In a world where a detective/scientist uses the proper methodology, there isn't any positive room left for a witch/ghost/god to exist in, it becomes possible to explain everything practically, in a 'rational' manner, and the question Ryukishi wants to answer is whether there is still any justification for a person to believe in a 'god of the gaps', a witch responsible for 'that which can not be proven' in the modern world we now live in.

Imo R07 would say that one could claim in gold that Jesus rose from the dead, but not in red, (like with Sakutaro) and most Christians wouldn't accept that kind of 'belief', because they're thoroughly modern people who are unable to think of anything that can't be said in red as true.

One interesting thing that your post just made me think about is that if Battler is a representation of enlightenment thought then his acceptance of magic is in ways a statement that enlightenment thought may question the mythical, but ultimately has no intent on destroying it. Instead Battler decides to defend the existence of witches since the cruelty of a world only based on scientific reasoning would be destructive to the existence of human emotion and thus human existence.
It reminds me a bit of Carl Jung's "Memories, Dreams, and Reflections" in the way he describes God. It makes sense too since both try to protect the "human spirit". In contrast many characters are portrayed at their worst when they are thinking rationally about things. A good example would be Rudolf and Kyrie in Episode 6 when they rationally conclude that they can get away with killing everyone due to the timed bomb in the island.
Another interesting analysis is how each of the female characters do such a good job at portraying the archetypal female, both the good and bad. Eva's commitment to her family both protecting them from whatever harm she can, but also her using that as a justification for her cunning deceits and betrayals was marvelous.

I was pretty far but I liked my theory and thought I had the answer to most things until I realize that Kanon and Shannon were the same person at the end of EP6
My theory until then was that Shannon, Kanon and Battler were all the childrens of Kuwadorian Beatrice and Kinzo, and that Battler was the baby Kinzo gave to Natsuhi to be raised as the head (and like some kind of resurrection of Kinzo) but since she obviously didn't want him he was given to Asumu and Rudolf. Battler's sin was that he left too soon and didn't come back until Kinzo died and thus couldn't be crowned as the head in time or something. Also he was supposed to marry Shannon, the daughter and "resurrection" of Beatrice to recreate the true "Ushiromiya-Beatrice" family.
The culprits to all murders were all the servants and Nanjo and they were instructed by Kinzo before he died to murder random people except Battler so he could solve the epitaph and become the new head, but halfway through most games Shannon and Kanon rebelled cause they were sick of everything and just wanted to marry their true loved ones and shit went wild.
I wasn't 100% sure but I thought maybe Beatrice wasn't a single person but the personification of the Ushiromiya-Beatrice family, that's why she tortured Shannon and Kanon in episode 2
Also I wasn't 100% sure either but in my head it was possible that Kumasawa was the original Beatrice, the mother of Kuwadorian Beatrice
It all sounds pretty ridiculous now but I was so sure and proud of myself at the time!
