On the topic of whether or not watching anime with english subtitles actually help improving japanese

Here's some anecdotal "evidence"
But it might just be coincidence.
I'm german and when i was in 8th or 9th grade we had a partner school in the Netherlands. Every person in our class had a partner in one of the schools classes. Anyways, we went on a class trip to the Netherlands and the students from the Netherlands visited us too at a later date.
So, as some of you may or may not know germany is a dub-country. Everything that airs on TV or in cinema here is dubbed in german. Meanwhile in the Netherlands everything on the TV aired in original language with Dutch subtitles. Dutch and German are very similar languages but all the dutch students english skills far exceeded any of our own. When i asked their opinion as to what might be the reason they all said that it's probably due to the fact that they are exposed to english every single day when they watch shit on TV or go to the cinema.

However, it might just be that their school simply focused more on english language and they simply received better education.

this is a thing and same goes for Scandinavian countries. However you have to consider that we are basically talking about Germanic dialects here (except for Finnish), so learning them is pretty easy. Also you have to consider that they started watching english as children, when they were probably not even able to read the subs for quite some years. And I think after some time you simple learn the damn language instead of reading the subs all the time. The day you turn them off, is the day you improve. As long as they stay on progress is extremely slow.

back in the day the japanese borrowed the chinese writing system from the chinese, but at a later point the chinese borrowed words the japanese came up with that didn't exist in chinese at the time like philosophy, injection etc.

read it up if you don't believe me, idiot.

chinese vocabulary consists of at least 30% words that was borrowed from the japanese. most chinese don't even know about it (chinese education lol) and they'll get mad if you point it out to them, but it's been proven in history. like i said japanese graduated from the stone age sooner than china

The teacher probably won't have time to tutor you over every problem in your Japanese, but sometimes they do point out something helpful to you and they can be a good contact for questions. If you want to do it just to have that opportunity, go for it. Don't expect much from the class though.

it really depends. If you are lucky there are separate fields e.g. "japanese" and "japanese reading" or something like that. In that case it's "easy", just look for the reference for that field in the html and replace it by the other one. If there aren't many such fields your deck is probably shit (like the vncore for example) and you are mostly out of luck, if you don't want to edit every single card by hand. As far as I remember furigana is made by putting it in such brackets "[]". So for example Hello[furi], would show "furi" above "o". Giving you asking this question I think it's hopless to tell you, that you could in theory manipulate the fields automatically in the database, but since the anki guys have no clue about the simplest database concepts, it won't be that easy even for a seasoned programmer.

It's not about "surrounding yourself with japanese to force you to study more", you don't get it. It's about absorbing the language the same way you did when you learned english as a kid. You get it into your blood every way you can. Nobody thinks it's excessive when a kid is immersed in a language. You learn as you go, mostly subconsciously. Do some research on Krashen.

> It's about absorbing the language the same way you did when you learned english as a kid.

And that’s a terrible idea. It takes children 2-3 years of non-stop listening before they can say their first word, and ~6 years until they can read at a Kindergarten level. Unless you want to reach fluency in 12+ years, the bulk of your knowledge must come from studying. And while immersion is important, the lengths some AJATTers go to is downright stupid. You’d get better results watching 10,000 hours of anime instead of fumbling around on your Japanese desktop trying to find the control panel.
