I'm telling you this for your own good, and the good of others like you.

>you're living in Japan and working as an ALT aren't you? Living in the country helps a fuckton, as you're constantly immersed, and there's a NEED for it
Foremost, yes, I am an ALT in Japan.

Yes and no. Honestly, the internet is a much better immersion tool than actually being in the country. If your Japanese is less than conversational, you get practically no benefits because people won't want to talk more than a minute with you. That's assuming that don't immediately go all-English for practice though. You get much more practice with the internet, to be honest. The only exception is the special days I'm invited over for dinner and it is actually all Japanese. That's the only time being in Japan actually outweighs the benefits of surfing the web.

>>needing to develop lesson plans for 25 different classes
>This isn't hard, it's 25 classes a week, and you can recycle material among them, plus, after doing this for nearly a decade, I can come up with lessons on the fly. Super easy. Shouldn't take more than 2hrs to plan all lessons for the week
This is ignorance and I forgive you for it. 4 of those classes are 7th grade, 4 are 8th grade, 3 are 9th grade, 1 is special ed (7-8th grade), 4 are 3 year olds, 4 are 4 year olds, and 4 are 5 year olds. 1 is private tutoring. Even assuming all classes are on the same day in the curriculum (never happens), I'm passionate and handcraft the lessons for each class depending on what the students in that class like. Less so for the 3-5 year olds since they tend to be the more the same. Also, no, I don't have any time between classes.

>>(travel between schools),
>How is this a negative? In all likelihood you're using public transportation, giving you plenty of hours every day to study during transit
I drive.

>>and still have enough time to do at least 10k words of reading a day.
>See above, you're making it seem like your lifestyle doesn't accommodate your studies, but you and I both know that it does, AND that you're also given plenty of time to go out and socialize too. You finish work at 5pm, and have tons of free time during/between classes too.
I wake up at 7am and work until 5pm where I go home and craft lesson plans.

AND I STILL HAVE TIME TO READ AND LISTEN EVERY DAY.
For your sake, stop making excuses and just do it. There are 24 hours in a day, you have time.

you have to suffer through the beginning of wiring your brain to acquire japanese words. you dont have a strong grasp of all the sound combinations in japanese, you probably dont know how to distinguish similar kanji from one another, and you dont have any other japanese vocabulary to relate it too nor any strong context that youre learning the words from. you just have to suffer through the beginning but if you stay with it it will become so easy you will think japanese is the easiest language in the world

The hardest part is starting out. Nothing you do is going to change that. Until you get good enough to consume your first personally important piece of Japanese media, everything is going to suck and you're going to feel like you can't learn anything. Just hang in there and keep marching on until you start making it.

Don't spend years searching for easier methods like Nukemarine did, and don't run around following advice from so many different people that your method keeps changing. As long as you're learning words and grammar from SOMETHING and you start reading and listening early on you don't need to change your ways until you're no longer a beginner anymore, or you're doing something stupid like spending lots of time doing sentence cards instead of reading.

>> No.20684754

>>20684736
Yes. You should start mining as soon as shared decks become uncomfortable. The front of your mining cards should contain how the word is spelled and the back should contain its readings and meanings. You can delete ones you don't want to memorize within Anki later after mining it.

If you store a sentence in the card (this is not actually a bad idea if your mining setup makes it easy) it should be on the back so that it cannot act as a trigger for remembering the word; the spelling should be the only thing that can be a trigger for remembering the word inside Anki.

Also, you should put an emphasis on mining extremely common words like 追う, not words like 閲覧. There are several thousand common words, you don't want to force feed yourself the ones you're going to see less than once a week. You're not going to see them often enough as a beginner. You want to feed yourself the ones you're actually going to keep seeing and needing. Otherwise Anki will be a chore and feel like a waste of time.

So ofcourse you have time, you MAKE time if you have to, because you must learn the language as soon as possible.

Being an English teacher in Japan is a job (while a pathetic and laughable one, it's still a job) which means you are there to do what you're told and get the job done. You're not there to dick around and experience the culture and practice your Japanese. You are there to teach kids how to speak English. Not if you read and use tae kim.
If you keep fucking translating everything before you interpret it and completely base you interpretation off your shitty translation, then of course you're gonna fuck up. It's also the reason why you should avoid learning with fucking sentence decks, because they force a wonky translation of an entire sentence on you instead of the meaning behind the vocabulary that is used. If you use sentence decks, you're not going to ever understand japanese, you'll only be able to hope that a somewhat similar sentence was in that deck and that said somewhat similar sentence was properly translated (which it will not be, since that's the entire point of learning jap, being that you just can't fucking translate it because it's just that different). Japanese relies on context because the nature of the grammar leads to a lot of clauses being dropped and only the minimum necessary amount of content being said. Homophones don't play a part in this.

Advanced Japanese is used a lot and despite the large number of homophones this is not a problem for Japanese people because it is very natural for someone familiar to Japanese to instinctively know which word is being said based on the context of the sentence. For example, if I said "Try to bare with me here", an English native would not go "Uuuuh did they mean BEAR as in the animal there?". Instinctively, by the nature of the sentence, they would know I meant "bare" and it wouldn't even give them pause. It's the same for Japanese. So yes, advanced vocabulary exists, is used, and there is absolutely no thought whatsoever put into "keeping things basic" due to homophones.

Well, Chinese fonts would still display traditional characters as traditional characters. The simplified characters don't replace traditional characters in fonts, they coexist. The problem with Japanese arises in how kanji and traditional characters do replace each other.
