https://mangadex.org/chapter/541548/1
Summary: Tenshi, Komachi, Sanae, and Marisa do their own shit looking for Reimu in the background. Meanwhile, Reimu is stuck in Hell with Kasen's arm. The figure you see isn't actually the arm with a body, it's just the arm floating. Reimu can just somehow perceive Kasen's past look. It implies that Kasen shoved all her oni essence into one arm and cut it off (or someone else cut it off for her). Long story short, Reimu is being beaten by a floating oni arm. The question is, where is the real Kasen? To be continued next chapter, in April.

Because Reimu was the one who bypassed it.

Basically, Reimu's mind/soul was stuck in Hell, and she slipped through reality unconsciously so that her body would also be in Hell. This is why a mind-based prison, Avici, doesn't have a proper effect on her. The barrier, too, would definitely not stop her. Her natural talents are "breaking any seal easily" and "floating" (which extends to floating outside of reality). Nobody could've stopped her, basically, and she wasn't even trying.

That said I'm all aggravated because this chapter confuses things. It seems like Kasen -arm and Kasen arm-only are BOTH in Hell, but the Kasen we know isn't acting. I can't tell what the fuck is going on, really. Like what the intentions here are. I can speculate, but that's it

Similarly in true spell card duels, it isn't like one person fighting against several cards, it's trading spell card attacks. That said Suika has cards that are just "I throw you". Yuugi's knockout in 3 steps is pure danmaku also. She doesn't actually hit you with a punch.

Both of those points are doubted by the very same source material you got this from. The only reason youkai follow spellcard duels against Reimu is because they are all conscious of the fact that not following them (and possibly killing Reimu) would be detrimental to their existence. See PMiSS for more.

Why youkai follow these rules with each other or with the other humans is unclear. See >>20829564 's point #1 for a possible explanation.

I still think ZUN's explanation and justification of this concept is just bad worldbuilding, with no regards to individual agency and a pretty shoddy explanation that falls apart every time it's scrutinized in /jp/ or elsewhere. Spellcard rules are only a minor point of this thread anyway.

She's a walking nuke that is forcing them to play nice because if they don't she can crush them with less effort that it takes her to pour a cup of tea.

Though I'm not sure how it applies to youkai, Touhou Sangetsusei indirectly explains that fairies have upheld the spellcard system on their end because they don't actually like dying any more than humans do, and find the type of competition danmaku brings to be preferable to fighting with their meager powers set to hurt mode.

Magically oni like Suika and Yuugi pretty much match the most absurd powers in Touhou. Suika can gather and disperse/control destiny, which translates to "can do anything" because she can gather people, concepts, and physical things, can make black holes, rearrange, etc. And Yuugi? She wields unexplainable phenomena, which really just means, again, "can do anything"

Now whether all oni have absurd powers is another matter, but Ibaraki was a legendary and important oni in the legends, so it'd make sense that she'd be more than just strong too.

And again being a sage doesn't indicate anything, it's just a position.

I'm seeing something here.

Ibaraki Douji's arm was the only thing in that Avici at the start.
A trap at the beginning of the earlier chapters transports Reimu's soul to Avici.
Why didn't the arm attack earlier?
Simple. She wasn't waiting for Reimu's soul.

She was waiting for Reimu's body.

As soon as she noticed that Reimu's worldly characteristics appeared (getting hungry), the arm revealed herself and attacked Reimu.
>bringing your body here has only made your suffering worse!
>I should devour you, flesh and all!

If Reimu loses here, her body is coming back to Gensokyo. But this time, the soul inside is...!

Brain damage. The sages created Gensokyo, they're the top dogs of the land. Both Yukari and Okina are powerful beyond imagination. And with this chapter we only see a fraction of Kasen's power (from just her arm). Being a sage already automatically means you're crazy powerful. We haven't even been introduced to a fully reformed Kasen so we don't know what special ability she has yet. Fuck off, moron.

That still makes no indication of power. You have Yukari who made a barrier (which doesn't have anything to do with strength, though she is strong), Okina who maintains Gensokyo secretly, and Kasen who was never given any indication of what she even DID. You can GUESS that she spoke to the Dragon God to make him seal the deal, but there's nothing that says so.

Further they didn't create Gensokyo you idiot, they created the barrier. Gensokyo has been around for ages, and was only sealed off later by the sages. Being a sage means you had something to do with that barrier's creation (and indeed, we've seen Kasen open the barrier on her own), but it doesn't mean you're powerful. You say that but you have no indication of magical strength beyond what we've seen. And, from what we've seen, both Yuugi and Suika are very powerful magically. And no this isn't simply self-declared, it's visible. We've seen Suika tear space itself apart, we've seen Yuugi's absurd extend of magical power. And that's fine, there are several characters that are very powerful. It doesn't even matter who's strongest. The point is that many are powerful. That's one reason for the spellcard rules.

Also don't mention Lunarians, them beating anyone isn't indicative of anything. They aren't on remotely the same level, so saying they beat Yukari is meaningless. Of course they did. Basically, this is like saying Sun Wukong wasn't strong because he couldn't escape the Buddha's palm. No, he's powerful, he's just not going to beat the rules themselves.

>>20829737
>and conflating that their wordplay is the reflection of a character's actual self-declared abilities
>>Suika can gather and disperse/control destiny, which translates to "can do anything" because she can gather people, concepts, and physical things, can make black holes, rearrange, etc. And Yuugi? She wields unexplainable phenomena, which really just means, again, "can do anything"
Again that isn't speculation. Suika CAN do those things. Yuugi CAN do those things. We've seen them do things, and have had others witness their abilities. It's also important to note that they're oni, and while Suika does lie a bit, Yuugi (as far as we know) doesn't, and generally Suika doesn't either.

Honestly, I am of the mind that none of this matters, I'm just saying what we know. There are many powerful characters, but I won't assume any strength. What I've said about the oni are things we know through observation, true statements, and through narration (for instance, IaMP's Yukari ending explains in narration that Suika as well as the rest of the oni are so powerful that their being reintroduced to Gensokyo ALONE would break its reality, and that Suika herself is not as strong as she should be because Gensokyo can't handle it (or her gourd, which is ordinarily truly infinite, but is given a limit in Gensokyo)) All truth, not self-declared even. No, he's not right. Yes, Okina can remake Gensokyo from scratch, that doesn't mean she MADE Gensokyo. Yukari can destroy Gensokyo, that doesn't mean she MADE it. She and Okina were part of the sages who made the barrier, that's all we know, and anything other than that is headcanon.

She can generate heat from basically nothing. A lot of her feats are based on strength, yes, but she also has a lot of strange magical power.

And again, I don't think this *matters*. A lot of people get weirdly defensive about powerlevels. I honestly just want to shut them up with what facts we've been given. I don't speculate. We were told Eiki was the most powerful in Gensokyo? Fine, I don't question it. We were told Hecatia is the strongest on Earth? Find, I don't care.

I basically only join these "discussions" to point out that we have answers, and we don't have any need to assume.

>the Dragon God made Gensokyo
Now that is a real headcanon. No where does it ever say that the Dragon God made Gensokyo, just that he was present when it was created. And here is an excerpt from Okina's profile

However, the dragon god is also Gensokyo's god of creation.
It is thanks to the dragon that the rain falls, the rivers flow and that Gensokyo is enveloped in a verdant green.

>She is also one of the sages who created the Gensokyo of today
Which means she's responsible for creating the new rules and direction of Gensokyo. That says literally nothing about power, not that I'm saying she isn't powerful, just that her TITLE of being a sage says NOTHING about strength.

You'd think you'd have understood that. That's why it says "of today", because Gensokyo has changed as a society quite a lot over time.

By the way to expand on this, in case you forgot Kasen literally has no fucking idea how the barrier works despite being involved in its creation, meaning that whatever she did to make it possible was not really "making the barrier". That makes sense, unlike Okina and Yukari, as far as we know she has no abilities relating to gaps or barriers beyond hermit seals she's used recently.

The popular theory is that she spoke with the Dragon God to make the barrier truly possible, but this is entirely speculation and hasn't even been hinted at. Okina and Yukari are canonically powerful. That's two sages right there. So the phrase "The Sages are Powerful" isn't wrong at all. Being this autistic about Kasen's potential power is unnecessary. According to your autism that's also an assumption because we haven't seen anything real from her yet.

No, that's not how it works. "Sage" is a title. How many times do I have to say this?

You can say that Kasen is powerful because she's an oni, because we know that being an oni means you are powerful.
However being a sage doesn't mean you're powerful just because two sages ARE powerful.
This is why I said "correlation does not equal causation".

This is especially important because of what I've said here >>20829800
Unlike Okina and Yukari, whose responsibilities as sages relied on their innate abilities, Kasen had no involvement with the barrier itself, which explains her complete lack of understanding of it. She's not even one of the sages responsible for Gensokyo's direction as a society, as she has directly said she doesn't like Yukari's brand of doing things.

In the end, we don't know what she was responsible for, but it couldn't have been for the thing where "power" and "ability" mattered, as she has no skill with barriers. We know she's strong because she's an oni, we don't know how strong she is otherwise. You can't assume a sage means power. Sage is a title for wisdom. They are leaders, but that doesn't mean they MUST be powerful. That's what I'm saying. Get it.

Ibaraki Kasen is powerful because she is not only an oni, but one of the oni directly partnered with Ibuki Suika, who was powerful and had HER position BECAUSE she was powerful. Sage has nothing to do with it.

First I'm annoyed because it's stupid. I don't like stupid shit.
Second how the actual fuck is that supposed to support his argument? "They made Gensokyo's current political climate"

Okay? That has nothing to do with power. Reimu was the one who enforced the MOST current Gensokyo by settling the powers of youkai and gods to something reasonable. Yukari may have been responsible, but that's only a theory and even if it's true the enforcer of the rules is Reimu, who does indeed enforce them by strength. However, the order the Sages established ALSO had nothing to do with strength. Their intention was to create a world that could survive the in the evolving modern earth, and that was it. To that end, they separated the land, and regulated it no more than that. The only regulation SPECULATED to have happened in regards to power was Yukari's lunar war, in which far greater powers scared youkai into not wanting to expand further. Yukari herself did not threaten them with her strength to not get uppity. She is a powerful being, but her being a sage is not relevant to her power.

Other things that stood out in this chapter:
- the body only ever used one arm at a time
- the body didn't move an inch during Reimu's ofuda barrage, as if making no effort to dodge it
- Reimu keeps her stick thingy in her sleeves... near her arm pits...
- It's awfully vague as to whether or not the Kasen at page 5 is in hell or simply viewing Reimu from afar.
- what's inside the box Reimu was carrying? Considering that, there are probably two oni arms in Avici right now.
- if Reimu got hungry all of a sudden, enough to have to lie down, then the people in the outside world weren't feeding her so well

Connecting chapter 48 and 49:
- The marks left in the main shrine looks awfully similar to what a battle between Ibaraki Douji's Arm and Reimu would be like. Scratched surfaces, ofuda stuck to the walls. But this was before Reimu and her body was attacked in hell. What's going on here?
- we still don't know what Kasen was keeping in her house, but an earlier chapter where Marisa tried to break in has shown that Kasen is mindful about her house's security all the time.

Weird mentions from chapter 48:
- Tenshi remarks that the only gate left open in the compass they found in Kasen's house only had the northeast gate open (this is the oni's gate). In PCB Phantasm Reimu route, Yukari says that she lives on the northeast part of gensokyo, using the same terms as the one used in the compass. Whether this was just a joke or is actually significant, who knows.

Yes, Kasen must have something, but according the the abilities we know her to have, her most likely relevant ability is "can talk with animals". Again, nothing about power. I cannot believe what unbridled autism I am witnessing with my own two eyes. You have to be autistic to write something like this. Yukari and Okina are among the most powerful in Gensokyo regardless of their title. All I ever said was that Kasen is likely to be as strong as them, which isn't a stretch by any sense of the imagination. Saying the sages "made" Gensokyo isn't wrong either, which is also what I was arguing. My argument wasn't that making Gensokyo made them strong, that was the other guys thing. My argument is that the statement isn't wrong. The sages did indeed make Gensokyo's society. The only thing I claimed was that Kasen MAY be as strong as Yukari and Okina. Anon, that isn't saying "may", so you'll have to forgive me for reading what you said exactly as you said it. However, to think that "Kasen should be powerful because these two are powerful" is not valid. I said it, look it up, "correlation does not equal causation". For all we know there are like 6 unknown sages who were just there to discuss and decide things, and had no power themselves. Indication shows Kasen may have been more like that as her powers as an oni don't seem to have had any hand in the barrier's creation, a feat of magical strength.

If you just think "but, the other sages are powerful so she HAS to be", or even "so she MAY" be, I won't flip out about THAT, but I will tell you that it isn't really valid for the reasons listed above. She has no real reason to be powerful because she's a sage. It's irrelevant which was my original point.

So wrong? No. Wrong? Yes, because there's no telling that because they have incredible power, Kasen must too, especially given the powers they used were used to create the barrier, something Kasen seems to have had no influence on. I think she had some important role, but sage only means wisdom/leadership, so whatever she had to do could have just as well just been that.

Yes, Shuten is the leader. But Ibaraki is Shuten's equal. In mythology Ibaraki is either Shuten's lover or son. And they're just as powerful as him. Anyway, I still stand by the uncontroversial opinion that Kasen might be as strong as the other two sages.

"Because Suika is powerful" yeah. Anyway, I apologize if I seemed to be biting at you, but when I'm met with aggression (as I was at the start, particularly moronic aggression, I choose to squash it). We have this same problem in another General on /vg/. There's a browser extension where you can put in a special invisible character in your post. Then, with the extension, you can make it so you ONLY see posts with that invisible character. By doing this, the Discord fags can let their chat buddies know which special character they are using so they can chat in a thread without see ANY other posts, meaning that some posters in this thread won't see my post, your post, or any other post without this special character.

These people don't care. They just don't care. They don't see any posts outside of their own. You can whine all you want, and they simply won't even know. You can't report them as despite how cancerous they are, they remain on-topic. In the end, they spend 10+ hours in a thread dominating it to death while everyone else can't discuss anything, and if you try to make a second thread, it most likely gets deleted because mods want discussion kept to a single thread.

This. Between /jp/ - Japan/General and /jp/ - Otaku Culture, a guy named KOG (don't ask) convinced moot to give us a Touhou board. It lasted for a few hours and was glorious.

Then, moot realized how great it was an took it away, so now this board is half Touhou and half Japanese culture while the rest of the Touhouposting splinters out everywhere else. Trying to create a Touhou board now would just piss everyone off as the whole site is basically one giant Touhou/Anime board at this point.

Kasen mentioned back then that she had to drink out of her sake box to keep her arm from rotting away. I'm not entirely sure if she's referring to the black smoke or the arm herself, but seeing how smoke doesn't rot, it's most likely the arm.

What could this imply is either the medicine had an unintended side effect and regenerated an entire Kasen from that arm, or if the arm has become that way by its own, Kasen herself is keeping the arm alive as if she's planning to do something with it.

No, it isn't. We know that the oni rule by strength because they were the leaders of the mountain, who rule by strength. And we know that Suika is the strongest of them, and that she's friends with/on par with Yukari (they can and do fight casually, and Suika states they used to fight before spell card rules). Oni don't lie, and neither does narration. Play IaMP.

My not thinking that Kasen is as strong as them is headcanon, sure, just as well as someone saying she must be as strong. My saying she must be weaker than Suika is not headcanon. This is something we know. You'd know if you played the games/read anything.
