Idoling has personality but they're ugly. Therefore nobody other than the hardcore fans would find them cute.
AKB is a mix of ugly, cute, boring, and charisma. If you take them as a whole, it'll average out to below average. But like any other fandom, you can pick your favorites and ignore the rest. Since they have so many members, there are more uglies that you'd have to ignore but there's also more variety for the rest.
