This link should also be thrown somewhere under the dictionaries bit of the resources guide as well.

Speaking of the guide, the whole guide + resources guide could really do with an update. I don't think there have been any notable revisions to either in the last two years and a lot of stuff in there doesn't really reflect the current attitude or approach of the threads at all. The resources guide needs updating mostly to add new stuff which wasn't around whenever the last update was made.

Hello everyone. I’m a self-studier for about 2 years but honestly I’m not even at N5 level (still at chapter 8 of Genki 1).

I was wondering, those who take formal classes, what does your classroom curriculum usually contain? What do you do each lesson? I can’t seem to find the balance between learning grammar, vocabulary and kanji. I’m okay with grammar but I’m at a loss with vocabulary. In formal classes, do you usually do a bit of everything or...?

Also, anyone who has gone to Japan to do intensive study, what was the curriculum like for you as well?

I have a 2 week break coming soon and I’d like to spend it seriously sitting down and studying (I’m sick of not doing much even at about 2 years). So, I’d appreciate any advice and information about normal classes so at least I have some structure to my self study :) Thank you!

How is a year not a reasonable amount of time? This is not RTK 1. It doesn't do dubious Keyword - Kanji only.

If you really go through the content in a year, which is possible, you will have 2000 Kanji + most common on and kun readings + 6000 vocabulary items.

If people would actually do that, I would say they are on a good pace to actually get somewhere after a year. It's not like some of those language learning apps giving you hiragana and katakana over half a year with romaji all over.

Yea you can have it for free and faster. Free makes sense, faster highly depends on how much time you can dedicate to it. Even with using free resources, almost no one will be able to do RTK + Core6k in 7 months assuming they have other responsibilities, even if they can it's already well into Ankidrone territory and you should better slow done and do more reading instead. i hate to admit it but i'm realizing that pitch accent does matter... even if you don't care about speaking, having it as a salient thing in your subconscious will help so much with listening raw and catching things more easily

its the same reason why people speaking japanese-english take so much more effort to understand. they emphasize the wrong places (and fail to emphasize the right ones) and it doesn't match what our aural language centers (for english native speakers) are used to hearing, thus taking more time to process

and thats the same thing thats happening when we've memorized incorrect pitch accents for words (likely while reading) and then try to listen for them in native audio. the aural patterns we have stored are not the same as whats coming in with the native input we're listening to, so it takes so much more effort to hear the words, even if we "know them", than it would if we knew their correct pitch accents too

that being said i don't think i'm going to start looking up diagrams and shit. i noticed this pitch accent stuff just from an experiment i did where i listened to an anime clip while trying to be very aware of any pitch changes within and among words. i surprisingly had so many moments of "oh shit i never realized the pitch accent was like that for this word or this one or this one". that feeling of "woah" probably means my brain is picking up something new, those subtle patterns. so i'm just gonna keep listening out for them now anytime i do something with listening (anime, voiced VNs, podcasts, audiobooks), and perhaps doing some shadowing with it too and see where that gets me.

uhhh no theres literally changes in the tones of particular words if you listen carefully and its not random, it follows patterns. that's the whole point, being conscious of those patterns so they become natural for you any time you hear those same words, in your head or externally.

you listen to a word. the pitch is different in one syllable vs the next. you notice what the difference sounds like. you internalize the correct sounds and stop making mistakes when you read in your head. this makes future listening comprehension easier as well.

Translators sell you that kuso means shit. Which means, that kuso is a huge bad word that should not be ever said. That's how they sell it to you.
What I believe is: these translations are forced. Kuso doesn't really mean shit. it can't be translated. Bad words are bad words, for a reason, you either use them or not. If they sell me that the word kuso means shit, then that's pretty bullshit, because it doesn't really mean shit

also
>Japanese doesn't words
BULLSHIT.
Say, you, a human person, finding yourself in a hurry or bad situation: your hand got burnt, you're getting late to work and you can't get into the bus, or there is some crazy fight/shit that could harm you or kill you (a fight, a shooter, etc). What do you say? a bad word > this is what a curse word is. A word you say in unexpected situations

That's because the itazurneko site is a mess. It's a grammar guide, yet it's put under the "learn" section under "anon curated guides" (along with two other grammar guides, one of which wasn't even made by an Anon but by a well known member of the VN translation scene many years ago) instead of the grammar section.

https://itazuraneko.neocities.org/learn/anon/boiro.html

This isn't the only problem with the "learn" section. When you navigate to the main page of itazuraneko, you're greeted with the options "learn japanese" and "read japanese". Clicking on "read" takes you to the library section, which is all well and good. Clicking on "learn", however, takes you not to the learn section of the site but instead to the DJT guide page. Since the DJT guide is a subpage of the learn section though, while you're on this page the "learn" link at the top left will be highlighted which gives you the impression that you've been taken straight to the "learn" page when in fact you haven't. Unless you click that "learn" button at the top (which it feels unnatural to do since highlighted buttons like that are often unclickable, and are indeed unclickable on certain pages of the itazuraneko site itself), you'd never know there was anything else contained in that section.

While I'm complaining, another stupid part of the site design is how the "home" and "feedback" buttons switch places depending on what page you're on, and while you'd usually always expect the "home" button to appear at the top left corner of the page, on itazuraneko it's instead on the far right end of the nativation bar somewhere near the top-middle of the page.

I don't know why the author had to keep autistically fucking with the site design so much. Every change just turned it into more and more of a mess. IIRC, he quit DJT in large part due to not being able to handle people telling him this.

Fuck you could've looked it up by radical and stroke count. 口 radical plus 9 strokes. Fuck, you could just browse the index for that radical and find it pretty quickly.

Seriously, pic related is all the 12-stroke characters with a 口 radical in Japanese. It's right there in the third row, just look for the 世 component if it doesn't leap out at you.

口,世,and 禾 are like three of the most basic characters to write, and that's all this character is made from.

Actually to be really precise most of those characters in that chart do not have a 口 radical. For some reason Jisho lists them there, but shit like 硬, 距, 貼, 智 (!!!), 絡 (!!!!) are not 口 radical. The list in my go-to Chinese dictionary for 口-plus-nine-strokes is a little over 50 characters. This one is 140 characters. But at a glance you can tell the overwhelming majority don't have a 口 in the radical position.

The top and right side are drawn as a single stroke, in a single motion. It's just something you have to memorize. Virtually always when there's a character with a box of some kind in it, two of the sides are drawn as a single stroke. So 国,中,日,月,学, and countless others, you round one of the corners in a single stroke.

All kanji are made up of radicals and the non-radical portion (which in Chinese can convey some phonetic information). The radical tends to have some semantic importance. Ones with 口 (mouth), for instance, tend to deal with speech or sound.

As a result of the systemization of kanji centuries ago, every one has a radical, and that radical can be used to index the characters.

Recognizing the radical isn't too hard. It's almost always on the left side of the character. Less often it's on the top of the character. Even less often it's on the bottom. Very rarely, it's on the right side. You can tell it's the radical usually because the character component takes up that entire "side" of the box the kanji fills.

喋 has a (stretched) 口 taking up the left side, and two other components on the right that have roughly equal vertical space. Neither of those is likely to be the radical because neither is the leftmost, topmost, bottommost, or rightmost component. (though 世 has portions of its strokes that go above the 口, and 木 has portions below the 口, they're close enough that they're considered to "share" the top/bottom with 口).

茶 has a top radical. 意 has a bottom radical. 那 has a right radical, though you could easily think it has a left radical (I actually didn't realize until I looked it up just now).

Here's what she says afterwards, which, if I understood correctly, is something along the lines "Nah, it's because I'm bent on doing this, but I wouldn't be doing it if it wasn't for the sake of my boyfriend". It looks as if she's explaining the true reason for why she's doing the paizuri (implying she was joking previously, like >>21164293 said, I also think this because she adds that "nee" at the end, plus I recall her liking to make jokes in the game she's from).

Nazeka technically supports epwing dictionaries if you compile https://github.com/wareya/nazeka_epwing_converter and run shinmeikai or kenkyuusha's zero_epwing ( https://github.com/FooSoft/zero-epwing ) versions through it.

I'll upload an actual binary once it supports daijirin or daijisen. Until then compiling rust projects is incredibly easy compared to other languages, to the point where you can do it with zero programming knowledge. You just install rust then run cargo run --release or cargo build --release from a terminal and it takes care of absolutely everything on its own. I don't expect you to bother, just posting this in case it's the one thing keeping someone lurking from switching.

It's faster. If you draw random parts of random radicals in a random order then it's slower than drawing each radical individually. It also helps a lot to start in the top left and to have a consistent order for which radicals you draw first. Aside from that, the specifics of stroke order don't matter at all unless you're scribbling, as demonstrated by the fact that different regions have different standard stroke orders. It's a lot less cognitive load. Or do you write words starting at the last letter?

Download the KanjiStrokeOrders font and install it, that way you don't have to look kanji up in a dictionary to get the stroke order.
Otherwise, many dictionaries like jisho have also stroke orders for kanji.
I'm pretty sure that there are some apps that teach kanji with stroke order, but I don't use any of these. On the windows app store there's Kakitai, which lets you train kanji by writing and can also display stroke order if you want.

Those all start in the top left, or somewhere else across the top. The "top left" rule is just a simplification of a deeper intuition that gives you both the "top left" and "outside" rules anyways. You're not going to have perfect stroke order if you don't check each individual character, that's silly, the point is that once you have an intuition for it then the specifics don't matter unless Japanese people have the same standards for you as they do for other Japanese people, or you're trying to pass a writing accuracy contest of some kind.

Yes, it has two levels of stripping for shinmeikai and three levels of stripping for kenkyuusha.

Shinmeikai, examples:
"(略)",
"(一)アジア。",
"「中央―[5]」",
"(二)アフリカ。",
"「南ナン―」",
"(三)(日本)アルプス。",
"「南ナン―〔=赤石山脈〕連峰」",
"[表記](一)は「亜」、(二)は「〈阿」とも書く。"
Shinmeikai, no examples:
"(略)",
"(一)アジア。",
"(二)アフリカ。",
"(三)(日本)アルプス。",
"[表記](一)は「亜」、(二)は「〈阿」とも書く。"
Kenkyuusha/wadai, no stripping:
"〔驚き・意外・感動の時の発声〕 Oh!; O dear!; Good(ness) gracious!; (Good) heavens!; Good God!; 〔痛み・熱さ〕 Ouch!; Ow! [あっと]",
"►あっ, 帽子を忘れた. Oh! I've forgotten my hat!",
"・あっ, 財布がない. Oh! My wallet's gone!",
"・あっ, 富士山が見えるよ. Look! You can see Mt. Fuji!",
"・あっ, 雨だ. Oh, it's started to rain! | Oh look! It's raining.",
"・あっ, しまった! Oh dear! | Bother! | Damn! | Hell! | 《卑》 Shit [Fuck]!"
Kenkyuusha/wadai, light stripping:
"〔驚き・意外・感動の時の発声〕 Oh!; O dear!; Good(ness) gracious!; (Good) heavens!; Good God!; 〔痛み・熱さ〕 Ouch!; Ow! [あっと]",
"►あっ, 帽子を忘れた. Oh! I've forgotten my hat!"
Kenkyuusha/wadai, heavy stripping:
"〔驚き・意外・感動の時の発声〕 Oh!; O dear!; Good(ness) gracious!; (Good) heavens!; Good God!; 〔痛み・熱さ〕 Ouch!; Ow! [あっと]"

Kenkyuusha/wadai is a bit special (read: shitty) in that some words don't actually have any definitions, just examples after a description (in Japanese) of what sense of that word that example is for, like this (no stripping):
"1 〔問いに答えて〕",
"►「お父さん, あれなあに」「ああ, あれは灯台だよ」 \"What is that, Daddy?\"―\"Oh, it is a lighthouse.\"",
"2 〔気軽な肯定・承諾〕",
"►「これ借りていいですか」「ああ, いいよ」 \"Can I borrow this?\"―\"Yes, all right [《口》 Yeah, OK].\"",
"・「眠くないか」「ああ, 眠くない」 \"Aren't you sleepy?\"―\"No, I'm not.\"",
"3 〔生返事〕",
"►「パパ, 早く来て」「ああ, 今行くよ」 \"Daddy! Come quickly!\"―\"OK [All right], I'm coming.\"",
"4 〔言いよどむとき〕",
"►ああ, まあ, そのことなら, まあ, たぶん, 調査して, 後刻ご返事をさしあげられると思いますよ. Er…, well…; as far as that matter is concerned…perhaps…er, perhaps I could look into it and let you have an answer later."
With "heavy stripping", that looks like this:
"1 〔問いに答えて〕",
"2 〔気軽な肯定・承諾〕",
"3 〔生返事〕",
"4 〔言いよどむとき〕"
hence there being three stripping levels for it.

You know where to go based on the individual radical you start with. Once you try writing 𠂆 a few times you realize it starts at the "top" instead of the "top left"; but even then it's the "top left radical" so it's still part of that rule.

I know that a few characters have irregular radical stroke orders but nobody's gonna fault you for getting them wrong in the real world, unless they're the kind of person who nitpicks everything they think is slightly wrong.

本当に唐突だし、まったくもってどうでもいいコトなんだけど。
I've been playing (reading?) flyable heart and it's super appropriate for beginners like me. Above is a sentence that I have struggled to understand for a while now, but google searches have filled in some of the blanks.だし is somewhat interchangeable with だから and I believe in this context it means "because, so, therefore". もって has many meanings but in this context I believe it is adding emphasis to 全く, so I'd guess this pairing means something like 全然. どうでもいい is an expression that is similar to "whatever" in English, but since I'm not familiar with how the pairing of Japanese words dou demo ii are meant to convey indifference, I could be missing some nuance here. コト is probably the standard meaning as an intangible thing/what. Apparently なんだけど is a very common way to end casual sentences and sometimes it's like an empassioned/angry だ rather than as a sentence combiner like you might see with (が、だが、でも、けれども、しかし). If any of you can help out I'd really appreciate it.

The Chinese symbol for China is a box with a vertical line through its center. This stands for "middle", as in referring to "the Middle Kingdom". Middle in this case doesn't refer to geography, but instead to, in Chinese consciousness, to the Chinese being in the middle of all sentient life forms. The gods on top, the Chinese are in the middle, and everyone else (that's us, folks) is at the bottom. White, black, red, green, blue, it doesn't matter: Gods, Chinese, barbarians. That's the natural order, according to what the Chinese have believed for 5000 years.

Has anyone had luck with the Core 2K deck, and how to set it up for a beginner?

context is the only way to know if it is tree o spirit

don't use kana, anyway I hope this is a troll.
recognize what word it is based on the kanji. the goal is to remember the reading+meaning of the word.

1. Suck butt, can't understand shit
2. Hear/read words you occasionally know
3. Start to understand basic conversation
4. Start to follow basic plot of your media
5. Get excited cause you just might make it

So the months do have actual names? I think that is much more interesting than jsut calling them one, two, three..

well actually they don’t match up perfectly with the regular months anyway... so they're not exactly interchangeable

I stopped doing anki last month. I think that had something to do with it. I usually get 80-90% retention and today I was getting 22.3%. I also got bored of watching/reading the easy stuff and found out the harder stuff is infinitely harder.
