I haven't finished yet, so I don't know how they'll handle the ending yet, and our experiences will be different than those who don't know the major twists. With that said, I think it's done very well. The acting is good for a Japanese drama, especially when you consider how many child actors are in it. The casting is very fitting. For example, his mom really fits the character, and Kaho is cute/pretty but does a good job of portraying an abused kid. The pizza girl from the present timeline has the most cartoonish personality and acting, but it still works. The cinematography is also very good and doesn't look cheap like many Japanese dramas; it's probably 24fps to look cinematic and doesn't have that bad Japanese soft lighting. I'd say it's worth watching, and I want to see if they change the ending in any way, which was okay in some ways but also lacking in others.

I just finished it. I really liked it and think I enjoyed the ending more in the live action. Satoru's mom and Kayo were really good. It has pretty solid acting all the way through, especially from most if the kids. A lot of the shots were really beautiful too (Kayo's red peacoat contrasting the white snow at night). The color and tone really fit the story. I'd say give the first couple of episodes a try and see if it keeps your interest despite having seen the anime.

Hi friend, thanks for summoning me. I'll say it again for anybody new in this thread but theater acting that's prevalent in Japanese film and tv is tiring and ruins a lot of good work. The rest of the world has already moved on to method acting, which benefits more from a recorded medium like film. Even serious Japanese filmmakers favor it for their films. Theater acting should stay in the theater where it benefits the most, unless the story's supposed to be over the top then it's just jarring. The way it is currently, instills a weird zeitgeist in Japanese actors of what they believe to be good acting when it doesn't fit, which leads to directors having to stop production and waste everyone's time just to make them unlearn what they knew about acting. Of course, what we say in this thread isn't going to change their minds nor have any influence whatsoever. If you're problem is people not understanding the context then maybe we should include some bit about this in the pastebin, though I've never seen anybody actually read the damn thing and just belligerently post here asking for recs, obvious questions etc.

I don't think we need the distinction to film, it's better in TV series too.

Please don't be rude, I was asking for any kind of shows and I'm actually very happy he reminded me of Maruko because I loved that anime during my childhood and it would be very nostalgic to watch it again. I'm also very open about idols, I might like them. I wanna try everything I can find.

I also thank you for your recommendations. I've heard a lot about ItteQ, it's like one of the most watched shows in Japan or something. But do they air it irregularly? Also do I have to watch older episodes to understand the concept or maybe the references?

Thank you guys that was very informative and helpful. Please feel free to recommend more if you can because I'm planning to watch 2-3 shows per day. Be it late-night variety show or a fun long-running anime or idol shows or even sports shows, anything is fine.

I got into idols by watching AKBingo. There is some dumb variety fun and once you get to know them it gets more fun.
I like sumo but I like grappling in general. There are some more complicated rules, but the basics are:
-there are 6 divisions, the highest is Makuuchi
-you can go up and down in ranks depending on your results, the highest rank is Yokozuna from which you can't fall, if you fail, you retire
-There are 6 tournaments in a year. 15 days each, You fight once a day (lower divisions fith only 8 times), if you win 8 fights, you good, the one with the best score at the end wins the tournament
-You win by pushing your opponent out or making him touch the ring with anything else than the sole of his feet
-The bout starts with an initial charge (tachi-ai), the wrestlers decide when to do it, if they are uneven (they haven't both placed both hands on the ring) the referee can restart it
-The ringside judges can dispute the decision of the referee and overturn it or call for a rematch.

>The rest of the world has already moved on to method acting,
>theater acting should stay in the theater

I'm curious what you think about Shakespearean tradition. Many of the best film actors the world over are schooled first in Shakespearean theater technique and you can really see it applied in their acting. Whereas, many Hollywood "stars" who are schooled in film-based method acting are nowhere near as skilled. Most British actors are schooled in a foundation of Shakespearean theater and they tend to be more skilled than most people American film actor's classes can put out.
That being said, I do think the (specifically Japanese) theater tradition doesn't work particularly well in film.

I had a lot of fun with Kekkon Dekinai Otoko, Dragon Zakura, GTO, Beach Boys and anything that had Renbutsu Misako in it. My first drama was Last Friends back in the day, but it's a bit too bleak for my tastes I guess. I disliked Kakegurui, it just felt contrived overall; same with Hana Yori Dango - I can take a fair amount of over-the-top acting, but those were a bit too much. I'd really like to watch something set in rural Japan.

Where should I go next?

I'm not sure what you've watched or how many you've watched but I'll suggest some of my favorites off the top of my head

Hanzawa Naoki
My Boss My Hero
Doctor X
Stand Up
Densha Otoko
Odoru Daisousasen
Kaseifu no Mita
Shinzanmono
Yamato Nadeshiko
Nigehaji
Quartet
The Supporting Actors
Ikebukuro West Gate Park
Nobuta wo Produce
Hitotsu Yane no Shita

With these you're good to go for now. You'll be busy with those for quite some time, I can suggest more later, just ask.

Great! I haven't been too big on watching TV-shows, J-drama or not, so most of those are new to me.

I did watch Densha Otoko maybe ten years back though, and I can remember to this day feeling embarrased for the main character. I might have started Shinzanmono too, but probably got distracted somehow and never progressed more than a couple of episodes in. Abe is one of the most charismatic actors there are, so I definitely will try again and see if I get further in this time.

I really appreciate the effort, especially considering entry level recommendations do get asked a lot. Imma work my way down that list and hopefully find something fun and refine my tastes. Thanks a lot!

You're welcome.
I'm not sure what kind of dramas you're wanting to watch next but if you want a thriller/suspense drama watch Hanzawa Naoki, and if you want comedy watch My Boss My Hero. These two are in the very top of my favorite list, you can't go wrong with them, and I'm sure many people here would tell you that too.

Just finished episode 5 of Million Yen Women. That was great. I really liked the discussion about novels, with Shin and Yuzu's ideologies clashing about what the "right" way to write them is.
The production values are also nice, being a Netflix production and all. And it's refreshing to have a jdrama with "real" acting and none of that exaggerated crap. Though I have to say, the guy acting the protagonist, Yojiro Noda, is not all that good of an actor. I know part of it is the character, but his reactions and the like feel very stilted.

OK so it h Cannot recommend it enough. Japanese used is a perfect 5/10- nothing but everyday Japanese.
as been a while since I posted here, and I came back to recommend 早子先生、結婚するって本当ですか?. Such a great drama- doesn't expect the viewer to be a retard (flashbacking all the time is the worst), GREAT acting, great production, musics and... really everything. Has quiet a few really funny moments, and I mean really funny. One of best dramas I've seen so far and it took me by surprise- I didn't really dig the main actress before. If anyone can recommend something similar, please do!

Slice of life (it gives me 三丁目の夕日 vibes), single middle aged female teacher as a main character- but it is not just another romance story, it's much more than that. Other characters have their own stories and personalities, are not just a background to the main plot.

BTW I passed December JLPT N2, congratulations to others who made it, and ganbatte to those who didn't.

Not really? Every other hidden camera show doesn't even have the pretense of being real, because the nips got pissed off back in the 90s when they had constant newspaper stories about people who had been hired to act as random members of the public for the latest hot prank show.

Every other show out there is purely "pranking" celebrities who understand they're being filmed and understand that they'll only get on TV if they overact like everyone else and start freaking out when a balloon starts slowly inflating in their dressing room. The only half-decent one these days is Suiyoubi no Downtown, because it adds layers to the pranks and subverts the expectations of the trained monkey, and is more interested in getting puzzled looks instead of inane screeching.

Manga adaptations are always a commercial for the source material. You have people that sometimes try harder than usual to hide this but that's the end result. For a Japanese person to earnestly tackle an adaptation from a cinematic perspective would be extremely out of the norm, culture-wise. There's also other factors, like anime directors giving more of a shit about manga adaptations since it's so prevalent, and the sheer logistics of making a movie in Japan without a major studio backing. >>20812426 Also the bubble burst so modern Japanese cinema isn't what it used to be.

Petal Dance isn't really isn't slice of life and deals with a heavier topic of suicide, but it's a slow paced film with minimalistic dialogue as a few women kind of evaluate life through low key interactions and events. But I think it's one of the best looking Japanese films in recent years, and the overall aesthetic is great throughout, from the imagery, blue-ish filter/tone, and things like their clothing (very representative of Japanese female /fa/).

the oldboy hallway scene comes to my mind, it takes place in a hallway yet it's really all the actors hugging a wall on one side of a room to make it look cramped
the choreography/direction is nice because it gives the illusion that they're all cramped in a hallway
the props break like they should when they hit the wall or an actor and it's gritty and raw
and then compare it to like, grasshopper with asano tadanobu or the rurouni kenshin live action movies where the action scenes are like, a 5'6 kid just jumping everywhere
i didn't buy it either in crows zero with oguri shun or takayuki yamada

It's hard to give a real answer because the film itself doesn't even offer an definite answer.
I would recommend watching Noriko no Shokutaku which acts as a kind of prequel to Jisatsu Circle and despite being similarly weird isn't quite so opaque.
It basically includes more fully realised themes from Jisatsu Circle (two of which you rightly identify) and offers insight into the behind-the-scenes of the group suicide of the 54 girls among other things. It also includes a great scene in which the significance of the idea of the 'circle' from Jisatsu Circle is explained, which I see as summarising the director's intent for the 2 films.
Basically Noriko no Shokutaku is a cool film and you should watch it.
