I wonder what quality of those courses will be. It will be mainly Chinks, so they will have an easy start.
I'm going to be clean with you /DJT/, I despise how popular Japan got, all those fucking normies travelling there and moving there. Last year it was the record both for foreigners living there and for foreign tourists.
I wish I was born earlier so I could enjoy it in 1990s (yeah, during recession) as a kind of a house on a tree where it's not easy to get to for everyone else.
At the same time my goal has always been to learn the langauge to consume Jap stuff at home, and maybe eventually go on a trip there but nothing more than that. But I'm still bitter about it.

It literally comes from a picture of two people fucking.
Or at least that's what a lot of sources would have you believe, it's pretty hard to tell what's right here considering this shit is ancient and there seem to be multiple explanations for it. English wiktionary has a different entry than Japanese wiktionary for instance.
It appears the (old Japanese) word いろ itself originally referred to familial relations and later became attributed to romatic & sexual relations and female beauty, and then to just the beauty of things in general and their color, because colorful things are beautiful or something to that extent.

there's not really an alternative to simple drilling once you throw out the entire concept of "mnemonics"
anyway isolated kanji study is questionable, i won't deny it lowers the entry barrier to real study by at least a little, but it's still essentially a way to skip out on learning the language and instead larp at the sidelines learning *about* the language because using the dictionary to look up every single letter as you try to read is naturally a more frustrating task than old school flashcards
however isolated study is an uphill battle & the sooner you start facing off with chinese hieroglyphs in the wild the better

i.e. read more

1. Learning to write kanji is not outputting. You don’t need to craft sentences to learn to write. You also don’t need to learn to write in the first place unless you plan on living in Japan as 99% of the time you’ll be typing on a phone/keyboard.

2. Output teaches you nothing. All t will do is fuck up your accent if you speak to early, even if you don’t realize it. You need the sounds seriously ingrained in your brain first or you will craft awful speaking habits.

3.Input is how you learn. You know how you learned English? By hearing other motherfuckers speak English. Listen and read. As much as you can. Studying grammatical structures and isolated vocab isn’t going to get you fluent in any reasonable amount of time, if at all. The more you expose yourself to the language the faster you will improve your understanding of it.

I'll let you in on a secret. No matter if you start at 1k 2k or 6k words it will still be a huge pain in the ass because reading isn't just about knowing some individual words. If you're doing the core vocab you will never learn a lot of the common phrases in speech because the corpus it's mined from is completely different.
It's not a joke if people tell you to stop putting this off and just start doing it.

I did RTK & core6k and my reading was garbage, it wasn't until I started reading manga regularly it improved. after I had read all of JJBA and Berserk and a couple of other stuff so like 170 volumes of manga, I felt like my reading was pretty good and I passed N1 not long after that.

I think reading manga is a lot better at beginner/int level cause even if you don't know a word it becomes a lot easier to learn from context compared to novels, and it's a lot less frustrating when there's a few pages you can't understand

> You also don’t need to learn to write in the first place unless you plan on living in Japan
I'm still debating this in my head desu. I just feel like it's the most complete way of learning though, and I'm kinda inclined to write the kanji after all.
>All t will do is fuck up your accent if you speak to early
Believe it or not, I can do a very very good Japanese accent. It's the advantage of not being a native English speaker. My native language allows me to pronounce most Japanese syllables very well.
>Input is how you learn. You know how you learned English? By hearing other motherfuckers speak English.
I think you may be right about this. I do watch a lot of anime and listen to a lot of Japanese music so I got pronounciation really clear in my head. I can't understand a lot of phrases because I don't know enough words and grammar. This is why I'm inclined to study classic style with the use of a textbook.
I really want to drop it at some point and only learn kanji, while exposing myself to as much Japanese as possible through reading and watching/listening to stuff in Japanese.
I just can't do that yet. Even reading some Youtube comments in Japanese is near impossible at this point.

If done right: subs2srs with Anki slows the show down to a sentence by sentence level. You have to come to terms of sentences and words you don't comprehend on their own or you just ignored when you were watching. If you understand what was said, delete it. If you don't understand what was said, read the sentence. If you don't understand a word, add the definition.

Now pass the fucking card, and pass it each time it comes up. Don't fail subs2srs cards, just use the review to be reminded what those small parts of a show you did not understand and what they mean. Also rewatching the show will be a different experience since you have near 100% comprehension since now you notice all the things you ignored before and pretty much know what they mean.

This is actually a complete fucking waste of time because you will never need this skill of english to japanese conversion in practice. You're training nothing. It definitely won't help reading comprehension, the fact you even think that is possible tells me you don't read (i.e. you are pre-beginner and should get off your sensei chair).

The ideal way to get better at writing words from memory is:
1) learn Japanese
2) handwrite a lot of Japanese, using a dictionary to look up what you forget how to write

It's a lot like learning to read, except in this case you've got to finish step 1 first and then we can talk.

dont obsess over every line some shit is going to go over your head its all good as long as you usually have an idea of whats going on
if youre really not ready for ln you can eat some easy manga first just dont let yourself be afraid of a bit of challenge because you cant grow your comfort zone from within it

LNs that i have read surprisingly require a greater vocabulary than regular shousetu do and they will have weird otaku things that you need to learn too as well as possibly being written by a shitty writer (LNs arent really the cream of the crop of literature).
that said i think the only way to get good at them is to read them so look around for "easiest LN" or whatever and try and start from there.
i don't believe you get a lot out of reading if you have to look up every single word in every sentence on every page so try and find something as close to your level as you can and you'll lvl ur nihongo skill up from there.
the best thing you can do is find a story that you are interested in so that you want to look up the words to know whats going on. that kind of curiosity will make the learning process much more fun and fast.

What happened, once I actually tried Heisig? Did I start down the slippery slope of never becoming literate in Japanese?

NO.

Did I become convinced that I would never need to study kanji again, and would only ever need to know vague meanings + stroke order?

NO.

Did I bring shame and dishonor upon the Japanese Ministry of Education, for accomplishing in a few days (at least halfway) what it takes an entire year for their students to learn?

NO.

What happened was, I walked away with 30 brand new kanji in 90 minutes. NINETY minutes. I discovered that not only was this guy's estimate of being able to reach fifty new kanji a day possible ... I realize that if you were truly throwing your back into it full time, fifty-a-day might be something of a conservative estimate.

That was exactly two weeks ago today. I've learned the writing and meaning of almost 700 new kanji since then. Now, here is where I think the naysayers against Heisig REALLY fall short in actually trying to say there's something wrong with learning this way.

1) It's not as though I would have learned 700 kanji "completely" in that time using some other method. This isn't time that I've 'wasted" when I could've been studying the same "kanji" properly. This is 700 kanji I wouldn't have obtained using any other method that I can think of. This is me being 700 kanji wealthier, which I would not have been otherwise.

2) Just because I'm only familiar with a vague, unnuanced meaning for each kanji, it does not mean I intend to END things there. Readings are going to come later, and because I've already got the meaning and writing down ... they're also going to come a lot easier and faster.

3) No, I'm not frustrated that I can't actually fully "read" the kanji yet. How would knowing 20 kanji "completely" help me read any higher a percentage of a Japanese newspaper than knowing 700 kanji "partially"? Explain that to me. That delayed-reward conundrum is something that is common across ALL kanji-learning methods. If you're dealing with non-furigana Japanese text ... you either know most-or-all of the kanji inside, or you just can't read it.

To me, that means the solution is to try to learn faster ... not slower. Being "completely" literate in 100 kanji isn't going to help you with a Japanese novel. Being "somewhat" literate in 2,000 kanji on the other hand, will get you a lot closer. You're also NOT excluded from becoming "completely" literate in those kanji as your studies progress.

I know that these kinds of threads have been posted here before, and I know this same discussion has been repeated ad nauseum, but ... even in the last few weeks, as I muse over the anti-Heisig rumblings that are STILL all over the place ... I can't help but grow frustrated. Why?

Because the ONLY people, the ONLY ones, that seem to be so deadset against learning the jouyou in this way seem to be people that have never tried it, and just don't like the IDEA of Heisig. For those that have actually given Heisig a go, and have actually APPLIED his exact technique as laid out in the foreword ... I've never heard anything but a glowing review.

There is NO strong argument against learning to write and recognize 700 kanji over the course of 2 weeks. NONE. I doubt I could've done that much in a YEAR, the way I was going before.

Were it not for that brave member at the other site that was willing to stick out his head (leaving it open to be snapped off) to spread the word to those that would listen ... I might have 15-20 new kanji now, as opposed to 700. Yes, I may remember a handful of readings for that 20 kanji, and yes ... I may even recognize a couple of compounds. My "knowledge" of how to write them, however, would have been shaky as all Hell ... and I would've been drilling them day after day, just trying not to forget them.

Before, I was a skeptical side-liner on Heisig. Now, if I see criticism against it, I'm going to straight-out ask them how they can argue against 700 in two weeks. I really can't think of any way that a person can claim that knowing 20 kanj with readings is better than knowing 700 without them. I can't think of a way that knowing all of the joyou over the course of a couple of months is somehow inferior to taking a couple of years to learning the same, just because you insist on using "real" methods. I can't think of a reason, and I'm betting they can't, either.

That " discipline to make sure you understand everything that's being said" is called looking up shit in a dictionary. You can do that and do very well in getting good at Japanese whether you do an anime just once or repeat anime now and again.

However, you can also add that definition you found, add it to the anki card along with the audio and sentence of the line you got it from, and have it come up 6 or so times over 6 months to get it into your memory quite well. What you save is the time it would take you to relook up the definition since you copied on a card.

One reason is some people use these to create custom vocabulary cards. They mark it wrong if they don't know what the word or phrase means. I used to do this, but it feels like overkill since you can spend a lot of time early on learning words that are not common and only useful in that one show. Another reason, and the one I use now, is that this helps build full comprehension and keep it if you add the audio rip to a loop of other Japanese drama rips. If I end up memorizing the stuff, great. If not, oh well, I'll delete the deck in 3 months anyway since I'll be adding much more now.

Anyone have any tips for how I can decrease my failure rate early in the card? Feels silly to just know the day before I'm going to fail it in 24 hours. Never seems to stick around that long in my brain with 1, 10 interval..

I feel like there's not enough discussion about how bad some folks memories are lol, and how to overcome it and still feel successful. I have some seriously shit days. The worst part is, it makes it so I essentially can't add - if you get like almost all your cards wrong one day, then the next day you have 15-20 new cards to do on top of that, your numbers go up fast.

Maybe @mattvsjapan will throw us a bone and think of some tweaks for if you suck early on. I feel like I can't add 20 a day reasonably because I simply fail too often to do so at the current recommended redpill anki settings
Worked for N5 mostly, N4 seems too complex per card I think.

So how are you testing yourself? The Tango decks are set up as two cards per word. The audio card is meant to test the vocabulary meaning, so so don't sweat not knowing the entire sentence since it's there to give context to the word. The text card is there to test the meaning of the sentence since if you've done RTK, the word's meaning is likely easy to know when you see it, though you do need to know how to pronounce it.

the only test of japanese is opening up a random episode of one piece and understanding every single mora uttered

it's a rebuttal to people claiming they are so pro at nihongo. why dont they just read or listen to something instead of posting about how much they know? who cares what they say we can say whatever we want to and we will if it means watching them squirm out of having their ability assessed

im certified jlpt n1 assessed so im legally, and morally, obliged to tell people to go read and listen
