What differentiates a beginner from an expert is the following:

1) Knowledge of all the hands, this is pure memorization and nothing else... the more you remember the more options you can 'go' for.

2) Ability to read discards... This is why mahjong is a game of skill and not luck, even though luck is factored in it is a tiny factor. Mahjong is a 'game of discards'. Experts are able to tell within 4 or 5 discards exactly what you're going for as there are ONLY 74 tiles in the pool. Once 20 tiles have been discarded in total, the picture becomes pretty clear if you're an expert.

3) Like poker, you need a poker face to go with #2 and the ability to bluff.

#1 takes very little effort... just commit the hands to memory. #2 and #3 can take an entire lifetime depending on how gifted you are with this sort of thing.

That's true and it's even a pretty good explanation for the self-hatred she would need to feel to commit suicide. Also, you can't necessarily say that the Erika on the boat isn't closer to her past self than the one we see on Rokkenjima. There's already a case of being "reborn" after a drowning in the story.

The Erika in the boyfriend flashback is also entirely out of character, she is very different from the one we see in Rokkenjima, so it would be possible that she finally got over it after falling off the boat and making a pact with Bern to become a witch of truth
She is just too similar to Ange to not raise doubts about why she fell off the boat

Since no one didn't met Erika before someone else could use her identity. It's even hinted by Lambda. That's why piece Erika resembles Bern - her master could give her any form she wants because Erika hadn't no appeareance. My best guess is Bern gave the drowned Erika the detective proclamation and Lambda played along. She also gave herself the detective title in the scene where Battler is knocked back by Erika. In other words EP5's Erika could be the culprit in the detective disguise.

It's infuriating how Higurashi is the only 07thExpansion novel with an official translation and it's the worst translation by far.

Umineko, Higanbana ans RGD were translated by fans and yet the translations were pretty much perfect. Meanwhile, the lazy fucks at Mangagamer got their hands on Higurashi and fucked it up in every way possible, while getting paid for it. Typos out the ass, crashes, wrong music, censorship, translation errors, missing credits sequences. Not to mention that they take years to release each chapter and they still come out full of typos.
