Yeah Bancov's a god. the translation is a good 9,5/10, way, way better than 90% of japanese games translated in french. Only grip with it is that he changed Rika's "Nipah" with "Miaou" for some reason but otherwise everything's pretty much perfect, to the point that every game/vn french translation looks stale in comparison.

My biggest objection to Will is that his constant "think of the motive" feels like a stumbling point of the series. All the tricks, deceptions, and accidents are presented skilfully, but the (important) motives don't feel like things I could figure out from the question episodes.

It's right at the end of the story, and suddenly a character shows up and points a really big finger at the weakest part of it, so it's easy to transfer some dislike to that character. I guess it was meant to prepare me for the "it's not a mystery, it's a tragedy, and it happened this way because the cast enjoy mysteries" argument. Or maybe I still don't understand.

Literally the only flaw of Umineko and Higurashi is that the credits scroll way too fast. It's not that bad in Umineko, but the Higurashi EP8 credits are literally impossible to read completely unless you take a screenshot.

I already read Higurashi a couple of times, but both of Mangagamer's translations have been sloppy and feel more like throwaway translations, far from perfect. It feels bad to only be able to read it in English, since the translation is so mediocre.

The little I've managed to read of the French translation is pretty damn good. The localized wordplay is clever as fuck so far. "Le SANGlot des cigales" is a pretty good way to give the title a double meaning. I think "Minagoroshi" was localized as "the final resolution" or something like that, which is pretty clever too. It sounds like it's referring to the fact that it's an answer arc but it's actually referring to the plan to kill all the villagers if something goes wrong with Rika.

Ryuukishi confirmed that his characters are all actors and that the Higurashi All Cast Review Sessions are the highest level of meta. But which characters are supposed to be played by the same actor? So far, the only semi-confirmed ones are:

Furude Rika - Bernkastel

Tanashi Miyoko (as a child) - Lambdadelta

Ushiromiya Battler - Philip Butler

Okonogi Tetsuro (Higurashi )- Okonogi Tetsuro (Umineko) - Maurice Mononobe

Sakutaro - Sakunoshin (some people suspect that the same actor played Houjou Satoshi, but maybe they just look similar).

All the ages match up. Miyoko and Rika are 10-11, while Lambda and Bern appear to be around 13 or 14. Butler is played by the same actor as Battler after 5 years or so.

I suspect that Tomita (that one kid from Higurashi who got bribed by K1 in every chapter) eventually got his big role as Nonomiya Takeshi in Higanbana. He did a pretty good job, he's one of my favorite characters in the novel.

"Nomura" from Higurashi and Hachijo Ikuko are OBVIOUSLY the same actress. You can see her face in the manga and the anime, and she's identical to Ikuko. She plays a big role in both stories but her characters are always manipulating shit behind the scenes.

Meryl and Stella in RGD are obviously an intentional reference to Lambda and Bern. Same with Yukari and "Reiko" in Higanbana. But they are obviously different actresses with completely different faces, and they aren't even supposed to be incarnations of those witches in-universe or anything of the sort. It's just a reference, it doesn't mean anything.

It's possible that Renoir the youkai also played the weird EP7 Manga version of Yasu.

"Lion" never existed in the real world, Natsuhi fucked him up and turned him into Yasu. His world and every possible timeline he exists in as "Lion" are all imaginary and trapped in the catbox ANYWAY. Lion's world can only end in tragedy because that's what happened IRL. He's a fantasy that gets overwritten by the reality of what actually happend on the island.

That's why Will tells Lion to "resist" and not acknowledge the fact that s/he was shot in the chest, even though it would make no sense for any other character. This version of Lion is not bound to any particular world, s/he is literally FANTASY and has the potential to ignore reality, the whole catbox shit and what happens at the end of each fragment.

Any other character, including the gameboard pieces or someone like meta-battler, has to accept the fact that they can't live past October 6, because the catbox situation ends after the second day and there is only one result: the island exploded. But Lion is different, because he's a fantasy version of Yasu existing in a perfect fantasy world where everything is perfect. He's not tied to reality and doesn't have to accept Bern's shit. He can live beyond that day and have the happy life that Yasu desired, just like all the other fantasy creatures have their own worlds and lives. He can even be of either gender, unlike the "real" Lion/Yasu.

Will says it himself near the end of EP7. Bern is trying to apply mystery logic to a fantasy world. She is trying to lock Lion's world up inside the catbox, tricking Lion into thinking he belongs there. But once he realizes the truth, he doesn't have to deal with any of that shit and can live on. At least until EP8 when all the fantasy creatures on Rokkenjima are put in danger.

Well the moon is, funnily enough, associated with Jessica. As much as Kanon goes on about milady shining like the sun.

I suppose the symbolism there would be Kanon is the sun, and Jessica is just a reflection of his own brightness?

Well, Kanon is the only one of the Yasu personas with love in it. (Yoshiya, in addition to being a Jesus name, has "ai" in it)

Jessica's association with the moon also ties into the theme of illusion. In that moonlight is an illusion, it's just a reflection of the sun.

But then again, the moon itself isn't an illusion. You can see it during the day.
