I was watching CNN a couple weeks ago, and they never once called China "China", they said "Communist China" each and every time. And it is also impossible for them to go the entire story without using the phrase "human rights".

My anecdotal evidence are average people from the street, blogs, internet message boards and friends/fellow workers.

There is more of a positive slant towards the china as a whole, with a more negative slant towards the Japanese.

I like hanging out with Chinese people because there is something inherently insane about their culture. It feels free in ways that my European home-country doesn't, while at the same time lacking freedoms my home-country has. I'd say it's about equal and I'd love to be able to live a life in which I can jump back and forth between the two.

My opinions on Japan? Less insane than China, but still cool. Cooler, in fact, because of all the entertaining shit coming from there and because of the language.
