Post the last 3 things you've read.
-Konosuba vol. 2 (pretty damn easy if you've already mined the vocab from vol. 1)
-Mushishi vol. 1 (has some weird archaic vocab, but the cover art and binding are amazing)

Day 6 - Less Anki and Less Laziness
Today hasn't been all that great for Chinese. Today I got really lazy and just didn't immerse much at all nor work on pinyin as much as I should have. However, I think I'm going to hold off on anki for a bit and just focus on hammering it down and fine some useful videos on YouTube.

I am seeing myself fall into the trap of "I'll do this tomorrow", but then I say the same thing tomorrow. So, in order to get back on track with what I need to do, I finally finished adding all of my tasks in habitica. Now I feel more motivated to get things done and not let myself die over and over again lol.

Tomorrow will be a much better day. I'm going to get off of the phone at night and go to bed. And I am going to wake up early in the morning and start my day off right.

Been "learning" Japanese for two years now. My production is still super trash to the point I still don't feel comfortable writing this post in Japanese.. i have been just playing vn's (nukige) and reading eromanga intermixed with a bit of core6k, but no new words so basically just reviewing the 4.2k~ cards I've viewed. my reading really isn't bad, mainly based on my innate ability to understand the dialogue. I really only ever cared for djt guide and what it espoused as far as learning methods. Haven't been here in years, can someone advise me on what I should be doing to get back into the swing of things at a rigorous/academic level?

tl;dr pls spoonfeed me advice, I've lost a lot of drive since the only thing I use Japanese for I can do well

How nice the thread I decide to post in has my waifui for the OP !

Hi. I don't know japanese. I just learned about "Yojijukugo" (4 character compounds). I was wondering how possible it is to modify an existing one and have the new one have a meaning that will be immediately understood.

For example, there's this one I like: 人馬一体. It means unity of a horse and its rider. If I change the second character so that it is 人剣一体 will it mean "unity of a weapon and its wielder" or will people just go like "what the fuck does that made up thing mean?"?

Thanks.

But this makes zero sense. The benefits of RTK are that you get to learn vocab much easier because you can instantly recognise any kanji and know what it means. >you get to learn vocab much easier because you can instantly recognise any kanji and know what it means
It's not true that doing RTK will allow you to instantly recognize all the kanji it covers. But anyway, just read and mine vocab and you'll grow accustomed to the kanji without having to do RTK, and you'll be more motivated to continue since you're learning the language and consuming interesting material.

Maybe doing the 500 most frequent kanji using the lazy kanji method is a good idea, but RTK is stupid.

Incorrect. Anything you can produce from scratch you can also recognise. Might take a bit of practice to get that information instantly accessible, but it is there.
>just read and mine vocab and you'll grow accustomed to the kanji without having to do RTK
And you'll learn your kanji inefficiently, with zero logical build-up and radicals being introduced in a completely random order. Also a good chance that you end up endlessly kicking the can down the road as more and more similar looking kanji appear because you never bothered to properly learn any of them. It's also the most natural way to learn, and yet kanji is what people bitch about the most. How come people who do RTK don't bitch about kanji despite having a "stupid" study method?

>> No.21004237

>>21004170
>Maybe doing the 500 most frequent kanji using the lazy kanji method is a good idea
It is, actually. I did like the first 500 without mnemonics but with a keyword on memrise and stopped after that, now I can easily learn a kanji by seeing/learning like two or three words with it. I couldn't imagine going on with keywords, it gets boring after a while.

>> No.21004250

>>21004222
>Might take a bit of practice to get that information instantly accessible
Hence it's not true that if you do RTK you can instantly recognize all kanji?
>And you'll learn your kanji inefficiently
That's OK. If you mine the words you notice a lot you'll be seeing them so much that it'll be a natural SRS. The cool thing about doing things inefficiently is that they're more fun and you're more likely to stick with it.
>Also a good chance that you end up endlessly kicking the can down the road as more and more similar looking kanji appear because you never bothered to properly learn any of them
That's not a problem. It's pretty easy to tell similar kanji apart if you make a mnemonic for them as you come across them.
>How come people who do RTK don't bitch about kanji despite having a "stupid" study method?
RTK makes kanji a lot easier to deal with. It's just not worth the effort.

this is so logical and wise. plus drilling all radical/“primitive” structures. this strategy truly beats all others. through doing this i literally have only encountered around 200~ kanji that are genuinely difficult to decipher from other similar looking ones, and that number is even less when i have context.

making a personalized deck where you show yourself the similar looking kanji you’ve encountered and have to point out which one is which by looking at the radicals or whatever, would take WAY less time than going through all 2000+ needlessly.

even writing can be practiced as a regular part of word reviews if you really want to get good at that. just copy the words you’re reviewing, doing each kanji via their radicals, until you can write those kanji off head. only giving special focus to the ones that are difficult to remember.

And I am going to wake up early in the morning and start my day off right.

also the ajatt shit is just cancerous for someone like him because he thinks he needs to listen and read for hours even when he's continually failed to do it. how about you limit your learning to an hour or two a day. steve only reads for an hour or two and listens while he does chores, and he makes slow but steady progress in languages like arabic. if you can't manage even that, then just give up and do something else. he probably thinks there's something mystical about knowing an asian language. poor guy.

for example 自在 meaning "freely, as you wish" i got the reading right but the meaning wasn't what i wouldve guessed.

The biggest mistake people make is frontloading every single thing into their first year of learning and then abandoning it halfway through because they took on too much and all the extra shit bogs them down so much that they dont even feel theyre making progress.

i finally snapped back to reality and the dictionary and i are friends again now, along with anki. sense of improvement restored, and actual ability to make good guesses is increasing (still less than 10% of all new words i encounter though, which is fine)

as a beginner when i was only reading manga, i’d do the same thing. finish one one or two chapters of a manga then never come back to it, did that for like 10 manga.
after finally finishing my first manga, in a year or so i finished like 20 more volumes of various manga which i’m proud of.
then i upgraded to LNs and started doing the same ‘only partially reading’ thing for a while, BUT i eventually found one i could stick to and as of right now i’m 15 pages away from completely finishing my first light novel!!!

I've been learning japanese intermittently for about 2 years now. And I don't even consider myself at a basic level. Lately I have tried focusing more. I've been reading grammar dictionaries, doing anki and KLC. Talking with Japanese and the like. Hopefully I will be able to maintain my pace.
I am a native Spanish speaker, learned english through immersion.

I'm wondering, I am having french classes at university. Do you think learning 2 languages at the same time is problematic or good? I am more invested in japanese of course.

For instance, I was reading quantum physics books when I was in 5th grade (even did a presentation on string theory), started learning to draw in 8th grade and have reached a fairly satisfactory level by now (but plan to improve that more in the coming years), I've dabbled in music theory a bit, I program (web development, C++, Julia, and various other things), and most recently I've been studying Japanese and stenography. I've been studying for about 6 months, only roughly following the advice Matt gives on his channel. I've made tremendous and very tangible progress, but I've definitely been slacking a fair bit compared to how much work I'm "supposed" to be putting in. I definitely want to fix that soon though, which I guess is part of my motivation for joining this server. Although for me it's definitely more about the journey than the destination. I'd rather take my time and have fun than work myself to death and reach the end faster.
In any case, it's nice to meet you all, and I look forward to future discussions.

Someone who has no sexual experience is going to be emotionally and mentally stunted, but you shouldn't buy someone a diamond anyways because it's a waste of shittons of money and also supports postcolonial corporate control over foreign economies. Really, the ideal way to spend money on a girl is to pamper your 引きこもり妹 with electronics, games, and good food.
