Gaining admittance to the Hakurei Empress' audience chamber proved surprisingly easy. Reimu's vassals were all far afield, and it seemed that none of the Shrine's affairs required urgent attention from her.

I was expecting someone regal and imposing, but she mostly just looked tired. Her clothes still bore the dust from the road, as she had just recently returned from a long campaign against the infidels of Youkai Mountain. The fighting had been inconclusive, as neither side could fully commit its forces: half of Kanako's minions were entrenched on a second front against the Netherworld and Mayohiga, while Reimu's attention had been diverted by a series of border incidents with the Myourenji and House Scarlet that both had the potential to escalate into full-blown conflicts.

Despite her kind words, I could tell she wasn't taking me seriously. I wanted to offer her my sword and my loyalty, but now was not the time. I needed to prove my skills and make a name for myself, so that when I entered Reimu's service I would be granted land and a title. Then I could help her unify Gensokyo and end this period of turmoil.

The duel was fiercer than expected. The fairy fought well, and stubbornly stood her ground even after sustaining what were surely lethal injuries, until she finally collapsed. The victory felt hollow, but I reassured myself that such bloodshed was necessary in order to achieve lasting peace.

It's Touhou: Origins. I'll see if I can figure out some place to upload it later. I'm not sure where to download it from these days, and I've made some modifications/improvements to it anyway. The mod never left an alpha state, and it's a bit of a mess. With my additions, it's still a mess, but a more enjoyable one.

Tons of things that still had default Mount and Blade names were renamed, as were a bunch of things that had largely incomprehensible or obviously incorrect names. A few units were added or rebalanced slightly, mostly to reduce the degree by which the SDM is better than everyone. There were several items in the game that were obviously intended for certain characters/lords that had never actually been given to them, which was rectified. I gave a few more lords custom equipment to make them more interesting, and tried to make fewer of them carbon copies of the default Mount and Blade lords in terms of skills/stats and weaponry. Troop compositions were adjusted a bit so that AI forces make use of some units that were previously ignored for some reason.

That's all I remember offhand. Nothing too huge, I mostly just wanted for things to have comprehensible names rather than "hmx_boli" or whatever.

Oh yeah, I also replaced pretty much all the mercenaries, because they were still the default Warband mercenaries and they looked hilariously out of place with all the touhou characters running around.

I will note that the mod does still have some significant problems. The biggest one is that a few maps/environments are still unfinished: you pretty much have to auto-resolve when assaulting two particular castles because it's impossible for your troops to reach the enemy troops. It's also impossible to complete the Prison Break quest in certain locations. There's also tons of balance issues and a lot of general weirdness, like how you equip a lot of headgear by putting it onto your boot slot.

I do still like it, though, even disregarding the touhou characters. There's something endearing about the gonzo kitchen-sink nature of it all, and a lot of the environments are pretty imaginative. It's hard to find other mods where you can assail a flying castle, battle against nekoromancers while they summon up undead on the battlefield, or fight through a fortified riverbank where underwater kappa barrage your troops with advanced weaponry.

>> No.20704878

I'm in the mood to ramble about something, so I'll give an overview of some things.

General Tips:

-Unlike in vanilla Warband, the patrols sent out by each faction are hostile to everything not belonging to their parent factions. This means that they can and will attack you just for wandering into their territory. Most of them are quite powerful due to their troop numbers/quality and/or some nasty gimmicks, and they will absolutely wipe the floor with a starting character, so watch out for them. On the plus side, destroying them doesn't harm relations with their parent faction, and they can be a good way to get renown and money once you can handle them.

-It's common for patrols and bandits to amass a ton of prisoners, sometimes including high-tier units or even super-units that the player cannot ordinarily recruit. Taking advantage of this should be a high priority later in the game once you have garrisons, especially because you don't want an enemy lord to suddenly gain hundreds of good troops.

-Lords are generally more powerful than in vanilla Warband. This is doubly true of the faction leaders, some of whom are effectively one girl armies. Some of the strongest lords have unique equipment with nasty properties, and you can generally expect to be one-shotted by any successful attack from people like Flandre and Utsuho. If you don't have your forces spread out when facing Remilia, she can and will kill your entire army with Gungnir.

-It's not uncommon to run into enemies with high armor values. Even some bandit troops, while not otherwise threatening, have enough armor that a starting character might have trouble dealing much damage to them (for that matter, don't be surprised if your introduction to the mod is having your face smashed in by a Rumia-clone.) As such, blunt and piercing weapons are very valuable, especially early on when you don't have much power attack/draw/throw. Military Picks and Military Hammers are both very good and affordable weapons.

-There are a lot of really powerful throwing weapons available, enough so that it's entirely viable to specialize in them. I think this is the only mod I've played where they are capable of being something more than a supplement to your primary weapon. Bows, crossbows, and guns are also all very effective, as you can carry a ton of ammo and shields are uncommon.

-Be careful of troop upkeep costs. It's relatively easy to recruit high-level cavalrymen even early in the game, but they will put a serious dent in your finances if you don't know what you're doing.

Each faction has a basic troop line recruited from villages, and an elite troop line recruited from castles. Certain lords, patrols, and locations also employ unique troops that cannot be recruited through ordinary means, and these unique troops tend to be pretty exceptional. Always try to rescue them if you see them being held prisoner by bandits or a faction patrol.

Hakurei Shrine
Mikos are the basic troop line, and they can be upgraded into either archers or melee infantry. The melee infantry forces are all equipped with polearms and throwing weapons. They're fragile, but they perform well in open-field battles, and the highest tier ones often use very good blunt weapons. The archers are arguably the best in the game, at least if you're looking purely at their archery skill: they're fragile and they suck at melee combat, but they will annihilate enemies at range.

The elite troop line consists of very strong and very expensive cavalry. They have two upgrade paths, but they're almost identical. Both of them carry lances, heavy weapons, and throwing weapons.

The Hakurei Shrine is a very large and strong faction. However, they share a border with practically everyone, and they tend to get worn down by constant wars on multiple fronts. Reimu herself is arguably the most dangerous lord in the game: her honor guard is composed of nigh-unstoppable killing machines, she fields a large army, and her personal combat power is very high.

SDM
The SDM has a very diverse basic troop line. Their war-meidos can be upgraded into heavy infantry wielding two-handed weapons, heavy infantry using sword-and-board, crossbowmen, spear-chuckers, or mounted archers. The shields used by SDM troops are absurdly overpowered, so any troops with them are pretty much impervious to ranged weapons. The two heavy infantry options are both pretty devastating, and the spear-chuckers tend to perform really well in sieges. The only real weakness of the SDM troop line is that it can take an awful long time to fully upgrade them.

The SDM's elite troop consists of a fairly standard knight unit.

Remilia and Flandre both field ridiculously strong knight units, and Remilia in particular is arguably the strongest lord in the game in terms of personal combat ability. These super-powered knights are included in one of the SDM's patrol squads, so watch out for that. They will mop the floor with most other elite units, and will inflict heavy casualties even on most late-game armies.

The SDM's territories are very tightly clustered, giving them a huge logistical advantage. They also have a lot of strong lords and very good troops of nearly every type, which pretty easily makes them the strongest faction in the game overall. SDM favoritism bugs me, so I make sure to always smash them.

The Underworld
The Underworld's basic troops are oni. They can be upgraded into heavy infantry, crossbowmen, or cavalry. The heavy infantry are extremely tough, and carry either axes and shields or two-handed weapons that can crush through blocks like tetsubo. Some of them also carry throwing axes, and they have enough skill and power-throw to inflict serious damage with them. They perform extremely well in sieges.

The crossbowmen carry siege crossbows, so they have long range and hit hard, but suffer from a very long reload time. They are also a whole lot tougher in melee than most ranged units, which makes them very hard to deal with when assaulting Underworld castles: when cornered, they will pull out tetsubo and smash your face in with one hit if you aren't careful. The cavalry carry lances and tetsubo.

The Underworld's elite troop line starts off as weak mounted skirmishers, which can then be upgraded into kasha or hell ravens. Kasha are extremely capable mounted skirmishers, which are also skilled and hardy enough to perform well in melee combat. They're incredibly versatile troops that can perform well in nearly any role. Hell ravens are lancers that also carry guns and swords: their guns have a really long reload time, but they will probably kill anything they hit. Typically, the hell ravens will fire off one volley and then charge into melee. Hell ravens usually perform better overall in open-field battles, whereas kasha are better at sieges. Note that it's sometimes worthwhile to have Kasha dismount during a field battle if you just want to station them on top of a hill and use them as archers.

Tsuchigumo can also be recruited from the dark blowhole. These troops have incredibly fast and maneuvarable "mounts," and are equipped with rapid-firing "guns" and tetsubo. They don't have especially high stats considering their cost, but their equipment is extremely good, and they can perform well in multiple roles. Since they can only be recruited from one location, it's hard to get very many of them.

Though otherwise an extremely powerful faction, the Underworld has a serious logistics problem. The real power of the Underworld is way down in the depths, far away from everything. As such, they have trouble gathering their forces to lay siege to their enemies or defending their territories near the surface, and they usually lose a lot of ground to the SDM.

Eientei
Eientei's basic troops are earth rabbits, which can be upgraded into either melee infantry or archers. The melee infantry carry shields, one-handed blunt weapons, and throwing daggers, while the archers have longbows and blunt weapons. None of them are especially powerful, but they're serviceable and practical troops. They're also good at taking prisoners, which is a great way to gain income. Significantly superior numbers of earth rabbit infantry can overwhelm almost anything, since their blunt weapons are good against high-armor targets and will occasionally knock foes down.

The elite troops are lunar rabbits, equipped with muskets. They have extremely long range and high accuracy, and under the right conditions they can devastate foes wielding shorter-ranged weapons like bows. They can also inflict a surprising amount of damage in melee; those bayonettes hurt.

Kaguya inexplicably appears to wield a large aluminum baseball bat in combat., which amuses me every time I see it.

Youkai Mountain
The Youkai Mountain's tengu can be upgraded into melee infantry, archers, gunners, or cavalry. The melee infantry carry a wide variety of possible equipment, but tend to favor polearms and two-handed swords. The archers and gunners are both fairly typical: the archers tend to fare better at short ranges due to their higher rate of fire, while the gunners do better at long range. The cavalry are quite good, because their weapon can be couched like a lance, but it's also a serviceable melee weapon once they get stuck-in.

The Youkai Mountain's elite troops are priestesses, who can be upgraded into melee fighters, archers, or mounted archers. The melee fighters are initially terrible, but once fully upgraded they become very tough melee units that favor two-handed weapons. The archers are basically a slightly weaker version of the Hakurei Shrine's archers. The horse-archers are a bit less skilled than the foot-archers, but they have a horse, so they can run around and be generally obnoxious as horse-archers are wont to be.

Youkai Mountain also has a lot of strong specialty troops that can't be recruited through normal means. If you find them as prisoners, recruiting them can be very worthwhile.

The Netherworld
The spirits of the Netherworld use samurai-ish equipment, and can be upgraded into either melee fighters, archers, or cavalry. Most of them are pretty fragile due to their lack of shields, weak armor, and low ironflesh. The highest-tier melee fighters do have extremely high armor values, though, enough so to make them nigh-invulnerable to a lot of attacks. The AI lords tend to field a ton of the archers, and their high firing speed can make them hard to deal with. The cavalry are pretty standard lancers.

The elite troop line consists of...more ghostly samurai. These can be upgraded into gunners or cavalry. The cavalry are largely identical to the non-elite cavalry, just with much higher stats and a bit better equipment. The gunners have very high stats and are well-armored compared to most of the alternatives, but their guns are somewhat inferior to those used by Eientei's lunar rabbits. They're still possibly the toughest recruitable gunners in the game, though.

The Netherworld's shikigami patrols look weak for an elite faction patrol, but they have a very nasty trick. Troops killed by them are immediately ressurected as Netherworld troops. This means that if an arrow flies over your shoulder and kills someone wielding a two-handed sword right behind you, you have a problem. The kitsune are also amongst the best archers in the game, so it's hard to avoid taking some casualties.

The Netherworld's forces look weak on paper, but in practice they perform farily well. The sturdy elites and rank 5 swordsmen tend to draw a lot of fire away from the more fragile troops, who can then inflict a lot of damage with bows and two-handed swords. Many of the troops also have extremely good helmets even if the rest of their armor is lacking, which seems to make a big difference during siege assaults. The Netherworld's territory is also very defensible, and they have several capable lords. The Nehterworld often ends up quickly carving through Youkai Mountain.

Myouren Temple
Myouren's warrior-monks start off wielding polearms, and can optionally be upgraded into gunners. The gunners can be decent, mostly because it only takes one upgrade for the rookies to become gunners, and they're very cheap troops, so it's an easy way to amass an entire army of musketeers if you're so inclined. The pole-arm wielding warrior-monks are flat-out inferior to the Hakurei Shrine's mikos: they're both less versatile and less powerful, despite wielding a pretty good weapon.

The temple's elite troops consist of...more monks wielding the same polearms. They can be upgraded into cavalrymen, but they're pretty awful either way by elite troop standards. The Hakurei Shrine's mikos outperform them even without being fully upgraded.

So, basically, Myouren Temple sucks. The AI doesn't make very heavy use of their gunners and everything else they have is awful at siege warfare, so it's really easy to eliminate the Myourenji from the game (though Byakuren and Shou are very good at fighting open-field battles.) I've been meaning to make some of their lord's unique specialty troops recruitable through normal means: some of them are powerful and fun to use without being overwhelming.

Senkai
Senkai's daoshi can be upgraded as melee infantry or crossbowmen. The melee infantry are sturdy thanks to their relatively heavy armor and large shields, and their swords will tear through lightly-armored opponents, but they perform poorly against high-armor foes. The crossbowmen are armed with repeating crossbows, which are extremely good weapons, and they're also decent at melee combat.

Senkai's elites are onmyoji. They're a bit fragile for elites, and they can't be upgraded, but they have the equipment and skills to fight well either in melee or at range. Additionally, if you have onmyoji in your army, then they will occasionally supplement your forces with jiangshi (I forget the precise mechanics behind this, but you do need to have room in your army to recruit more troops.) Jiangshi start off weak, but when upgraded they become very durable "cavalry," though their offensive power remains pretty low.

Senkai's lords lack any unique specialty troops, which hurts them quite a bit, and Miko is the weakest of the faction leaders. They still tend to be harder to fight against than Myouren Temple, though, because Senkai's basic troops kick the ever-living shit out of those of Myourenji.

Mercenaries
In general, mercenaries are substantially weaker than similar fully-upgraded faction troops, particularly those of the major factions (Hakurei Shrine, SDM, Underworld, Youkai Mountain, and the Netherworld.) They're also pretty expensive for what they are. However, all of them are a lot stronger and better equipped than new recruits. Even lower-tier mercenaries often have pretty good armor and weapons, so they're very useful when you need troops in a hurry.

There's a lot of equipment that can change your face, and it's possible to make yourself look like any character in the game. Some of it is sold in shops, and some can be randomly obtained when defeating that character (or troops that look like that character.) If you join a faction, you can also ask allied lords to give you copies of their equipment if they like you enough (I forget the exact relation requirement.) I seem to recall it being possible to get copies of your companions' equipment as well, but I'm having trouble remembering how to do that at the moment. You might have to make them lords or something.

Equipment you get from friendly lords can be accessed through the camp menu (take an action->check your cosplay.) There are also a few pieces of equipment in there that can sometimes help with clipping issues.

Speaking of clipping issues, a lot of headgear doesn't work well with hair, so I usually start bald despite how weird that looks until you get a "helmet."

Companions currently lack custom dialogue, though, so currently Cirno will talk about how she needs to redeem herself after having killed her brother rather than anything appropriate. I've considered editing the companion dialogue files a few times, but it would be a bit of work, and I have no idea what to do with some of them. I should also alter the cost of hiring companions at some point. Some of them are fine, but a monster like Tenshi probably shouldn't join for just 300 denars.

I already replaced one of the generic mercs with fairies. Adding a new faction is a bit overly ambitious of a project, though, at least for me. I could probably create a new troop tree using Morgh's and some texture editing, but ceating new territories and castle/town scenes is another issue entirely, as is actually coding much of anything. I would rather try to fix some of the broken things in the game first, regardless.

I actually wasn't aware that decompiler existed. That would open up a lot of possibilities if I was more comfortable with the module system.

They're mounts with incredible acceleration, max speed, and maneuverability. They're mostly used by Myouren Temple's super-units.

The mod has a number of unorthodox mounts. Mimi-chan very occasionally appears in shops, and is fast enough to allow you to cross the entire battlefield in seconds (though I think it also requires max or near-max ride skill.) Marisa has her broom, kasha have carts, and Suika inexplicably rides her sake gourd into battle.

I might try to overhaul the banner textures next. The current ones are a mess: a lot of them are misaligned, there's no logic behind which lords receive which banners, there's a ton of duplicates, a bunch of custom banners are in a file the game doesn't actually use, etc. I also just don't think many of them look very good.

It might not be a huge issue, but it should be one I have the skillset to address, at least.

Given that Remilia's gungnir attack does very much resemble an artillery strike or mortar bombardment, I strongly suspect that it was stolen from a mod that has such things. I haven't toyed around with many mods that have a more modern setting than the default one, though, so it isn't something I've personally encountered.

I see now why the banner textures were so awful. This mod was made back before a patch improved how the game handles banners, which means that the banners in the texture file are all slightly different sizes, and it's hard to predict whether they'll be displayed horizontal, vertical, v-cut, square, or whatever in-game. I should still be able to fix everything, though, and I've made 40 or so new banners already.

>>20745274
The Lunar Rabbits have Napoleonic War-era muskets, which are superior to the Sengoku-era Japanese muskets that most other gunners wield. This includes carbines that can be used while mounted.

However, the best firearm in the game is actually a kappa laser-gun. While not otherwise especially remarkable, it's a semi-automatic weapon in a world of single-shot muskets, so it's incredibly effective so long as you have high enough skill to offset the gun's mediocre accuracy. Amusingly, the ammo for the weapon is freely available and interchangeable with other firearms, so you can shoot lasers out of a musket if so desired. The gun itself is very difficult to acquire, though.

There are also several weapons that function as firearms despite not really being guns, like mini-hakkero and Utsuho's control rod.

At a glance, it looks like all banners now display properly, and all vassal lords now receive banners that are in some way appropriate to them rather than random ones. The faction leader/kingdom banners are still a little screwed up, as no fewer than 3 leaders insist on using Byakuren's banner. This is probably due to a coding issue so simple that even I can fix it.

I'm still feeling motivated, so next I'll probably go back to revising the stats and equipment of some of the lords who are still stuck with generic stuff, and maybe look into writing up some short companion dialogue that actually makes sense. I've had enough of Akyuu telling me about the "house of Rolf." I might also try to continue the silly story I opened this thread with.

I'm in the same boat. The mod has all sorts of obvious flaws, but I always find myself enjoying it anyway. Sometimes I'm even enjoying it because of the flaws, not in spite of them.

As an example, one Netherworld castle in particular is pretty poorly set up. The AI pathing can't figure out how to assault it, so during an attack your army is likely to try ascending a mountain at a speed of roughly one millimeter per minute. Even if you have them follow you, your troops will inevitably get stuck on objects somewhere, thus making your forces mostly worthless. However, the defending troops are also really poorly arranged. If you're good enough, you can travel all around the map to the back door, infiltrate the castle while shooting a handful of archers, and then slaughter the entire garrison single-handedly. Because of the way the map is set up, the archers' line of sight is mostly blocked by terrain and the mob of melee defenders, so it's easy to bait a few samurai away at a time for an "honorable duel." It's a silly situation brought about by poor design, but going on a solo mission and hacking through ~150 undead samurai was also a lot of fun.

I also never fail to be amused when watching a squad of lancers crash into a horde of giant catfish, or when some angry fairies tell me they're going to drink from my skull.

Alright, here's a new version with new banners, revised NPC lords, renamed items, and some other stuff. It won't break existing save games, but some changes may require a new game in order to take effect. At minimum, I know the faction leader banners will continue to be screwed up in an old savegame, and your own banner will probably be altered if you have one.

https://mega.nz/#!vDRQkYaQ!aRjuZ1gA-q1-X6Xh8-n220ltNjaLb7cbF6zAS9gN7oE

I haven't had time to do much playtesting, so let me know if I somehow broke anything.

Next, I'll probably focus on companion dialogue and the intro dialogue. I also have some interest in revamping the pretenders, since I find supporting them entertaining in Native and some other mods, but I'm not sure what to do with most of them. The Hakurei pretender already looks ilke Seija, which I could work with, and I have an idea for what I could do with the SDM one, but that still leaves the Netherworld, Myouren Temple, Youkai Mountain, and the Underworld (the other factions don't have a pretender.) The others being OC's would be kind of lame, but creating assets for touhou characters who aren't already in the game would be more work than I want to put into that aspect of the mod (and even then I'm not sure which ones would make any sense.) That doesn't leave many options.

Regardless, it'll probably be a bit before I make much more meaningful progress.

Bear in mind that I'm very new at this.
There's a lot I don't know, and anything more complex than replacing existing dialogue strings will take me some effort. With that said: adding/revising dialogue for specific groups encountered on the map is relatively simple. So, you could have different dialogue for each specific type of faction patrol, each type of bandit group, etc. You can even give them voice acting or sound effects if you're so inclined.

I'm less sure about how to go about, say, giving different dialogue to generic villagers from different factions. I know it's doable, but I'm not sure if there's a way to achieve it that wouldn't be a lot of work. Trying to do anything based specifically on race would probably be foolhardy, as the mod does not use the gender/race slots in a consistent fashion.

>>20792634
I don't recall it being much different in that regard from other mods (though it has been a while since I played anything else other than Gekokujo); money tends to be pretty tight early on. It is relatively easy to get a bunch of soldiers who are much higher level than anything in Native, though, and upkeep costs are based primarily on level. It is definitely something you need to pay some attention to. Recruiting some elites and then taking a leisurely two-week long trip to the bottom of the Underworld will put a dent in your finances.

However, the abundance of high-level troops also means that you can make a ton of money by selling prisoners, which is where I usually get most of my income in the early and mid-game. If you employ primarily troops that favor blunt weapons, like oni or earth rabbits, then it's not hard to take a full stack of prisoners in a battle, which you can then sell for a bunch of denars. Even bandits can give a decent amount of money, so long as they aren't just looters, whereas high-tier faction troops might sell for 500+ denars each. So long as the ransom brokers don't prove hard to find, this can add up real quick.

Selling all the loot you get in battle helps a bit too, especially if you have a companion with some points in Trade, and a mercenary contract can provide at least some stable income. Later on, fiefs and businesses can take care of your upkeep costs, allowing you to slowly amass a fortune.

You might also just not try to maintain a full-sized warband right from the get-go, and/or dismiss some troops if you aren't going to be fighting for a while for some reason. Smaller parties are cheaper to maintain and they move faster on the world map, allowing you to get more done before your next weekly upkeep payment. They're also better at avoiding those nasty faction patrols.

>>20793453
For the most part, appearance and thus "race" are determined solely by equipment in this mod. Pretty much everything uses either the default female race/gender slot, or a third race slot that is shared by all sorts of things.

Also, once you do reach the point where you can start investing in businesses and such, it's worth noting that the Netherworld is a good place to set up shop so long as you aren't hostile to them. There's always going to be some weirdness there due to both the way the skins are designed and the kitchen-sink nature of all the items in the mod, but troops having the wrong skins assigned does make things worse.

The water definitely should not look like cows, and it does not look like cows on my end, either in the world map or in scenes. A quick google search suggests that it's actually a problem with Warband itself, and not specific to this mod. The most commonly recommended fix appears to be pasting the TexturesHD folder into the Texture folder, and then deleting TexturesHD. I would advise making backups before attempting this, just in case.

There's not really a simple solution to the SDM problem; I consider them to be the strongest faction in the game. Their forces don't have any severe deficiency that you can exploit with a specialized army, and Remi and Flan are amongst the strongest lords.

I generally don't consider it worthwhile to engage Remi or Flan in open-field battles unless they've already been significantly weakened. They can both field an unholy number of those obnoxious super-powered knights, and they have a lot of strong heavy infantry to back them up with. It's much better to crush them during castle assaults. The knights are far less threatening on foot, and the SDM's archers are nothing special. You'll still need a really strong force of heavy infantry, though. Fielding archers against the SDM is generally a poor idea: anything less absurd than a mass of mecha will be unable to deal much damage before the SDM's well-shielded heavy infantry reach the front. A whole bunch of fully-upgraded oni infantry in a castle will give the SDM a bad time, because oni infantry do not give a shit about shields. You do still need to be careful of Remi, though, since she's basically armed with a rocket launcher.

While Remi and Flan are recovering or imprisoned, it's much easier to launch an offensive against the SDM. Some of their other lords are still tough, but they don't field anyhing on par with Scarlet Knights or Chaos Knights.

>> No.20812817

>>20812780
If you've gained control of your own kingdom, it's also worthwhile to try getting Flan to switch sides. I forget exactly which, but has one of the negative lord personality types, and as the game drags on it becomes increasingly likely that she'll get pissed off at Remilia and the other SDM lords. If she builds up enough of a negative relation score and gets involved in enough feuds, it might not take much convincing to get her to join you.

This was an extremely silly battle. The village being raided was really small, and Tenshi basically split the map in two with the Sword of Hisou's stupid earthquake power. The farmers were all trapped on Flan's side, and got slaughtered. The handful of archers present on each side then had a great time shooting all the melee fighters who couldn't figure out how to circumvent the giant pile of rubble. I eventually won, but with heavy casualties.

I typically confiscate the Sword of Hisou prior to castle assaults, because Tenshi csn't be trusted not to clog the siege ramps/ladders with boulders.

Tournaments vary an awful lot in this mod depending on the location. Some are pretty standard slugfests, others are long arenas dominated by lancers, and some are...unique. There's one where the primary challenge is avoiding falling to your death, a battle between lancers inside a giant hotspring where no one can build up speed, and a battle inside a confusing giant cavern where many of the contestants inevitably get lost somewhere, among others.

If you're having trouble due to bizarre tournament environments, I think I recall Myouren Temple and Youkai Mountain having comparatively straightforward and sensible ones.

Yes, that should be within my capabilities, though it's probably not something I'll get around to examining especially soon. Listing any specific problems you've encountered on that front would be helpful, as I may not necessarily feel like analyzing every single scene in the mod for those sorts of flaws.

It is pretty obnoxious how some fights in villages start off with both forces practically stacked on top of each other in tight little blobs, or how troops occasionally spawn in impossible-to-reach locations in a few castles scenes.

>> No.20825950

>>20825720
It's a bit simplistic, but I actually kind of like that scene (which is good, because it's used for more than one location.) Marching through the giant corridor of death while getting shot from every imaginable angle is pretty brutal, but it's made up for by how poor the setup is for the defenders once you do reach the front. There's no ladders or anything; you can march a whole mob of troops right up that wide staircase.

And yeah, the daoist forces can be pretty effective. It's easy to mount an extended campaign and garrison all your holdings when every battle gives you free troops. Jiangshi upgrade awfully quickly too, and are relatively tough once upgraded.

I'd completely forgotten about the Moriya Shrine arena one, since I don't go to arenas very often. That is pretty amusing.

The SDM taverns are a frequent irritation to me as well, so I'll add them to the list I'm putting together.

I seem to recall the Great Mausoleum castle exterior being alright, though it has been a while since I fought a battle there. While I understand your reaction to the interior, I'm a bit hesitant to do anything to it. It's a unique environment, and it is actually possible to reach most if not all locations of importance with some careful platforming. I kind of like the idea that the hermits' secret dojo/hideout isn't a place that ordinary people can just stroll into. Plus, it's not really a location you should need to visit very often; castle interiors don't provide many functions.

>>20827255

So far as I can tell, the companion morality types and their effects are not well documented anywhere, so I'll probably leave those alone and try to work with what's in place. I've written up dialogue for a few companions now, and I have ideas for what to do with all the others aside from Shinki and Sariel. I know that this mod features a Gensokyo where the Prismriver sisters are vassal lords of Komeiji Satori, who is herself a mighty queen aiming to unify the land under her banner, and as such I probably should not be too concerned about canon. It's still a bit hard to come up with reasons for gods and archangels to join some random mercenary company, though.

>>20831345
I occasionally get crashes when I quickly switch from one scene to another (for example, if I go to the tavern, see that a ransom broker isn't there, and then immediately go to the castle instead.)

I imagine that the map structure, with all its clustered territories and chokepoints, leads to lords getting into more fights and getting defeated more often than in most mods, especially since all those faction patrols like to dogpile into battles against weakened lords. Losing battles is the primary way vassals lose relation, so its not surprising that the faction leaders struggle to maintain cohesion. It's like how King Harlaus in native is known for holding constant feasts, because Swadia almost always gets invaded by two or three other factions right off the bat.

I've decided against trying to overhaul that sort of thing for the moment, though. The basic premise of the mod is silly enough that it's hard to say that changing up the affiliations would really cause it to make much more sense. There's a lot of room to work with, and it's not a particularly remote location.

There's also tons of space all along the outskirts of the map, especially near Eientei and the Netherworld. If a theoretical fairy faction was both extremely tiny and wanted to duke it out with the SDM to liberate Cirno's homeland, there is at least a small sliver near the lake that isn't occupied. That location looks like a death sentence for a tiny faction, though.

It really depends on what exactly you're struggling with, though I guess I can attempt to give some general tips.

Ideally, you should focus on personal skills and leader skills with your character. You can hire companions to cover party skills you need. It may not sound like a significant bonus, but path-finding in particular is really handy.

In the very early game, you'll probably want to spend a bit of time crushing bandits. You should be able to handle them even with a small band of fresh recruits. This will get you renown, money (from selling loot and prisoners) and quite possibly some better equipment. Watch out for faction patrols, as they will completely steamroll a band of rank 1 troops.

Early on, you should probably avoid spending your money on anything but the necessities: food, and paying/upgrading your troops. Maybe buy a cheap shield if you need one, or hire a useful companion.

Once you're a bit stronger and have a better handle on things, becoming a mercenary for one of the factions isn't a bad idea. The income isn't great, but it does still help offset your rising upkeep costs, and it gives you good opportunities to gain more renown, get better equipment by defeating enemy lords, and to build relation with the lords of a faction.

In combat, make sure to actually give orders to your units. Having an army of archers charge directly into the enemy tends to be sub-optimal, as does having your cavalry hit the enemy line two minutes before the rest of your forces arrive. Making good use of the terrain can have a huge impact on a battle.

I appreciate the offer, but I'm just about finished with this. All I have left is a smattering of lines based on who each character likes/dislikes, and everything related to Sariel. I'm largely limiting myself to replacing existing dialogue strings for the moment, because that takes a lot less effort.

That said, in case you feel like expanding on things or replacing some of my weaker writing attempts at some point: it's possible to add new conversation topics to each companion that can be selected when talking to them, and those can lead to branching conversations and/or be based on conditionals. This isn't something I've toyed around with much yet, so I don't have the clearest picture of what all conditionals are possible or how much work that sort of thing would be to add in general. I'm kind of learning how all this works as I go along. There are quite a few things that I can at least make a good guess at how to execute based on the list of operations, but having the appearance of a coversation topic be based on map proximity to something is not one of them.

I wouldn't say there is a definitive "best" from amongst those units. It depends on what you're going up against, what other troops you're using, how high of an upkeep cost you're willing to put up with, and how long of a training/upgrade time is acceptable. I'll note that the Rampaging Youkai bands are made up exclusively of level 45 troops, so taking casualties against them shouldn't be too surprising. They have high stats and can hit very hard.

Your best easily-acquired cavalry choice against those enemies in particular is likely to be kasha. Nothing in the Rampaging Youkai bands carries a shield, and kasha are very good archers. If you really want something you can have charge into the enemy instead, then youkai hunters are probably your best bet. Youkai hunters have really high stats all-around, and usually carry a good variety of weapons.

If you need something cheaper, tengu cavalry and tsuchigumo are both very effective despite not being as high level.

If you're looking for multi-role cavalry, kasha are pretty hard to beat. They're primarily archers, but they also carry swords and are highly proficient with them. They do really well both in field battles and sieges, though they'll be a bit outclassed by more specialized units.
Plus, if the core of your army is archers/gunners, you probably don't want a small melee-focused cavalry squad to charge into the enemy alone, get bogged down, and die.

I'm not sure exactly what info you're looking for regarding becoming a mercenary/vassal, so I'll just give a basic overview. If a faction is at war, sometimes their lords will offer to hire you on as a mercenary when you ask if you can help them out. For the duration of the mercenary contract, you are mostly treated as a member of that faction, save that you won't be awarded fiefs. You also receive a bit of money each payment period.

Once your renown is high enough, faction leaders may occasionally offer to make you one of their vassals, or you can just approach them and ask to swear fealty to them. Fiefs tend to provide pretty good income.

And, of course, you can just overrun some random castle while independent and start your own kingdom. Doing this with low Right to Rule and/or few friends will lead to an exciting game.

>some enemy skins make their hitboxes ambiguous, minor annoyance, but still one nonetheless

The broken siege maps at least I intend to address eventually, though that's likely to be a time-consuming project.

The issue you're having with jiangshi most likely isn't their hitbox, but that they carry invisible shields. I believe it was meant to represent an ability to block attacks while unarmed, but it is a little awkward to deal with. It is at least a pretty weak shield, so a few attacks from about any weapon are likely to break it.

>Seems like a hefty undertaking, but that's considering I've never dealt with AI.

I wish the AI was the only issue. There are two castles that consist of random bits of scenery floating in the sky that can't be reached by any means during sieges, several with long sets of stairs that are too tall for anyone to actually climb, one that is nothing but a 500 foot long ladder ascending a shaft that ends in a platform containing all the defenders, and so on. The castle scenes are simultaneously the best and worst thing about the mod: the good ones are extremely imaginative and fun, whereas the bad ones are broken incomplete messes.

Thankfully, the scene-editing tools actually look pretty accessible. I won't know for sure until I plunge into it, but even building castles from scratch might not be all that bad.

Fought in a few more sieges. Myouren Cemetery is oddly enough a Native wooden castle scene. Palanquin Ship looks like a Gekokujo import, but requires the attackers to walk for like 5 minutes before even coming in contact with the enemy.

>>20870556

Sky Docks? It also has a bug where troops get stuck on the side of that platform. Many defenders easily fall into the abyss, and if they're alive by then, attacking forces will keep shooting at them.

>>20873168

Change race is broken because races were never properly implemented before the project quit out. This is true, but even at very high levels caravans only start with 40-60 troops or so. The multiplier to max troops sizes isn't that enormous.

>Does anyone know what the "change race" option does?
It lets you change your skin, which in turn alters your body proportions somewhat. Depending on what you have equipped, this may either do nothing, or make certain items fit better or worse. As an example, using the "female" choice will make gloves/gauntlets actually fit properly, but will make most of the mod-exclusive equipment have clipping issues...at least when the race selector actually works. It seems to stop functioning occasionally for some reason.

>Sky Docks?
I'm actually thinking of one of the Youkai Mountain castles, though I forget exactly which one it is. I'm fine with the defenders having a significant advantage during sieges, but that place is completely unassailable. Sky Docks has a similar set up, but is far less difficult to assault barring defenders spawning in inaccessible locations.

That sounds like a cool feature, but there is one potential complication depending on how you were thinking of implementing it. Currently, the mod makes use of three new skin/race slots, which are used to have troops of different sizes. Skin 3 is basically the default, and used for all sorts of humans and youkai. Skin 4 is used for larger characters, like oni, whereas smaller characters like Cirno and the Scarlets use Skin 5. Fairies of different types inexplicably use all three of these, and a handful of units use the two default slots.

So, if you were thinking of basing it on those slots, they're already in use and do not indicate the unit's actual race.

Yeah, codifying race is going to have to account for the skin system, so there's probably going to be duplicates of models to represent same body styles of different races, but it shouldn't be that much of a headache, beyond the inherent pains in modifying all the units on the roster typically is.

I would be willing to handle the process of going through the troops list and assigning new race/skin slots where needed, if/when you feel like attempting this. I know that's not a whole lot of help, but it's something.

I'm paying like 4000 wages for my party and my garrison now. I probably should have less calvary but they are so useful.
Also how do I make a town I own less poor

>> No.20874931

There's no especially fast or reliable way of increasing a town's prosperity, so far as I'm aware. Certain quests from that town will increase it, and it tends to increase over time so long as nothing is disrupting the economy. Caravans failing to reach their destinations, the town being besieged, and nearby farmers getting massacred are all harmful to prosperity. Caravans in this mod have a very hard time reaching their destinations in this mod thanks to the genocidal faction patrols, which hurts all the towns a bit.

Underworld and Scarlet devil have too similar colours. It's hard to tell at a glance who is who.
For that matter it's almost impossible to tell what is a city or a castle without actually going there.

I took a brief break from dialogue writing to learn more about how the module system code works and to play around with scene editing, which is why progress has been slow. Replacing all the companion dialogue was a larger project than I anticipated, and after writing ~20000 words of it I'm a bit burnt out on that. I'll still finish it before long, though, as there isn't much left to do.

That's cool, pace yourself. If you burn out too hard you'll drop the project. It's always really hard to go back to something you haven't touched for a while, especially if there's a community (however small) with expectations built around it.
If you need a hand with menial things, there seems to be a few of us willing to help.

I had always assumed that this was completely unimplemented, as I could never figure it out either, but I decided to check the code and figured out how to get it working. I'm still not sure what the upgrade actually does, though. My items gained a couple "upgrade" properties when I tested it, but it's not clear what those actually do. I'll have to imvestigate that more later.

Anyway, here is how it actually works: you need to have the two items you want upgraded in the first and second slots of your "cosplay" storage, the inventory you bring up when you select "check cosplay." You also need to have at least one R18 book on hand, because the traveller apparently only accepts payment in the former of lewd Reimu pictures. If you satisfy those requirements, your gear should gain a "cosplay upgrade" quality, which may or may not actually do something.

It's fairly unique, sort of a blend of a strategy game and an action-RPG. In combat, you can give orders to your troops, but you only directly control your own character. So, you engage in large medieval battles from the perspective of a single soldier. The combat mechanics are quite good, and I'm surprised other developers haven't been imitating them.

Outside of combat, you can recruit troops/allies, acquire supplies, take on quests, join factions, make friends, start up business enterprises, etc. It's the sort of game where you largely define your own goals, but in general you start with almost nothing and work your way up to becoming one of the most powerful lords in the land. Conquering all territories, either in the name of your king or your own, is typically the assumed end-goal.
