I've always been fond of house spirits and benevolent yokai like Zashiki Warashis. Ghosts in general, too. Concept-wise, though, probably the Okuri Inu/Following Dogs, since they embody everything I like about Japanese monsters: eerie, not inherently evil and can be thwarted with general politeness.

I like inugami because of their portrayal in anime and especially the longdogs in SMT.

Aren't Inugami the severed head, hungry dogs that you create as part of a curse by burying and starving them to death? That doesn't sound particularly cute.

They become cuter after they become ghost doggos and not rotting zombies. But I like them because they are cool, not because I want to fuck them.

I like Kappa. Kappa used to be heavily featured on the tons of 80s and 90s anime shows that used to air in my home country so I grew up being fond of them.

That page is from yokai.com. It's one of the best-organized websites I've seen about youkai. I don't know about the accuracy.

I like the modern urban legend ones who are arguably maybe not youkai.
Mary-san has some fun nuances.
But from older youkai, my favorites are the karakasa and zashiki warashi.

What's a good way of learning all the youkais?

Are there books specifically directed at that? Should I learn them in Japanese?
Or is the bruteforce approach better (playing 99 different games with youkai and mixing their knowledge)?

I really like these things, but I can't do things without having lists.

Yokai.com >>21101411 is fun for light reading/familiarizing with some monster concepts on a well-organized, but it's mostly heavily made-up by the website's author and poorly researched. That's mostly because a lot of yokai simply don't have much to them other than a story or two (if they're lucky), or an obscure image that was part of one of the many ghost story collections.

For something which takes a bit more work to read through, there was a great A-Z of Japanese mythology .pdf floating around /tg/ which really does a good job compiling many monsters and concepts, and more importantly giving sources on where to read up more about them. I'll see if I can find it.

Couldn't find the exact version I'd read, but this one's pretty good at compiling some of the famous names/concepts too:
http://www.enryo.ro/carti/Japanese%20mythology%20A%20to%20Z.pdf

And a few more recommendable books on shintoism and associated folklore:
Japanese Gods and Myths - Rebecca Kingsley.
Folktales from the Japanese Countryside - Hiroko Fujita.
Shinto Norito - Ann Evans.

Almost 400 of them, woah.
I was thinking about making an Anki deck with all their names and pictures, so I can read their stories and keep them fresh in my memory, with the bonus of practicing their names in kanji (I'm learning Japanese).

But I don't know... maybe I should read them in Japanese for the extra study. Problem being I'm in a spot where I'm afraid to miss details if I just jump into native material.

Maybe this is all autistic, but I'd like to hear your opinion. Do you have some examples of the dude being off or making up shit about a youkai?

Also I just scavenged my old hard drive, someone had recommended me this book a while ago, but I didn't get to it.

Downloading what you sent and looking up the other titles. Thank you very much.

Since you seem knowledgeable in the subject already, instead of a youkai, have a concept:
https://jisho.org/search/engacho
It shows up in Chihiro when she steps on the sludge monster that was inside of Haku, Kamaji breaks it off.

What he'll often do is embellish for the sake of entertainment, or make things up on the fly where there are gaps to have some sort of logical sense.

Take, for instance, pic related: Taka Onna. It appeared in the Hyakki Yagou, one of the major yokai picture/story publications. There's no description or caption on the original picture, just a long woman on what appears to be a brothel's balcony. That's it. Some figured it was a parody, some later invented a separate legend for it. Point is, the only thing to this monster originally was just this picture, nothing else. The yokai.com page kind of hides this fact by making up its own story, borrowing from that posthumous legend and adding some of its own flair. If you were to go by the website's story alone, you'd assume Taka-onna was some well-known monster, when in reality it could just be a funny caricature for all we know.

There's nothing exactly wrong with how the website tackles the subject matter, since it's meant to entertain (like many of these stories were originally intended to). Personally, I prefer something a bit more academic and upfront when it comes to folklore, that tells more about the story behind how some monsters come to be rather than just what the monsters are.
