Of course, these particular things would not be explained in "JS For Beginners", but they're defined out there somewhere, in some reference material, in a rigid and objective form. And you have no choice but to read that reference material eventually, or have things explained to you in a deliberate and logical way by someone who has. Reference material is just the final form of beginner's tutorials.

And nobody is ever going to learn a language like Rust without wracking their brain against a logical description of what borrow-checking is for several weeks.

Also, I never said it's hard at all. Unlike natural languages, conscious knowledge is actually useful when you're programming, and it turns into an intuition much more quickly. That doesn't mean that it's reasonable to learn to program by reading other peoples' authentic code (not examples, those count as tutorials) and trying to imitate it. fuck those guys man.they all have their heads up their asses. the truth is the question of how to go about vocab study is one of the most debated topics in japanese and perhaps language learning in general. the process of making and studying anki cards certainly works to move at least general definitions of words into your long term memory, which can then increase your ability to read comfortably and understand more. the problem occurs when making and studying those cards starts taking more time than you spend just consuming native material. thats why many here recommend only 5 to 10 minutes of anki a day, using the rest of your time for input. You can learn around 300 new words a month with 5 to 10 minutes a day.

You need a reference. It doesn't matter what it is. It can be a textbook. It can be google. It can be some random Indian teenager's blog.

It doesn't matter.

It's not like Japanese where entire categories of resources are pointless or bad. It's not a mistake for someone to decide to read a textbook.

If you don't read what things actually do then you don't actually understand what your code is doing. You have to learn what things actually do. You can do it whenever you want, but you can do it whenever you want, even at the very beginning.

You can sit down and read the a literary adaptation of Common Lisp or Scheme before you write a single character of code and you'll be just fine. It won't do you any harm and you'll learn a lot of useful lessons.

This is not true of Japanese, where intuition is the only thing that matters.

Consider this a lesson on how programmers learn to program being a bad example when it comes to learning something different like Japanese.

Keisei moji (形声文字)
Keisei (Mandarin: xíngshēng) characters are phono-semantic or radical-phonetic compounds, sometimes called "semantic-phonetic", "semasio-phonetic", or "phonetic-ideographic" characters, are by far the largest category, making up about 90% of the characters in the standard lists; however, some of the most frequently used kanji belong to one of the three groups mentioned above, so keisei moji will usually make up less than 90% of the characters in a text. Typically they are made up of two components, one of which (most commonly, but by no means always, the left or top element) suggests the general category of the meaning or semantic context, and the other (most commonly the right or bottom element) approximates the pronunciation. The pronunciation relates to the original Chinese, and may now only be distantly detectable in the modern Japanese on'yomi of the kanji; it generally has no relation at all to kun'yomi. The same is true of the semantic context, which may have changed over the centuries or in the transition from Chinese to Japanese. As a result, it is a common error in folk etymology to fail to recognize a phono-semantic compound, typically instead inventing a compound-indicative explanation.
a phonetic component, also called "rebus", Japanese 音符 (onpu), that is, a character with approximately the correct pronunciation.
a semantic component, also called a determinative, one of a limited number of determinative characters which supplied an element of meaning (in most cases this is also the radical under which a character is listed in a dictionary).
As in ancient Egyptian writing, such compounds eliminated the ambiguity caused by phonetic loans (above).

This process can be repeated, with a phono-semantic compound character itself being used as a phonetic in a further compound, which can result in quite complex characters, such as 劇 (豦 = 虍 + 豕, 劇 = 刂 + 豦).

Often, the radical is to the left, but there are many possible combinations, see Shape and position of radicals.

But you keep improving, gradually, over time, the more time you spend, as long as you don't spend all your time doing things that are truly useless like collecting studying materials or arguing on Reddit. Eventually you start actually getting good. And then you realize how valuable the practice you've put in really is.

There isn't much point in learning 1000 kanji because kanji study methods generally are generally ordered by radicals instead of usefulness. If you learn 1000 kanji from a kanji deck, you will know a bunch of common and a bunch of rare kanji, and you will still miss a ton of extremely common and necessary kanji.

In other words, if you learn 1000 kanji, you still won't be able to read anything.
If you want to do kanji study, you either learn the ~2200 general use kanji in one go or don't bother at all. It's a dumb analogy, but it's like learning the English letters from 'a' to 'k' and trying to read a story.

I wouldn't be obsessing about pitch if I was that new, and I could careless about proving myself to you, but I got a quiz for you, which one of these three is not a japanes proverb:
a)塵も積もれば山となる
b)猿も木から落ちる
d)出る釘は打たれる

Lmao is the trick here supposed to be that you wrote 釘 instead of 杭 or are you asking me about fucking origin?
Anyway chances are you if you can't prove yourself in a quiz you are a beginner. There is absolutely no risk to your anonymity and it doesn't even take a minute. I'm sensing you are just full of shit.
I listened to the matt debate stream thing because someone was going to do a joke question, but I heard plenty of those pitch retards talking. All of them sub N5 shitters, one frenchie with the worst fucking English accent comes in and talks about motherfucking pitch in Japanese. Jesus, people putting prioritizing this shit to actually learning Japanese is insane.

every time you would leave for a few hours and then come back saying "just some friendly competition! :))" and then immediately revert back to "lmao u guys fuckin suck at flashcards" like no you're a negative energy, you make the other posters itt negative, and i dont like you acting out like this. tell me what's on your mind dude work it out

I wouldn't shit the thread up if it wasn't already a shitpost dumping ground. It's been nothing but shitposting for months and judging from your posting style you are a contributor. Don't lecture people about shitting up threads when you continue to push the idea that it's fine to shit in here like it's a chatroom. By the way, you can say whatever you want about the quiz just being flashcards, but if you can't read the words in the quiz you can't read Japanese. That's a fact. In that sense it's a good tool to determine if people are full of shit or not, and this thread is more than full of shit. It's not a place to ask advice on and that is thanks to beginners like you interpreting this is your shitting ground and chasing away everyone who does actually know some Japanese from occasionally checking the thread because nobody wants to read the endless stream of drivel that you and your buddies produce. Especially not productive people.
If you want to know more about me, I was one of the people calling for more moderation some months ago and created a /qa/ thread with the decline of DJT on /jp/ as the topic and asking for intervention. If you haven't notice, you can shitpost pretty much whatever you like in here and won't get deleted. This thread is practically ignored by the /jp/ moderators and I'd honestly prefer if it was deleted off the board by now.
As it is though, don't talk shit to me about shitting in here, bitch.

you don't know about whether or not i'm a "beginner" and your entire post hinges on that assumption so i'm not really interested in what you have to say. beginners asking beginner questions and being responded to by other beginners is what this thread has always been, with the exception of the handful of people who have actually learned japanese and then decided not to stick around because, why would they?
anyway, i make good posts and contribute all the time, help people when i can (mostly only by guiding them towards resources), and contribute quality posts. you being mad that i'm not bothering to capitalize in my posts isn't going to change the fact that it's not worth the fucking effort. and as i said, you only bring bad vibes and bad energy to this thread, which you couldn't even bother proving me wrong about. people itt wouldn't tell you to fuck off all the time if you weren't like that. i even want to try the kanji quiz and would've by now if you hadn't come out swinging the way you did, but you're so aggressive that i don't want to interact at all lmfao

I'm obviously a beginner. But when I want to ask something more serious, I try to do it in Japanese. Outputting nihonho more or less reveals how bad you are. So if you want a more serious side in the same thread, try using Japanese. It's more effort, but it's fun too. Also, since you don't like Japanese culture in particular... aren't you making a mistake dealing with Japanese at all? If you don't love something about the language and people that are inextricably linked, I can't see how this thread can make you happy. That is to say, perhaps it would make you mad in any case.

It's an interjection. One the surface level it's "that's pretty impressive" but if you analyze it deeper a more accurate interpretation might be "that's pretty mundane but I'll pretend to be impressed with what you are saying because you seem pretty enthusiastic about it, but I don't really care much".
